Boy Boy is sharing stories of his childhood in the Singapore of 1980s and 1990s
Railers poll: Which Rusty Rail character would you like to see in a 3D figurine?
Hello, Railers! Sorry for the silence. We are busy prepping for a print edition of Rusty Rail! Watch this space for the update on the comic book and merchandise. Have a great week ahead!
By the way, if you have interesting stories of your childhood, drop us a message and your story might make it to the special print edition
The Korean series Squid Game on Netflix reminds us of one of our favourite games, AEIOU
Which kind of mooncake do you like?
Were you part of any fan club? Boy Boy was a fan of Brooke Shields, who started her fan club in 1983. The stamps from the fan club mail were among his favourites in his stamp collection. What did you collect?
It's the school holidays here in Singapore - time for sleepovers! What was the one game you'd definitely play with your cousins?
The wayang, or Chinese opera, used to be a common sight - just like the pushcarts selling snacks. We hope today's strip brings back sweet memories of your own outings
Boy Boy got a new lantern from Por Por. We couldn't wait for nighttime to play with it. Well, we tried...
Here's a tribute to the king of fruits. How much durian have you eaten this season?
Rusty Rail is 1! A year ago, we started this comic series to bring nostalgic pieces to everyone, both in Singapore and beyond. Thank you to our followers, we wouldn't be here without you.
Happy 56th birthday, Singapore!
We used to have a book for leaf cuttings for Science class. We were tasked with pasting leaves on the pages and label them with the name of the plants.
Did you have brilliant ideas that didn't sit well with your parents? Boy Boy was full of "brilliant" ideas
This really happened, guys... Aminah believes it's what gave Boy Boy his artistic superpowers
Oh... how we hated Napfa test. How did you fare? Aminah is still struggling with sit-and-reach... her middle keeps getting in the way
What was your favourite game to play with friends at the dragon playground?
Do you remember the slides at Big Splash? The iconic water theme park at East Coast was a go-to during school holidays!
Whoa we lost track of time! Who doesn't love the school holidays? While taking a break from monkeying around at the playground, Aminah starting ranting about how she never got to be a driver at the Road Safety Community Park...
The June school holidays are here! We love sleepovers. Do you remember your sleepovers at your friend's or cousin's?
Our parents and grandparents had magical all-seeing eyes and all-hearing ears. Their noses, too, always smelling the trouble we were getting ourselves into
Did you have neighbours selling ice sticks and lollies? They were our favourite kind of neighbours 😆
We loved to play Tikam-Tikam (Malay for random pick) at the mama shop. Didn't matter that the prizes were nothing great. We would be happy enough getting the "top" prizes 😂
Did you ever break something at home and try to cover it up?
Water rationing exercises taught us not to take clean water for granted. If we did not fill our own pails with water before the taps were turned off, we would have to queue at the water trucks and lug the pails up the stairs (lifts stopped only at certain floors back then)
Eraser War was one of Mina's favourite non-strenuous games to play during Ramadan. We all agree that the flag erasers were best for this game. Which country's flag was your winning eraser?
Did you compete to see who could blow the biggest bubble gum balloon?
Por Por had small, bent feet. So did some of our friends' grandmas. Luckily Por Por did not continue the binding practice or she wouldn't have been able to chase Boy Boy with the feather duster!
Aminah didn't really understand how digestion worked. But hey, who were we to stop her?
Boy Boy was greedy, as you Railers can tell by now
What was your favourite biscuit? Sometimes it was hard to decide, looking at the clear front of the tins at the shop. But for Boy Boy and Bin Bin, they had a clear favourite - the sugared gems.
Boy Boy used to give Por Por a wide berth when she was using her mortar and pestle. Chilli and spices would jump out but it never fazed her. Meanwhile, the fumes alone would burn Boy Boy's eyes!
Sticky disputes, they were aplenty
What's your favourite pasar malam food?
Here're tips for aspiring spider hunters
Aaah... the things we did to get more hongbao 😁
Boy Boy loved Chinese New Year because he'd get hongbao from his family
Happy New Year, Railers! May the Year of the Ox bring you and your family good health, prosperity and joy!
The iTunes and Spotify generation will never understand the pains we went through in creating a mix tape, armed with just a casette tape and a recorder, and the hope that we'd get a non-chatty DJ spinning the songs we wanted
We're sure we're not the only ones guilty of this
HAPPY HOLIDAYS ❤️ EVERYONE ❤️

Before cable TV, there were shops with rows and rows of tapes for rent. Boy Boy misses watching Hong Kong serial dramas with Por Por ♥
The rainy season reminds us of all the times the bus windows failed us
