An automatic tensioner is a device that automatically adjusts the tension of the chain in an engine that uses a chain to drive the camshaft.

When it fails, the following symptoms may occur:

Noise: If you hear a squealing sound when starting the vehicle, it is usually a sound related to the auto tensioner. It is a high-pitched sound, such as "screeching" or "tweeting," and it can be caused by looseness in the tensioner, wear on the tensioner belt, or a problem with the tensioner belt coming loose.

Vibration: Since the outer belt is not being pressed with a constant pressure, the vibration generated by the rotation of the belt becomes more severe. (Drivers who are not sensitive may not be able to easily notice.)

Outer belt slippage: If the tension cannot be maintained, it can cause the outer belt to slip. When the outer belt slips, it can get caught on various bearings and cooling fans, causing it to break and damage the main components mounted on the front of the engine.

In these cases, replacing the auto tensioner can solve the problem.
