By living (and playing) abroad, you're afforded exposure to various philosophies and methodologies forged by different cultural/social/political approaches. Life is filled with contrasts, and being able to compare and contrast across cultures is highly rewarding, as it provides a solid platform for a discussion.

I have lived in Norway, Germany, New Zealand, the US and Scotland, and wanted to apply this to a mini-series on "Foreign Coaches On Norwegian Talent Development" to delve into:

(1) their stories: why Norway, their evolving coaching principles enabled by negotiating between two different cultural approaches etc.

(2) the Norwegian model: its transformation into a supposed hotbed for top-tier talents, the democratic structure that values playfulness and inclusion and its pros and cons, + much more.

Thanks to Kevin Nicol, Thomas Dent and Antoni Ordinas for taking the time to share their knowledge and expertise.

Transitioning from a playing career is never easy, but following forced retirement at age 30 (that had seen him play in four different countries and two European Championships), Mikkel created his own agency and has now been in the business for 17 years. We discussed what attracted him to become an agent, building his brand and credibility to ensure success for the client and his team, the type of person/player he looks for in prospective clients, the range of roles an agent is expected to fulfil, and the difference between player agents and club agents and why only one of them needs regulating.

A year has passed since Ciaran McKenna and I started our podcast, and we reflect on it with great joy and excitement. It has been part of an established learning trajectory that we are passionate to continue.

Our purpose has always been, by seeking out those "crazy"/brave enough to do things a little differently, to learn and be inspired by these impressive individuals, and share these worthwhile stories and lessons with a broader audience.
In doing so, we abide to one of the greatest laws - the law of progressive development.

Our guests have ranged from world-renowned journalists, broadcasters, CEOs, Ballon d´Or winners, and politicians, and it is through this eclectic mix we allow ourselves to be inspired and derive ideas and methods we can apply for overall betterment, as well as for general enjoyment.

Genuine appreciation for those that have listened, as we hope you become one of plenty more!

Joining us this week is MLS legend Jason Kreis. Having had an incredibly successful playing career, Jason then went on to manage several MLS teams where he often operated against the status-quo and instilled his unique ethos predicted on “The team is the star.” During the episode we discuss his slow realisation of professional football being a possibility, his remarkable career at Dallas Burn and what he attributes his individual performance to, as well as the rapid, but tough, transition from player to manager and the different expectations and pressures that this brings. We then delved deeper into his coaching philosophy; creating a selfless culture, the benefits of working and learning from legends of the game (Pirlo, Villa, Lampard, Kaka), but also the challenges of managing them. Jason passes on the wisdom he gained from building a successful franchise at Real Salt Lake, as well as the challenges and lessons learned at newly formed franchises New York City FC and Orlando SC. The discussion comes to an end with Jason emphasising the multiple pathways available to young players pursuing professional soccer and the sometimes bad advice related to “needing to go pro young.”

Episode 1️⃣5️⃣ is now out with CEO of Barnsley Football Club, Dane Murphy⚽️

In this talk with Markus Fjørtoft and Ciaran McKenna, Dane discusses his path from a young American attempting to forge a playing career in north-west Germany to becoming one of the youngest CEOs in the English Football League. Having served as technical director for both Real Salt Lake and DC United, he reflects on the differences and similarities between the MLS and EFL models and the shortcomings of extremist visions (restricted market vs. free market) in light of the recent salary cap introduced in England. Further, he elaborates upon the vision of Barnsley's ownership in attempting to redefine how English clubs are run with emphasis on organic growth, the ramifications of establishing a club philosophy focused on maintaining a club's sustainability, the implementation of a data-based approach to support rather than overtake decision-making, preserving the Barnsley DNA amidst all this, and whether he feels like he's got something to prove.

PART TWO of our chat with Amir Lowery and Liam MacDevitt,as we focus on the road ahead!

