Wedge-tailed Eagle (juvenile)
Aquila audax
Australia's largest bird of prey - the iconic Wedge-tailed Eagle. I'm more accustomed to seeing these magnificent birds soaring high in the sky above, so to have the opportunity to see a pair of these birds successfully raise & fledge not one but two offspring was really something special. It's quite uncommon for Wedge-tailed Eagles to successfully fledge two chicks, usually only the strongest survives. But not for this determined pair!
There's something incredibly humbling about being in the presence of such amazing birds; I was in awe of the parents ability to provide for their offspring even in the most trying of conditions, including a severe storm that snapped the top of their nest tree clean off, right at the fork where the near is built!
Pictured is the younger & smaller of the two fledgling Eagles, taken days before it successfully fledged (a few days after the larger of the pair had already left the nest). This bird was perched on the end of the main branch on which the nest is built & was keenly watching the various other birds that would fly by the tree or call from nearby.
I love the brighter colours of the youngsters, as they age their plumage becomes quite dark.
