“The Heroes of St Valery”
On this day in 1940 the 1st Lothians and Border Horse (now SNIY), fought at Saint Valery-en-Caux covering the withdrawal of the 51st Highland Division to the coast. The exhausted 51st made it to the port but the evacuation party was nowhere in sight. Unfortunately, General Fortune had no other option but to surrender the Division to the German invaders. Thousands were captured or killed. 3 officers and 17 soldiers of the Lothians avoided capture and made it back to the UK.
Following the end of the war and the demobilisation of the unit in 1946, the Royal Scots Greys adopted the Lothians’ Pipe Band as their first official Pipes & Drums and, 75 years on, now exist today as The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Pipes & Drums.
75 years after The Lothian and Borders Pipes and Drums formed the Royal Scots Greys Pipes and Drums The Scottish and North Irish Horse have formed a new Pipes and Drums and have started a close partnership with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. The circle in complete.
