For my entire life until this point, I have kept my various mental health states and trauma behind closed doors. Now, it feels so good to talk about it. To write about it. To let it out. After writing about these personal issues, I found that I felt better about them. They didnā€™t have such a hold on me. They werenā€™t as scary.

I think of it like this: A few weeks ago, at the beginning of this quarantine, I rewatched the new Star Wars movies and was shocked by how unafraid I was of the stormtroopers. When I was a kid watching the older movies, I was terrified of those white masked zombies. But now, I have been so exposed to their image that they donā€™t bother me anymore. In fact, Iā€™m a bit bored by them. And, like the new movies show, stormtroopers are people too. Thatā€™s kind of how I see my trauma now. After shining a light on the scary and painful events of my past, Iā€™m no longer haunted by them. And I can finally show my past some compassion.

Thatā€™s what this album has done for me - itā€™s allowed me to confront my pain so that it doesnā€™t control or dictate my everyday life. Iā€™ve released it. Given it a proper burial. Allowed it to rest. I am by no means ā€œcured,ā€ but I am happy. I hope the album inspires others to do something similar for themselves.

Being publicly vocal about personal matters however, has its drawbacks and complications. I worry a lot about how my audience will receive this album. Specifically, ā€œTrinity,ā€ at its core, is a poem about the varying emotions that accompany a mental health diagnosis. My father was very much involved in the beginning of my mental health journey, and thus, is mentioned quite often in this poem as well. I just need to publicly say how much I love my father and how proud I am of him for working so very hard on his mental health recovery. This poem is an expression of how my own mental health journey began, and is by no means how the story ends.

If youā€™re still reading this, youā€™re pretty awesome. Video for Trinity drops tomorrow. āœŒšŸ»
