‼️2024 Provisional Calendar‼️
Excellent line up of races both Nationally and Internationally this year!
Time to put the milage in🌊
Post Doctor Update - Róisín Cahill
After being ferried to Rottnest Island at 9am competitors saught shade to wait for the organisers heads up on the start time.
The wind arrived and competitors entered the crystal blue waters of Rottnest at 12pm.
The race start was seeded - with the top 20 male and females wearing yellow jerseys and given priority on the start line.
The first 1km out to the turning bouy was side on to the wind and fast - with huge hotspot cash up for grabs.
Turning the bouy to the 20km downwind section, the field began to spread out as we aimed towards the “Centaur Marker” which was not visible in the distance. This marker was the turning point near the Perth coastline which would mark the last 6km to Sorrento Beach. It was necessary to round this marker to guide paddlers between outer reefs and the coastline.
Athletes relied on GPS co-ordinates and the lead boat to locate the marker. The runs were small, and somewhat messy in the wake of “Silverado” the lead boat.
Conditions were hot and challenging. I had to splash water on myself regularly as I surfed runs to try cool down.
The final 6km was slower than the downwind section, with the wind and swell side on. The arch and flags of the finish line were visible in the distance on Sorrento beach.
The finish was crowded with spectators lining the tunnel up the beach.
Many athletes were seeking medical attention from heat exhaustion due to what was deemed the “most challenging” conditions provided by this year’s Doctor.
In the men’s field Riley Fitsimmons - Australian sprint Olympian made it to the hotspot first - a tactical decision to sprint at the start and paddle easy for the remainder of the race. Cory Hill displayed his dominance and distanced himself from the pack immediately in the downwind section to take the win.
In the women’s field Danielle McKenzie - NZ Olympic sprint hopeful - took the hotspot prize and ended up 2nd place, with Jemma Smith taking the overall win.
Overall, it was an epic event to be a part of - a bucket list crossing.
Hopefully next year we can have a bigger Irish Contingency!
Next up is World Champs tomorrow - Thursday 30th November at 1:30pm.
There has been controversy over organisers decision to move the event from Saturday to Thursday - however the wind conditions are most favourable tomorrow.
Will share live feed / tracking when available.
Thanks, Ró.
Update from Perth - Róisín Cahill
The Doctor - a 27km crossing from Rotnest Island to Sorrento Beach takes place tomorrow in Perth.
The Barge has been packed with boats and paddlers will be ferried out to the island in the morning.
The race will commence sometime between 11am and 1pm depending on when the wind hits.
With $80,000 worth of prizes to be won the competition will be stiff.
This is the final race of the Shaw and Partners WA race week.
Next week will bring the ICF world Championships where Finn Harris will join the Irish contingency.
More updates to follow.
