My daughter is working with this collective of indigenous artists from The Montaña region of Guerrero, Mexico. This region is constantly affected by violence, racism, economic marginalization and cultural exclusion, as well as the loss of Indigenous languages, which have been replaced by Spanish. The collective is working with children and young people, facilitating workshops on creative writing and other arts based on Indigenous thought and mother tongues.

I believe everyone should have the opportunity to create, to grow and think in their own language, culture and history, without having to suffer violence for it. They are now creating a cultural center to make this happen! I fully support this effort, if it is within your means consider making a donation, I will donate as much as I can afford because I really believe in this project... Great and important things can be achieved with the solidarity and the help of many

For the past 30 years, Narcissus Quagliata has helped push glass fusing into new territories and to new heights. During that time, he has dedicated himself to creating a new language for making art with glass, fusing his deep knowledge of watercolor with his mastery of kilnforming techniques. The result is a glass fusing grammar and syntax that allows for painting with glass itself.

Narcissus has recently decided to gather together all his techniques and experience into a Fused Glass Learning System and share it with the community. In this webinar, Narcissus and his guests will explain:

🔎 How this system works
🔎 How it can be used to understand essential fused glass techniques
🔎What will you learn from Narcissus' explanations of his techniques and findings

Please join us on March 3, 2022, at 2:00 pm, Pacific time, to hear Narcissus discuss the language of fused glass, while exploring different aspects of the Fused Glass Learning System with his guests.

What do you do when you win a project but you don't have the resources to correctly execute it? How do you find the right fabrication team or studio?

It doesn't matter if you are doing a single glass panel and don't have a way to get it installed properly or if you are doing a big architectural commission that will define part of the landscape of a city. This kind of situation can make or break an artist's career.

Every project is critical. Narcissus Quagliata knows this because he has done all kinds of work from small windows for individual clients to high-profile projects for corporations, the government, educational institutions, museums, and nonprofits.

Leverage his experience and gain confidence in scaling up your artwork in “Business for Artists”.

“Narcissus Quagliata is not only an exceptional artist, he is an exceptionally talented and generous teacher. During our time with him, he answered our questions until we had no more questions to ask. He gave us practical tips regarding work and money (which is always important) but, perhaps more importantly, he passed along invaluable life wisdom and made us all feel that even though being an artist is difficult––it is not impossible.”

I spent the whole of the past week with Malene Barnett introducing her to the material of glass
as a means to create imagery by way of kilnforming. This happened in LA where she came to Judson studios to do a brief residency.
Malene is an accomplished and recognized designer in the field of fabric design, and is now expanding her repertoire to ceramics and glass.
It was such a pleasure to work with her! She immediately grasped every technique that I exposed her to, but beyond that her energy and enthusiasm is rare, but certainly contagious.
She has big ideas going forward, and many projects in the making.
I wish her lots and lots of luck and hope to work with her again in the future.

Hand sculptures, 1982
Experimenting with the materials, using the kiln to create expressionistic gestures...

From a technical viewpoint the kiln use came into fashion around late seventies (before that it was glass blowing and stained glass only) like many others I wanted to know what could be done in the kiln. I began to see the opportunity to do something three dimensional, I would sandwich copper-wire between sheets of glass. Every hand has two firings: The first one to make a flat shape that integrates the wire, the second one to suspend the piece in the kiln attaching the wires to a structure and letting the heat and gravity move the glass to determine its final shape.

A film about the creation of the world's largest fused stained-glass window of its kind installed in the new Church of Resurrection in Leawood Kansas.

So what is “Stopping time?” ...It is when we successfully let go of our Selves, of all our day-to-day thoughts, preoccupations, when we let go of who we are, and allow a very large silence into the center of our lives. For me, unless I create a large and firm empty space, creation is impossible. Holding that empty space in place, long enough for this Opera to appear, was very hard and I consider that an achievement.

