We are honored to have earned the support of Equality California- a leading LGBTQ+ rights organization- in our reelection campaign! In this time of rising discrimination towards LGBTQ+ students, teachers, and faculty in our schools, it is critical to have visible q***r leadership in our education spaces. I am honored to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with EQCA and other LGBTQ+ organizations locally and statewide as we continue the work to protect our students, and ensure our schools are safe and welcoming spaces for all.

This evening (I am in DC), shortly after leaving a session on community solutions to gun violence at the Congressional Black Congress Conference facilitated by Senator Corey Booker and featuring NEA President Becky Pringle, I received word about the the sad and horrific news of the day. Another shooting at an Oakland campus, this time with several adults wounded. My heart aches…for the victims…for the schools on that campus…for the community…for Oakland…for Alameda County…for all who working to reduce violence in our communities.
Although still feeling the heaviness and gravity of yesterday’s shooting at Madison Park Academy, I am comforted by the love, dedication, and professionalism of all of the educators who work there. During my brief visit this morning, the educators I spoke with emphasized the importance of “being here”, and providing a space for students, with the support being received from Alameda County health professionals. As I keep the injured student and their family close to my heart, I am well aware of the work that we as elected members need to do to help create safer environments for our community members.
I’ve been hearing a lot of concerns about this from constituents and want to assure you that I am, with other trustees, working to get to the bottom of how these inequities happened outside of the public eye.

Thank you to everyone who came out today! We built ten tables and ten new garden boxes, weeded, spruced and gloried in the beautiful day on our beautiful campus! Vote . It is time for corporations to start paying their fair share, for our schools and our communities.
⏳ It’s about TIME corporations like Chevron pay their fair share. Stop corporate tax giveaways that hurt our communities by voting to reclaim $12 billion every year for our schools and communities!

Good news! The USDA is extending its free meal program (the same one AUSD uses for its summer meal offerings) through December 31, 2020.
That means that any youth up to age 18 (not just AUSD students) can pick up meals at our distribution sites; no ID needed. It also means that parents/guardians can pick up meals without a child present. Meals are being given out Tuesdays and Fridays, 11 am to 1 pm, at eight sites across Alameda: Ruby Bridges Elementary, Paden Elementary, Academy of Alameda, Love Elementary, and Earhart Elementary, as well as Lincoln Middle, Wood Middle, and Encinal Jr. & Sr. High School.
We still encourage families to fill out the form for Free & Reduced Price Meals, as qualifying for that program confers other benefits, including reduced prices for PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams, as well as free college applications. But please know that any student or family can now get free meals at our sites. The form is available on our Food & Nutrition Services page: http://www.alamedaunified.org/foodservices.
Important update from Oakland Unified School District:
There is major news regarding our grab and go student meal service. After the first three weeks of the school year, in which our nutrition services team had to verify all students receiving food attend our schools, the federal government has made a big change. This week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reversed course and announced that schools can now return to their grab and go policies from the summer.
So, starting tomorrow, Thursday, September 3rd, all children in Oakland 18 years old and younger, can get food. Students in our young adult program can also get food. It will include three meals for each weekday, and two meals for each weekend day.
Our staff will be taking attendance, but families no longer have to prove their students attend District-run schools. They can be students in charter and private schools, or homeschooled. And don’t worry, we don’t share student information with anyone. So, come to one of our 22 sites across the District to pick up food.
For more information, visit our website, at ousd.org/nutrition.
Please don’t forget to wear a mask to protect yourself and those around you.
Nutrition Services / Overview Starting August 10, the Nutrition Services Department will operate 22 pick-up locations throughout the city where “Grab and Go” meals will be available for any student registered and enrolled in TK to 12th grade at one of our District-run schools, or in our Early Childhood Education or You...
Thanks to East Bay Stonewall Democrats for your support, and for standing up for our communities!

According to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters, all ballots have been counted from the March 3 election, and our people-powered campaign received the most votes!
This is an incredible “us” moment that would not have happened without educators, families, unions and the community working together to fight for a common goal: the schools and programs our students deserve. I am incredibly humbled and honored to represent Alameda and Oakland on the Board.
Right now I am sheltered in place and very focused on supporting educators and school communities through the Covid-19 pandemic, but I look forward to celebrating this victory for our students with you in the future. Our community is resilient and strong, and I know that together we will get through these trying times. Stay safe.
I want to send a huge THANK YOU out to all the folks who supported our campaign. Whether you knocked on doors, texted voters, phonebanked, attended community events, or donated - I appreciate you and all the support you gave to this campaign for the schools our students in Alameda County deserve.
I said throughout that we will never beat billionaire money with more money. We can only win through our organized people-power.
While the first round of vote counting looks very positive, there are still MANY votes to count. Elections are important and counting every vote is important. I understand from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters that there should be another upate to the vote counts tomorrow. More soon.
