Nostalgia by Nicole
Art that speaks to your sense of Nostalgia, capturing moments and places you love, and salvaged furniture redesigned with a breath of new life.
I blinked and here we are in February 2024!!Started the year inducting my baby into the family tradition of creating her first oil painting. She’s a natural and takes after my Pa just like me.
Have been working on a top secret commission for a dear friend and cannot wait to share it with you all…you’ll have to stay in suspense for a few more weeks.
Thank you for following my art - I hope your year has started with joy!
AVAILABLE - one-of-a-kind pieces!
These stunning antique bedside tables full of the nostalgia of yesteryear, have come a long way (see last photo). It’s taken days of love, sweat and lots of tools, to prepare them for their next incarnation but, my, they take my breath away!
Solid timber, dovetail joints, the original gold sticker that marks them as Hayson designed, the little imperfections of the timber that signify a life well lived - everything about them screams the quality of workmanship of days gone by where things were built with care and pride and made to last.
The sticker has led me on a search to discover the history of the Hayson company and it appears this company was based in Victoria and this style of high-end furniture would pre-date 1950, when they moved to the mid-century style of furniture design.

This is 3 hours in the life of an artist 😊
Decided to start 2023 with a bang - go huge or go home!
I’ve long wanted to capture the pure beauty of a lone wave - it encapsulates every beach side moment of nostalgia evoking all the smells, the sun and breeze playing on your skin and the sand beneath your toes.
First layer of many…
Passing on the joy to the next generation. Pa sent me the genes and died before I was born but luckily for me I get to do the mantle passing in person 😊
My daughter’s first oil painting.

This piece takes me back to a dramatic, stormy sunset where the air was eerily still, passers by pausing on their evening jog or walk to stare in awe at the ever changing cloud formations and wondering how long they could linger in the beauty before they’d be caught in a deluge.
Like a portal into a long lost evening 😊

What a beautiful day - inspiration everywhere and the promise of spring in the air. Perfect for that first warm season ocean swim.
7 years ago a fortuitous moment led me to dig out my easel and paints after years laying idle while I started my family and busied myself with raising babies and working. I was doodling on butchers paper when the cafe owner saw what I’d drawn and asked if I might be open to painting a piece of the Woronora Bridge that the cafe overlooked as a gift to her husband to celebrate 12 months in business.
Sometimes there are surprise pivots in life that I feel are divine, where your direction is shifted and you try something new or rediscover a lost calling…now my easel may sit for weeks as I’m still a busy mother, but it never gets packed away. It stands sentinel at the end of my bed so I’m always reminded to never stop doing what I love.
Hard not to be inspired around here

Coming up a treat!
Pivoting to my other artistic passion today - furniture. It’s been a while but felt so good out in the sun with my other toolkit, scraping back the layers from these majestic old pieces. If these bedsides could speak imagine the nostalgia they could share. They are going to be beauties when I’m finished with them 😊
Very close to finished…a few days of drying time and some finishing touches and it’ll be time for my full stop - my signature. Patience is key with oils as they take so long to dry but the vibrancy is worth it.
Anyone recognise this beautiful spot?

Today has been a Nostalgic journey of my own, cleaning out my garage and finding treasures long forgotten. My artistic gift came courtesy of my Pa - he passed before I was born but I inherited his paint box, his old table where he mixed his paint, his memorabilia of the many times he had articles written about his work or presented paintings to jockeys or politicians who were some of his favoured subjects or about his many entries in the famous Archibald prize...but best of all I inherited his love of oils and landscapes.
Today I found this letter all folded up in an old box, reminding me of the generational bind we have every time I put brush to canvas.
Collecting inspiration from beautiful Como 😊 What a blessing it is to have so many beautiful places to explore in my backyard. I hope you all got your time in the sun today…I dashed out the door the second the clouds parted!

My heart is so full 😊 I was kindly given the opportunity to witness this beautiful piece being presented to a lovely lady from her family. To watch all the faces of these gorgeous people as they saw this moment of nostalgia for them alive on canvas for the first time was just such a joy. I loved doing this piece!
Halfway point for this beautiful commission. Absolutely love working on this piece and couldn’t drag myself away from the easel at all today. Love it when you hit that flow state where time falls away 😊