What is frightening about stopping time is that it feels you are moving in the exact opposite direction you need to go to be creative. Instead of seeking inspiration and stimulus, ideas and development of interesting shapes and figures, you seek silence, emptiness and stillness. You are trying to slow the metabolism of your soul. You need to stop thoughts to the point where you wish to say nothing and listen to everything.
Paying attention to your breathing and simply following its rhythm is key. Here I want to be present every moment, and I want to open, I want to see and feel.
Then at last, when the noise of my mind is quieted, I am finally “here.”

Of course one’s effort is never perfect and complete. There is always room for improvement. But as the pain of letting go of everything subsides, I feel the inner landscape of silence manifest itself. I feel I am very far away, yet close to the core
of my essential being. In that silence, I can feel the immense rivers of emptiness that flow through the Universe. The rarity and preciousness of being alive become apparent. I can enjoy the magic of the nature around me without distractions...

HOLY FRIT Trailer 25/01/2021

I’m excited to share with you the trailer of Holy Frit !
A documentary about the creation of the world's largest fused stained-glass window of its kind to be installed in the new Church of Resurrection in Leawood Kansas.

When Tim Carey asked me to participate in this project I was surprised, but it became obvious that the design he had done was only possible if done with the fused glass language that I had developed with twenty years of experimentation. Up to that time I had only fused glass to achieve my work. This project kickstarted my collaboration with Judson Studios: The first major studio in the world to embrace image making with fusing at depth and at a large scale.

With this collaboration my main interest is to transmit the know-how of fusing that I have been exploring and developing for years to Tim Carey, the staff of the Judson Studios and through the Studio to painters and stained glass artists from the US and worldwide. I became excited to direct the ex*****on of the window because I could really see my inventions in fusing were useful to other artists with other styles.

Fusing is finally taking root in a stained glass studio... allowing this technique to expand and grow into many artists and projects… After one thousand years of making stained glass windows essentially the same way, at last there is a whole new beginning into uncharted territory.

I have been lucky to be really involved in this chapter of modern glass history: From Bullseye Glass Co. creation of fusible glass to Judson Studio’s embrace of this new technique… It has been and continues to be an exciting journey!

Thank you Justin Monroe, I admire your commitment and dedication to this story…

The survival of Life depends on struggle, and at all levels of existence, micro and macro, the struggle to exist implies Conflict.

In conflict, competing forces clash continuously at every level, whether they are between majestic celestial bodies at the cosmic level, or in the animal and human realm… Destruction and creation are inexorably entangled, and the joy of existence is inexorably linked with the lament of the vanquished…

Conflict also signifies the abandonment of balanced judgment and compromise in the rush to war. The Eclipse, visible at the contact point between the wrestlers, is the appropriate astronomical symbol because it obscures the sun, the symbol of reason.
Out of the flames emitted by the fury of battle a Phoenix rises, signaling the cyclical rebirth of life…

After I was awarded the Project of doing the artwork for the R10 metro station in Kaohsiung, the staff of the KRTC (Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation), took me to meet the Mayor Frank Hsieh. I had already studied the history of Kaohsiung but I did not suspect then how important this ceremonial encounter between the artist and the Mayor would turn out to be for the project… The Mayor brought the conversation around to the subject of the site and its importance “to the History of the city and the History of Taiwan.”

I knew already of the famous Beautiful Island incident in that very Square where the Metro station was being built, but he suggested that he would love it if that incident was somewhat recognized and symbolically present and remembered in my work: “In that Square, starting with that event, Democracy was born in Taiwan,” said the Mayor, “That incident was the beginning of a chain of events that led to the transformation of our society into what it is today…”

“Out of inevitable Conflict comes Resolution and Peace…” For me these words were inspiring and critical, because they were my guide in designing the fourth quadrant dedicated to Conflict and the Rebirth of Peace emerging out of that conflict… referencing at the same time the Beautiful Island incident as well as bringing the theme of Conflict and Rebirth to a more Universal Cosmic level
