I was glad to see our show up, and welcome our friends and family to Try this at home - five artists’ works as installations at b: Atelier, Batlow. With the intention of creating contemplative spaces, Jennifer Crain, Brenda Dyack, Tabitha Hocking, Donna Longobardi and myself had been working toward this show for months. Each of us has made work that we could not have predicted at the outset.
This comes from a short essay I wrote about the exhibition:
Being in the presence of things – collected, gathered, made and arranged in ways that please you – can be a gentle space where you can ‘hear yourself think.’ Incessant, speedy doing has been considered not only normal, but the sign of a good person in Western culture for a long time. The events of the last year, however, have disrupted ‘normal’ so thoroughly, there’s a strong sense that it’s possible to live in ways that are more creative, kind and wise.
One of the most respected CEO’s in The US - Keith Cunningham - tells how the greatest contributing factor to his astonishing career was and continues to be thinking time. A ritualised process for Cunningham, he prepares 3-5 questions, clears his calendar for an hour, turns off his phone and closes the door. What has this got to do with art? Looking at art can help us regain contact with ourselves, when our work and living environments might do the opposite notes Christophe Andre, author of 'Looking at Mindfulness: Twenty-five Paintings to Change the Way you Live.' Thinking time is about stopping, enquiring inwardly and considering the best choices to make. I’m reminded of philosopher Hannah Arendt’s request after WWII: 'Love the world, think what you do.' With art we can create environments that interrupt old patterns of rushing through life.
The artists have gone beyond a contemplative intent to create mini-environments that inspire gentleness, remembering, good humour, gratitude, joy and awe, which have the power to positively change your neurophysiology, your thoughts, and consequently, your life. I’m delighted and grateful to have witnessed each artist’s creative development during the last year. Seeing their visions realised and sharing the outcomes are not small things. (more photos coming soon)
'Try this at Home' is an exhibition of contemplative installations by 5 artists - see the invitation - at b:Atelier in Batlow, opening this weekend. Saturday we're fully booked for the opening, but Sunday we're open too. There are artist talks most weekends over the next few weeks until April 11. We look forward to welcoming you to see our show!

resonant writing from my friend Deborah:
Antifragility and Art Making - Slow Muse Note: A few weeks ago I gave a guest lecture for the MFA students at Long Island University Post. At the time I referred to my remarks as a “shop talk:” gathering with fellow tradespeople to share some work wisdom. Art making can resemble a kind of guild after all, one that adheres to the …

Living Beautifully with Uncertainty and Change • Book We live in difficult times. Life sometimes seems like a roiling and turbulent river threatening to drown us and destroy the world. Why, then, shouldn’t we cling to the certainty of the shore—to our familiar patterns and habits? Because, Pema Chodron teaches, that kind of fear-based clinging keep...

Where art lives - The Painters Keys Dear Artist, Along the Alabama River just south of Selma, there’s a horseshoe-shaped turn resembling an inland island, where a cotton plantation once stood. In 1816, 18 slaves were brought to this bend by a man named Gee from North Carolina. A generation later, his cousin, Pettway, took over the p...

with anything I post here, check out with an open mind, and let pass on through anything that doesn't resonate. The 'tongue in cheek' irony here is part of conceptual art. I love painting and always will. There's an alchemy to making a painting from yearning; having enough skills and getting out of your own way to let something happen. Something that the everyday thinking mind might consider to be 'nothing much' but it's those things that are new; that I may not know how to see yet, that I'm at risk of throwing away... and have, regrettably, many times.
Fourteen assignments from John Baldessari - The Painters Keys In 1970, John Baldessari was teaching studio art at Cal Arts, while enduring a crisis of faith in his own semi-abstracts. He took everything he’d ever made to a San Diego mortuary and cremated it, baked the ashes into cookies, stuffed them into a bronze urn shaped like a book, then engraved a plaq...
