A quick update on things happening at the Archery club , next weekend we are hosting a test event at the Pickaquoy Centre , this will see a return of the 'North Atlantic Competition ' on the outfield where the 2025 OIGA Archery competition will be held . This will see approximately 40 archers attending from the Western Isles , Shetland , Faroes & Orkney . The competition will consist of a Full FITA WA 1440 , running alongside a Short metric 50 & 30m competition for novices/beginners on the Saturday with some form of individual & team head to heads on the Sunday , hopefully followed by coaching for those who are interested . We have 20 new Tenzone targets ( half of the number required for 2025 ) sitting in Aberdeen awaiting shipping home to Orkney for next weekend .
In the following Months we hope to run some more ' have a go sessions ' for anyone interested at trying their hand at Archery .
Three of our members will be completing their level 1 coaching course in November which will increase our coaches to four .
There will be areas set out next weekend for spectators , so if you have some spare time pop along & see what goes into an outdoor Archery event .
Huge thank you to Helen & Aaron for dealing with the IT & funding applications for our test event , I know this has caused a few headaches & sleepless nights !
I'm sure happier days are ahead .
All the best
Ian Brough .

So as the dust settles on the Island Games 2023 in Guernsey I think I'll share a few Photos of the Compound Archers trip . Stewart got the only medal for the Archers, a silver in the mens FITA 1440 . We were close in other events & the whole team did Orkney Archery proud . There is a few videos in the mix as well . Archery will re-commence after the County Show. All to work for when the games comes here in 2025 . Enjoy ! 😉

Just to let everyone know there will be no Archery on June 21st due to hall being decorated for a wedding .The last indoor night at the hall will then be on the 28th June . There will be no indoor club nights until the Wednesday after County Show . For fully paid members with their own equipment there is the availability of the outdoor range at Pickaquoy . If you want to use this speak to other members on Wednesday nights .

So we've had 5 have a go sessions since the beginning of March ( over 50 folk ) , it certainly has been popular & I hope enjoyable too . No plans yet to host more as now we will be concentrating on the Archers that are partaking in the Guernsay Island games getting as much practice time as they can . We will be continuing with our indoor club shoots on Wednesday nights (7.30-9.30) right up to the Island games. For the new members who wish to attend these nights the club allows 6 Wednesday nights before membership to Archery UK will have to be paid . ( This covers insurance specifically ) As membership runs from September onwards there is just now a pro-rata rate in place which I think is around about £30. If you speak to Robert or Helen they will sort this out for you . Personally I've enjoy these 'have a go sessions' and hope the popularity & interest lasts . Cheers Ian

To everyone who is attending the 'have a go session' this Tuesday 18th April , here is just a reminder of what to expect . The session starts at 7.30 in the St Andrews Community Centre , price is £10 per adult &£5 per junior (11 &over ). Please wear comfortable clothing without strings on hoodies etc , be mindful of jewellery that may interfere with your ability to shoot correctly . Wear flat soled shoes / trainers as well . The type of Archery you will be trying is target archery with beginners recurve bows . There will be other types of bows on display as well . Remember archery is a fun for all sport , so we're looking forward to hosting this session for you . The last 3 have been very successful & quite a few folk have returned on our normal Wednesday night shoots . See you Tuesday !

23/03/2023

That is another have a go session fully booked for 18th April . Sorry if you missed out but we may have tae organise more ! Please be patient !

21/03/2023

So tonight we had our 2nd have a go session & again I think it was a great success . Both groups showed some promising talent & hopefully many will return to shoot on Wednesday nights with the club . Next week is the final group for March & looking forward to it as well , if your half as good as the previous two then the future looks bright ! ( No pressure . lol )

04/03/2023

Just a quick heads up to all those folk who are attending our have a go sessions in the next few weeks . The type of Archery you will be trying is Target Archery using Recurve bows (left & right handed ) & beginners fibre bows.( If needed ) For clothing please wear comfy clothes , try to avoid any tops with loose or fixed items (buttons , big collars , hoody strings , etc ) Long hair should be tied up or fixed back , Flat soled footwear if possible , take care with jewellery on wrist & neck which could catch on the bow string . There will be 3 targets & 3 bows set up to use . We will have other bows on display - Compound bow , Recurve bow , Hungarian Horse bow , Longbow & a Flatbow . Payment for the night will be taken at the beginning & is cash only . There will be at least 3 club members to coach - 1 per target . All necessary equipment will be provided at the beginning & we're looking forward to running a fun night of Archery .

21/03/2022

The Archery club will be holding a virtual AGM due to continuing Covid related issues , this will be held on the 3rd of April at a time yet to be decided ( probably 8pm ) All relevant information will be updated on this post as soon as we know what's what ! We have a lot to organise and need to get on with rebuilding a strong Archery club in Orkney .
