Dear Friends, Fans, Colleagues, World,

I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years.

Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.

Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.

I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected.

On this Memorial Day, we remember those that served who paid the high price for defending our country! ...for defending our freedom! Do not forget!

Also, remember those courageous ones who made it through the battles only to fall later in pain and anguish from the emotional and physical scars!!! Do not forget!

Let's also remember those police officers that gave their lives courageously defending the Congress, the Capitol, and our country on that dark day. Do not forget!

Hello,

First, I would like to thank everyone for reading this first issue of Speculative Fiction, a no-frills E-Zine for the speculative fiction reader.

I created Speculative Fiction to help share my love of classic sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and mystery stories with those I hope will appreciate them.

I've chosen one of my all-time favorites for our first story. A story titled “Second Variety” by Philip K. Dick. A great story that spawned a great movie in the sci-fi realm.

Then, we have what possibility might be one of the first vampire stories ever published and predates Bram Stocker's Dracula. A story entitled “A Fragment” was written by George 'Lord' Byron for the ghost story competition with Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley, and John William Polidori in 1816.

Finally, a spook story... The Case of Frank Hampden by E.F. Benson rounds out the issue.
