Hello everyone - tomorrow is the first Sunday of Winter Trading at Kwoorabup Community Markets. Over the next three months we’ll be switching to monthly rather than weekly trading. After tomorrow, our next markets are on July 7th and August 4th, before returning to our regular weekly schedule on the 1st of September.

Hey folks - Kwoorabup Community Markets is switching to Winter Trading this week.

That means from this Sunday we’ll be operating monthly instead of weekly, with markets on the first Sunday of the month. After tomorrow our next markets will be on July 7th and August 4th, before returning to weekly trading on the 1st of September.

Thanks for all your support for Barnhouse Denmark this year, we really appreciate it.

We’ll miss you, but we have such a long to-do list - pruning, winter food garden, firewood collecting and splitting, bush clearing and burning, restocking preserves etc - the time is going to fly!

Before we disappear into the wilds of Scotsdale, one last round of treats for you lovely people.

Woot!

Bananas in the Karri Forest? Hell yeah!

We have been growing bananas here at Barnhouse Denmark for more than ten years, but still get a thrill every time we harvest a stem of delicious fruit.

The banana groves planted around the house clearing help create a broad leaf humid micro climate, good for fire mitigation and great for food production (…and they look pretty fab too).

The fruit is very different to commercial bananas in both taste and appearance - short and squat, not unlike ladyfingers, with a delightful almost floral fragrance and a rich citrusy vanilla flavor. They seem to fruit on their own schedule - in all weathers and seasons, so every stem is serendipitous. This week we got three of them!

So… we’re sharing the love this Sunday at Kwoorabup Community Markets with our Barnhouse Denmark Gluten Free Banana Caramel Blondie. A white chocolate batter swirled and studded with beautiful bananas and decadent Dulce De Leche. Yum.

Howdy folks - Barnhouse Denmark is back at Kwoorabup Community Markets this Sunday with an array of luscious treats!!

Who doesn’t love a Terry’s Chocolate Orange?

As kids in NZ, we thought they were the poshest thing ever. We just couldn’t wait for that moment to ‘tap then unwrap’, watch it magically fall into perfect individual segments (each one a mirror image of it’s box mates, so we couldn’t bicker over who got the ‘biggest’ piece) and then slowly melt it’s heavenly, creamy, orangey deliciousness on our tongues. Sadly, as they were only ever for extra special occasions, there was a lot of waiting.

So… we’re making this Sunday extra special with our Gluten Free Terry’s Chocolate Orange Brownie.

A dark chocolate batter with fresh orange, milk choc chunks and a Terry’s segment to finish. The aroma of it cooking!

Our Barnhouse Denmark rhubarb patch has been going gangbusters this summer and we have been loving it!

Sharing is caring though - right? So we whipped up a batch of Rhubarb + Raspberry Jam this week for our Barnhouse Denmark stall at the Kwoorabup Community Markets and as it’s intoxicating aroma filled the house it got us thinking… this jam is so good it really deserves it’s own cake!

But not just any cake - we’re going blonde!

This is our Gluten Free Rhubarb + Raspberry White Chocolate Bakewell Blondie.

What the #@%! is a blondie you might ask. A blondie is a white chocolate brownie. We have added our delectable Rhubarb + Raspberry Jam, white choc chunks and almonds to the mix, inspired by the classic Bakewell Tart. It smells so good.

But we haven’t abandoned those of you committed to the dark side. We have a fabulous old-school fave just for you - GF Dark Chocolate Orange Rum + Raisin Brownie. Hell yeah.

Our Barnhouse Denmark gluten free brownie for this week’s Kwoorabup Community Markets is an absolute treat for spice lovers!

Gluten Free Dark Chocolate Masala Chai Spiced Fruit + Nut Brownie.

We plumped the beautiful Australian Muscat Sultanas overnight in a heady brew of cloves, cinnamon, star anise, cardamom, ginger and other spices, then added it to the deep dark chocolate mix along with hazelnuts and caramel brittle milk chocolate chunks.

The cooking aroma is divine. The taste is out of this world!

…but if chocolate doesn't float your boat fear not!

The ripe figs generated by the bout of hot weather have sadly come to an end, but we have saved the last of them for some Fig, Honey + Almond Tarts. Fresh Calimyrna figs, almond meal and deeply fragrant Wafra Honey Yellow Tingle Honey. Bliss.

Come on down!!

Well… those Calimyrna Fig, Honey + Almond tarts were a hit at last week’s Kwoorabup Community Markets, selling out in a flash. Sorry to all those folks who missed out, but we will have more this Sunday at our Barnhouse Denmark Stall. My advice is to get in quick!

We have been eyeballing the fig tree every day and getting up at dawn to shoo off the crows. Who’d have thought the Australian Raven would be so fond of figs? Luckily the Marri is flowering, so at least the Silvereyes are busy with that.

But one of old Corvus Perplexis’ superpowers is knowing exactly when the figs are ready to eat. Their call at dawn is a pretty good sign that there are ripe figs (or avocados!) for the taking. It is the same birds coming every year and they are not a bit bothered by us, coming in close for a bit of eyeballing of their own, with that all knowing blue-white gaze. It is a most interesting feeling to have prolonged eye contact with such a wild and enigmatic creature.

So… Fig, Honey + Almond Tarts. Made with spray free Calimyrna figs, vegan pastry, almond meal, a dollop of fabulous Wafra Honey Karri Honey and a drizzle of Organic Vanilla Bean paste. Sweet.

Over the last few weeks the Barnhouse Denmark garden has really suffered in the hot weather and it has taken committed deep watering to keep everything alive. But there’s always an upside isn’t there?

The fig tree is absolutely loving it! Over the last week it has produced these huge, succulent, fragrant fruit and there’s plenty more on the way! We love figs and our tree is prolific but it has been fruiting later and later in the last couple of years. Looks like this year we might get a proper Autumn crop. Woot!

All this deliciousness is too good not to share so we have made a few of these for this Sunday’s Kwoorabup Community Markets.

This week’s Barnhouse Denmark brownie brings on a wave of nostalgia …

Growing up in EnZed, we knew this golden confection as Russian Fudge. Mum never made it at home, and that combined with the ‘Russian’ element, led us to imagine it must be conjured from mysterious and magical ingredients. Whenever we would spy it at gala days or fetes, we would desperately covet it.

Now older and wiser, we understand that it was more about sensible choices - heating sugar to lava-like temperatures with a bunch of ratbag kids underfoot is probably unwise.

With that in mind, and observing full safety precautions, we have revisited this Kiwi classic, with less sugar and a generous pinch of Southern Ocean sea salt.

Hey presto… Gluten Free Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel Fudge Brownie.

Here is this week’s extravaganza…
Gluten free Orange Rum + Raisin Dark Choc Chunk Brownie.

Fair trade dark chocolate, organic dried fruits plumped in homemade orange syrup, homemade candied peel, dark choc chunks and a touch of smoky spiced rum to finish.

Oh yeah.