We delve deeper into topics of race and politics, and focus on the road ahead. How can we ensure the activism and advocacy for racial justice is upheld? How can environments to confront racial bias be created across party lines, and how does Amir running as an independent play into that? How are athletes' skills transferable to the world of politics and the fight for wider systemic change? In a call for justice that has swept the US and much of Europe, can an increasingly empowered and "non-conformist" generation "fix" the issues at hand in fragmented national states? We also got a few “special” questions to end on to conclude our chat with Amir and Liam!

We Back!

It's been an extended break for the lads of BroPod, but we're back with an episode we highly enjoyed and learned a great deal from!

Amir Lowery and Liam MacDevitt are two former professional footballers now striving to make a positive difference in POLITICS and MEDIA.

We discuss the roles with which Liam and Amir have occupied within football, media, and politics to gather their perspectives on race in society and where we're headed.

Amir Lowery (Dream Aspire) is now a Player Relations Manager for the MLSPA and Executive Director for Open Goal Project, a nonprofit dedicated to helping youth soccer players navigate the financial and logical challenges that persist in American Club Soccer. Earlier this year, Amir announced he will be running for Congress as a representative of the District of Columbia.

Liam MacDevitt is now an English/Irish broadcast journalist, content curator and presenter for the BBC on Match of the Day Kickabout and the PFA. Liam played for Yeovil Town, Swindon Town, and Stoke City to name a few, and he shared the same team and flat with Markus in New Zealand (lucky him!) playing for Southern United and then followed by Tasman United.

Tune in for Part 2 in the beginning of next week!

Ada Hegerberg: THE GROUNDBREAKER

Ada Hegerberg has arguably cemented herself as the best women's footballer in the world and broken more records than I could list at a mere age of 24. In this chat, Ada discusses her commitment to quality, repetition, and visualization that's been ingrained in her from a young age, and how it has all played a part in her "natural" nose for goals, and immense mental fortitude. She also discusses the privilege and seriousness she has towards using her platform to make meaningful change, the unflinching certainty of who she is and what she wants to represent, what drives her when she's seemingly accomplished it all, and what legacy she wants to leave behind.

Markus Fjørtoft talks to presenter, journalist, consultant and social media guru (not bad...) Aaron West (). They discuss starting from scratch and making his mark through Twitter, representing a new generation within a shifting sports media landscape, furthering the cause for minority issues through storytelling, finding his voice, the cultural factors that've contributed to the growth of the American soccer culture, eSports, and being "different"...

Aaron is a Davidson College alumnus, where he spent 4 years playing college soccer. Aaron started a blog about soccer, and progressed to writing for outer outlets working as a digital strategist and freelance writer (including Goal.com). He was an early adopter of Twitter and was eventually recognized and subsequently hired by Fox Sports. He went on to work for Copa90, a video-first soccer media outlet, and he's now host of Bleacher Report’s “Out here”, as well as being a pitch-side reporter for the Champions League games.

Vidar Riseth had one of those chats with his dad when he was 7. He wanted to play professional football and he asked his dad what a perfect career would look like. His dad said, "son, first you play for your local club and then you go on to play for Rosenborg, the best team in Norway. You can then play professionally in (one or two of) the four biggest leagues in the world (England, Spain, Germany, and Italy), and then represent your country in the World Cup. And lastly, you have to play in the Champions League. If you do all that, you'll have played in the same competitions as the best players in the world." And I'll just leave it at that for those that might not know what followed...

Vidar Riseth has played for 8 professional clubs in 5 different countries, represented Norway 52 times and scored 4 goals, beat Brasil in the World Cup, and scored the winner in a Scottish cup final. He is now executive sponsor director of Rema 1000, a multinational grocery chain.

We talked about selling potatoes and Christmas trees to get by at the start of his career, the culture shock that first met him abroad, the different pressures that followed throughout his career, Henrik Larsson's bet on him for the cup final, transitioning into life after football, a certain champagne deal + much more!
