I canโt shake that feeling off when I saw this woman in the streets of Cuba ๐จ๐บ
I have created this artwork after visiting
a few years ago! This woman was sitting with her broker arm in front of the entrance of her home. The house was in such bad condition, the paint was peeling of the wall, neglected for so many yearsโฆand she (like that house) was in a very bad condition almost disappearing in that background!
Letโs help the Cubans raise their voices!!! โข

When is that moment when you say to yourself: Thatโs it! I have to do something about it!! When are we going to do something to help these individuals not to get to this point when they barely can stand up! Michael hurt himself a few weeks ago. He is better now. I talked to him when I took this photo. You had to see the smile on his face when he saw me. Like he met an old friend. Today, I would like to extend my gratitude to all individuals who are doing one kind gesture for someone they donโt even know, a stranger, with nothing in return ๐๐๐ป
Itโs been so long since I saw Robert.
Here he is โhelpingโ me putting gas at the local gas station where he usually hang out. Homelessness will not stop by itself. We need to do something about it...
A few years back ๐๐ป
Yesterday while I was driving in my neighborhood I had to take that photo!!!!
This is exactly what Iโm talking about in my art
The contrasts in the city ๐
This sign is referring to the most elegant, lavish, expensive shops in Miami and look who is sitting/laying on the floor underneath it!
I canโt believe I got this PERFECT shot while driving!!! I couldnโt stage it better if I wanted to!
What do you think about the content and this photo????

๐ Trends in Homelessness
Compared to the previous year, homelessness increased by 3 percent in the 2019 Point-in-Time Count. This marked the third straight year of national-level increases.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
Despite this negative movement, the long-term trend has been downward. Overall homelessness has decreased by 12 percent since 2007, the year nation-wide data collection began. The current COVID-19 crisis has the potential to diminish or completely wipe out these modest gains.

Gunny is a Marine Veteran from the Vietnam War. He's been living on the streets for 31 years. When he was in duty, he was a Gunnery Sargeant and that's where his nickname "Gunny" derives from. During the war, he went through some hard times which still haunt him to this day. In spite of everything, he is a sweet and hardworking old man very much appreciated by all his neighbor friends in Miami Beach. They call him "the mayor of the block" because he is always there guarding everyone's cars and able to help out. โค๏ธ

Back in March when was just announced, I went to look for Michael. Since he lives on the streets with no TV, radio or phone, I thought โhow would he know about the latest news?!โโ
โ
I was very happy when I found him. We started talking and apparently he already knew about the pandemic. I asked him if he was hungry and he said YES!โ
Me: I'll go home to cook rice and I'll come back shortly.โ
Michael: What? Only rice??โ
Caught by surprise and very embarrassed ๐ณ I replied: NO, of course not!!โ
A few hours later I came back full of pride with rice, chicken, and vegetables to deliver dinner. Michael was not around so I left it there for him.โ
โ
A few days later I saw him at his location. We were happy to see each other. I was curious to know if he got the food or someone else got it before him.โ
โ
He said: Yes I got it....but why are you not using any SALT ?!!? โ
Needless to say, he caught me by surprise AGAIN! ๐

โWere the homeless always homeless? If not, what brought them to the state of homelessness?โ
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
I came across a very interesting article from The New York Times which discusses homelessness from readers that were homeless at a given point in their life.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
The article mentions "In the dozens of responses we received, readers talked about injury, job loss, domestic violence, mental illness, and addiction."

โHi, I'm Vered Shamir Pasternak, I'm an Israeli artist whoโs lived here in Miami for almost the last two decades. In my practice as an artist Iโm addressing issues I think most immigrants feel or go through sometimes in the journey of moving from one place to another. I, as a lot of people, experienced those feelings of loneliness, missing my homeland, missing my country, my language, my friends, my family, my culture, my music, my food. And so, moving to this beautiful country was not as smooth as I thought it would be. I thought it would be much easier, but in fact I suffered from depression, loneliness, I didnโt feel, and I still donโt feel I belonged after all these years. Thus, in my practice Iโm trying to address all these issues of not feeling belonged. As you can see here behind me Iโm using homeless images, homeless people that I know personally. They live near my house, in my neighborhood where I see them almost every day. It's easier for me to use their images, rather than mine; although, hopefully one day it will be my image there, too. Meanwhile, through working with these homeless people I feel like Iโm healing my own wounds by addressing theirs. So, when Iโm using their image, Iโm actually painting my own feelings as an immigrant here.โ

I met Micheal in Wynwood while I was waiting to pick up my son from school. He came to ask me for change... his eyes, his smile and his gentle approach caught my attention. I started a conversation where in the end he let me photograph him. Since that day we had a lot of encounters where he was always very interested to know if I sold his portrait or not.โ

I met Michael in a Boston subway station. I told him I liked his sign. โWhat matters is what it means to you,โ he told me. I asked what it meant to him. โDoing a deed or expressing kindness to another person without expecting anything in return,โ Michael said. I love approaching strangers wherever I go. Listening and talking to them teaches you about people and how similar we all are to one another. Just like Michael, weโre all seeking human kindness.

โ๏ธFact: One in three homeless people were 24 and younger in 2014, and 37 percent belonged to a family, HUD's survey found. One in 45 US children experiences homelessness each year, according to the National Center on Family Homelessness.
