Itās ! All month weāll be featuring spotlight interviews with members of Team Tend about what Pride means in their lives, starting with Eric, our Ortho Team Lead.
Whatās something youāre excited to do in celebrating your identity and Pride?
āI feel so grateful that New York has such a huge Pride presence throughout the month of June. I am so excited to unite with the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate the strides we have made toward equality, while recognizing the great work ahead of us, particularly in creating safe spaces for Trans youth.ā
What does it mean to you that Tend is celebrating Pride Month?
āTendās celebration and recognition of Pride Month shows integrity towards our core value of embracing our differences ā we are more than just another company changing our logo into a rainbow for the month of June. To me, uniting our Tend community of LGBTQ+ team members and allies is a display of our authentic desire to build strong connections and support each other and our Members.ā
As comes to a close, we have one last interview in the series with Nico, Studio Manager at Tend Kendall Square.
What does your culture mean to you? How do you celebrate your cultural heritage?
My cultural heritage as a Filipino is a staple of everything I do. From the attitude and personality of resilience, hard work, and finding ways to smile even through tough situations, I have found ways to mesh my cultural heritage and my work ethic.
What are some of your favorite traditions from your culture?
Filipinos are about hospitality, and sharing food is our love language. If you haven't been to a Filipino party, you will see trays of food, and karaoke. Don't be surprised if you keep getting offered another plate of foodāeven if you still have a plate in hand, it's just our way to make our guests feel welcomed.
What can employers do to create a more inclusive workplace?
I believe the meaning of creating a more inclusive workplace is less about observable actions, and more about actually creating a sense of culture and supportive environment that allows people to express their cultural heritage. Allowing leaders to be empathetic leaders, and actually listen to concerns and ideas to find ways to make them happen can help create inclusive workplaces.
Celebrating one year of Tend West Village (formerly Hudson Square)! We have enjoyed every minute of tending to our membersā smiles and helping them look forward to the dentist. Thank you to all of the members of who made this possible. Hereās to year 2!
is coming to a close, but weāre going to celebrate until the last day. Hereās another spotlight interview, this time with Stella, Studio Manager at Tend Upper West Side.
What is your ethnic background and/or nationality?
Chinese American, but my family are from Myanmar. I often throw in this bit of detail when I speak to people because the way we grew up, the food we ate, the clothes we wore, and our culture merge and vary uniquely and it's something to note! To give you all an idea, I learned as an adult that I spoke two very different languages in one sentence when I thought I was just speaking Chinese. In fact, I was speaking both Chinese and Burmese at the same time.
What are some of your favorite traditions from your culture?
There are two most recent family practices that have had an impact on me this year: the Chinese Tea Ceremony and the "annual cemetery visit to our ancestors".
Our culture is very familial centric. For years, I've always participated or have been around these events like The Tea Ceremony or visiting my ancestors with my family at the cemetery. The tradition always seemed bulky, boring, and unrelatable. During my engagement period and getting married this past year, learning to build my own family - suddenly these traditions have a new weight to them. The Tea Ceremony is when the couple kneels before their parents and relatives to pour tea. In response, the parents or elders of the family share their blessings to the new couple through words of blessings and/or gifts. The blessings and gifts are to further the family bond and tree.
The annual visit to the cemetery happens at the start of Spring. It's often cold and mostly rainy. As a kid I found this to be really long and boring. We would lug large amounts of food and "heaven money" to burn in front of our ancestors' gravesites. This would all serve as an offering to our ancestors. This was my first year going with my new family - his family. It felt particularly special and I felt a different sense of responsibility. I found this event to be reflective and also a time to reconnect with our current family.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Weāre celebrating the voices and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders at Tend. We talked with Dr. Ho, and hereās part of the interview.
Whatās most meaningful to you about your heritage?
My ethnic background and nationality is Chinese-American. More specifically, of Cantonese descent from Hong Kong. My culture means immigration, search for a better life, traditional meals, acculturation, Chinese holidays, superstitions, and care for our elders and children. I celebrate my cultural heritage by keeping up with Chinese traditions and sharing that experience with my friends and family.
What are some of your favorite traditions?
Some of my favorite traditions are Lunar New Year celebrations and the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon festival. Both holidays follow the lunar calendar, signal a change in the year, and involve a gathering of friends and family. Preparation of certain types of foods and treats, like longevity noodles and moon cake, are made and shared to symbolize long life and happiness.
What can employers do to create a more inclusive workplace?
Employers can create a more inclusive workplace by recognizing one or two cultural traditions throughout the year that highlight the values of a particular ethnicity. Many people can relate to the history of immigrant families and assimilation into American culture. When employers highlight cultural traditions in a monthly or bi-weekly post it provides a sense of awareness, cultural parallels, and inclusion for everyone.
