Why Golden Services?

High school sweethearts Todd and Hope Whiddon didn’t know in 2006 when they started Golden Services, the pine straw business, that nine years later, they would be running Golden Services, the “Business Without Boundaries.” After fifteen years of marriage, they were of one clear mind on the values they wanted their new business to be built upon. They knew that they wanted to take customer service to the next level and embrace a new kind of business culture. They wanted “employees, not just workers,” and they believed that if they put their staff first, the staff would put the customers first. The Whiddon’s have lived up to their motto of “Business Without Boundaries,” by expanding their janitorial service to include everything from maintenance, painting and power washing, to changing light bulbs. Customer service also knows no boundaries at Golden Services. All calls are answered either on the phone or face-to-face, within minutes.

Annie and Paxten were the Whiddon’s Golden Retrievers. Beautiful as Golden’s are, they are primarily known for their temperament. According to Todd, “A well bred Golden Retriever is gentle, kind, loving, loyal, happy, confident and outgoing. These were the values we wanted to embrace as our service philosophy. Neither lazy nor hyper, todays Golden Retriever blends easily into any family setting. They are obedient and will astound you with their willingness to please.” “Golden Services” seemed the perfect name for a business that espoused all these qualities.

Todd learned a strong work ethic early in life from his grandparents, William and Dean Manning. About his childhood, Whiddon says, “I’ve always been a neat freak. While everyone else was out playing, I would be cleaning or cutting the grass.” These lessons were reinforced and expanded upon by his first two employers. Prior to embarking on his own business journey, Whiddon worked for Warren Stafford at “Staffords,” and for Powell Jones, first at “W.J. Powell,” and later at “Secure Records.” According to Whiddon, “I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for them.” The admiration is mutual.

According to Stafford, “Todd is an energetic young man. He didn’t walk, he ran.” Powell Jones describes Whiddon as “a young man with a lot of pride in his work, a lot of ‘hustle’...Todd has very strong standards for serving others. I’m very proud of what he and Hope have accomplished.”

Business ethics and culture were extremely important to the Whiddons when they started Golden Services, and the first step in building a sustainable business culture is having a happy, loyal team. Whiddon says, “We would not be here if it weren’t for our team. With our 284 combined years of service, we can’t lose. We have gained an excellent reputation for professionalism and first-rate service. Annie and Paxten taught us- stay focused on the people who matter- our clients. Our future success is based on their opinion.” The Golden Services team consists mostly of retirees and people in need of a second income, (one employee works mainly to finance her daughter’s orthodontia). From the beginning, the Whiddons were committed to compensating their team at rates that provided enough to live on. “Caring for our staff is our number one priority,” Whiddon says. “After all, they place their livelihood in my hands, and I place mine in theirs.” Former City of Thomasville Police Officer and Thomas County Sheriff’s Deputy Vick Harper is the General Manager of Golden Services. Harper, a childhood friend of Whiddon’s, shares his values and his business philosophy. Harper is also a veteran of the Army and the National Guard, doing a tour of duty in Iraq from 2010-2012.

Whiddon’s belief in caring for his staff as a first priority has proven to be correct and wise. The Golden staff responds by ensuring that their customers are fully satisfied. The crackerjack team at Golden Services never hesitates to go the extra mile in things like emergency clean-ups for regular clients. Louise Barwick of Thomasville Eye Center was among the first of Golden Services clients. “We’ve been with Todd since their inception. Within five minutes of any call, they’ve called back, or they are standing at the door.” The Shaw Center was another early client, and according to Lou Strickland, “It’s the best environmental services partnership we’ve ever had.” It’s a partnership that has grown as Golden Services has taken on more responsibilities that used to be shouldered by the staff at the Shaw Center.

What started as strictly indoor cleaning has grown to include building maintenance, laundry, room restocking, and even some sterilization. According to Strickland, “He takes care of the place just like I would. I’m very proud of him”

Golden Services continues to grow, and their motto says it all: Golden Services is a business without boundaries. What started with one van operating out of a 200 square foot office has grown into a fleet of vehicles and offices/warehouse totaling over 15,000 square feet. The team that began with Todd and Hope now includes over four dozen employees who are responsible for 117 buildings. A local business with a small-time feel, they deliver big-time results. With a record like theirs, the future definitely looks “Golden.” We look forward to seeing Golden Service two new business adventures in the spring of 2016 and fall of 2017.
