State Historical Museum
The State Historical Museum is located right on Red Square and, along with the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, is one of the largest and most important museums in Russia. The State Historical Museum was founded at the end of the 19th century on the initiative of two Russian nobles and was a small collection of archaeological finds from the early history of Russia. Today, the State Historical Museum contains about 4.5 million exhibits. Thematic areas range from the Paleolithic and early settlers to the Middle Ages, the first Russian state called Kievan Rus, the Mongol invasion, and the end of the Tsarist empire in the early 20th century.
