In 1919, Adler established the first of several child guidance clinics in Vienna after serving for three years as a physician in the Austrian army during World War I. His clinical treatment methods for adults were aimed at uncovering the hidden purpose of symptoms using the therapeutic functions of insight and meaning.

Adler had piercing eyes, a soft voice, and a friendly manner. He spoke slowly, with occasional silences, in a conciliatory, persuading tone. He was unusually open to people and was very sociable and hospitable. He loved the arts, especially music, and had a fine voice and enjoyed singing. He was a tireless worker, leaving little time for sleep. In therapeutic relationships he had a gift for disarming gentleness, acceptance, and encouragement.

Alfred Adler suffered from rickets (a vitamin D deficiency) and spasms of his vocal cords, both of which made physical activity very difficult during his early childhood years. He was often forced to sit on a bench while watching his older brother run and jump. As he recovered, he joined his brother and the other local children in playing in a large field. Despite the fact that there were very few vehicles at the time, and those that were there moved very slowly, Adler was run over twice! Fortunately, he was not injured seriously. One of his younger brothers, however, had died suddenly when Adler was 4, an event that deeply affected him. And when Adler was 5, he came down with a serious case of pneumonia. After he had been examined by the doctor, Adler heard the doctor tell his father that there was no point in caring for Adler any more, as there was no hope for his survival. Adler was stricken with terror, and when he recovered he resolved to become a doctor so that he might have a better defense against death (Bottome, 1957; Manaster, et al., 1977; Sperber, 1974).

Adler, influenced by Marxist ideals of equality and justice, was a feminist. He joined the Socialist party (whose platform in 1885 was the first in history to embrace the equality of women). He later married Raissa Epstein (a Muscovite who had come to Vienna to study), also a feminist and socialist. Adler was politically active until he formed the Comparative Individual Psychology Society, from which time he devoted himself to the development of his psychology, never losing sight of the need for social change.

In 1937 psychoanalyst Alfred Adler passed away in Aberdeen, Scotland while on a lecture tour at the university. Adler had been a member of Freudโ€™s inner circle in Vienna until they split in 1911 and is remembered for his development of the theory of the inferiority complex.

His passing came at a time when Europe was on the brink of the Second World War and his family lost track of his remains. Seventy-four years later, The Guardian has reported that Adlerโ€™s ashes have been sitting in a crematorium in Edinburgh all this time. They were discovered by John Clifford, the honorary Austrian consul to Scotland, who had been asked to find them by the Society for Individual Psychology, a group originally founded by Adler himself.

This is in Sigmund Freudโ€™s house where Adler was invited to join an informal discussion group that includes Rudolf Reitler and Wilhelm Stekel. They talk about the psychoanalytic movement where each member would present a paper and discuss it.

As Alfred Adler presents his theory of Individual Psychology, coining that people would undergo the process of striving for superiority, stating that people are largely responsible for who they are, these three groups are likely the groups that Adler would love to have himself indulged with as he would seek to tell the world, the humans, in order to help them find and understand themselves while striving in shaping their present behaviors as they view the future.

Adler would love to contribute and share his views in these following groups to be able to complete a person's understanding over oneself, seeking to view theories of personality relatable in every person's life.

The Wednesday Psychological Society

Sigmund Freud once sent postcards to his colleagues, one of them is Alfred Adler, to invite them to his house on Wednesday after dinner. And this was how the Wednesday Psychological Society started and grew until its rebirth, the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society where Adler became the first president. Along Alfred Adlerโ€™s journey with this group, he met people who he became friends with.

Biography of Alfred Adler

Alfred Adler was an Austrian physician and psychiatrist. He lived in Penzing, Austria and was Born in Rudolfsheim, Vienna, Austria on February 7, 1870 and died in Aberdeen, Scotland on May 28, 1937. He is the second son of middle-class Jewish parents named Pauline and Leopold Adler. Since he was a little, Adler was seen as the weak and sickly child among his siblings. He suffered from rickets. His early childhood was never ideal because he got traumatized when he was 3, he saw his younger brother die in the next bed, and nearly died of pneumonia at age 5. Also, he was run over in the streets twice during those days. And hated his brother, Sigmund Adler, for having a good health and as a good industrious fellow. In the early 1900s, Adler met regularly with Sigmund Feud as he began to develop psychoanalysis. Yet Adler soon parted ways with Freud to begin his own branch of therapy, which would become Adlerian therapy or individual psychology.

He attended elementary school with neither difficulty nor distinction, he became a medical student and received his medical degree in 1895, and an eye specialist however, he gave up that specialization and turned to psychiatry and general medicine. Then, he practiced being neurologist and psychiatrist. He also became lecture/speaker in United States. Afterwards, he married a Russian woman, Raissa Epstein, in December 1897. She was an early feminist and much more political than him. They had four children: Alexandra & Kurt, who became psychiatrists and continued their fatherโ€™s work; Valentine (Vali), who died as a political prisoner of the Soviet Union in about 1942; Cornelia (Nelly) who aspired to be an actress. Adlerโ€™s favorite relaxation was music but he was also active in art and literature, and he loved to read literary works as well.
