SPEAR IN BETWEEN
CHAPTER 1
It’s one of the special months in Spring, an 18 year-old teenager named Dumazile is inside the slanting shack of her ill grandmother, maNgema, lying down and counting her endless problems on the tired matte filled with devastations. Every time she looks at her poor grandmother, her heart begins to move into places where broken souls are found.
MaNgema calls, “Dumazile?” her voice is lazy, mouth is dry, breathing combines sorrowful melody, and she looks depressed and hopeless.
Sniffing, she responds, “Gogo.”
“Come my grandchild,” she says with a smile hiding unsympathetic pains.
Quickly, she gets up and wipe the rivers on her eyes, “Gogo I’m here.”
Then maNgema heavily points something on her left, it looks old and greyish. Wires, glues and plastics are strongly tightened to keep it alive.
“Turn it on,” she caughs, “I have a feeling that I might hear good news.”
As she turns it on, Dumazile’s heart skips a bit. She’s that one focus beautiful Zulu girl with innocent eyes, walk filled dignity, tight muscles tones, body well shaped, firm breasts and buttocks, and with African hair that blossom with the newborn flowers of the humble trees, she’s a pure soul with light complexion.
The radio presenter announces.
“To all Zulu girls, the queen mother’s village is longing for your repair of windbreaks.”
Excited, Dumazile asks, “Gogo did you hear that?” she goes outside, she jumps and jumps, and add with Zulu dances, “I hope it brings the best in me.”
***
A while later, a saw finds comforts on Dumazile’s soft hands that are filled with warmth, her calves shake the steady soil with the power of fallen legends that runs in her veins, and as she heads to the bush, a whistle strikes in her ears.
“Oh black child!” a shepherd shouts while sitting on a rock, “You’re an angel on earth!”

CHAPTER 3.2
Musa was the only politically orientated person in the house. He had taken after his father, who had lost his life during political struggles. After his father’s death, the family suffered until Mama Khumalo got a job as a maid at the Viljoen’s home. Sizwe assisted financially in the house, unlike his brother Musa.
“Look, brother, there is a new movement in town, and they have even gotten us jobs, but since I did not complete my matric, only you can apply, little bro,” Musa said, handing Sizwe pamphlets, and then left.
“What is written on them?” Mama Khumalo asked.
“Democratic Government Restoration Movement. Get rid of illegal foreigners, discipline the corrupt government, and bring back our South Africa! A movement of the country’s white sheep,” Sizwe responded, reading the pamphlet.
“I mean the job,” Mama Khumalo said.
“Gorbin Industries Law Enforcement Recruitment,” Sizwe responded. “Apply by sending an email with your CV to [email protected], and get a reply of acceptance or rejection instantly.”
“Apply, now!” Mama Khumalo said.
“There is rejection also,” Sizwe responded.
“Just apply Sizwe!” Mama Khumalo said.
Sizwe took his cell phone and emailed his CV. “They accepted my application! No ways!” he said, sounding amazed.
“Yes ways, what does it say?” Mama Khumalo asked.
“I am required to go to Gorbin Industries in Jo’burg in 3 weeks, provide security with my candidate number, 015, and start training,” he responded. “There is no screening tests required, and you are accepted only if you are medically fit.”
“Wow, that is great news,” Mama Khumalo said, hugging Sizwe. “Where is Musa? This calls for a celebration.”
Tell us: What do you think about Mama Khumalo saying apartheid was a better time than today?

CHAPTER 3
***A week later in Randfontein, Mohlakeng***
Mama Khumalo sang a song she used to hear her parents sing during their struggle for freedom. While she was singing, Sizwe walked in after doing some gardening work in one of their neighbour’s yards.
“Someone feels good today,” Sizwe said, entering the kitchen.
“I am remembering the good times we experienced in life as children,” Mama Khumalo responded.
“Isn’t that an apartheid song?” Sizwe asked. “That is not a good time’s song.”
“You know, my son, I think apartheid was better than the life we are living now,” Mama Khumalo said.
“Mama?” Sizwe responded, sounding troubled. “When you used to live in fear for your lives. They forced you to go through things you did not want to and treated you like animals.”
“At least we stood together as one, unlike now, when we are fighting against our own race,” Mama Khumalo said. “The youth is addicted to drugs, and you walk around n**e, arousing each other to r**e and impregnating each other with no jobs. On the other hand, the government is failing us with its promises. It is like we fought and died for nothing.”
“Mama, do not make me sad,” Sizwe said.
While they were talking, they heard a group of people chanting “mayibuye inkululeko yethu!” (may our freedom come back) outside. Musa then barged into the house.
“Sizwe, woza! (Come), we are going to restore order in our country,” Musa said.
“What now, Musa?” Mama Khumalo asked.

Good read everyone ❤️💯‼️
REST IN BED
A young woman full of emptiness comes home
Dressed in black she puts her handbag on the bed.
Then she puts her hat on the bed
She turns around and sits on the bed
She looks up on the roof and lies there looking up,
A scent from the bed sheets fills her nostrils
And she apologises for what’s to come
She puts his last words on the bed, ‘I’ll live forever.’
She puts his last kiss on the bed
She puts their last fight on the bed
She puts their favourite song on the bed
Along with their last cuddle on the bed
And she smiles, but tears break her smile on the bed.
She imagines him next to her on the bed
But he quickly changes to the call that told her of his death.
She holds her belly, now she’ll be alone with the baby they never had.
Who she’ll also put on the bed.
But how much more is the bed going to keep taking in?
She weeps in thanks of all the bed accepts of her
The strength, balance and comfort it gives.
But then, if her Njabulo didn’t live forever
Will the bed do?

CHAPTER 2.3
***China Town, Johannesburg CBD, 10:00pm***
Two man met under a bridge. One came out of a black Audi, dressed in a black suite, and the other came out of an orange Ford Ranger. The man in the suit handed the other one papers without greeting him. He then went through them.
“You will execute it?” the man in the suit asked.
“You are planning on putting the country in lockdown, Mister?” the second man responded.
“I am giving out justice to those who are willing to fight for it, so?” the man in the suit asked.
“It will take a few days to organise a few men and get everyone to agree,” the second man responded. “However, it is not a big deal. I have done this for many years, even if it was not at this scale. It is easy for our people to fall for something like this, especially when you include a little cash and booze.”
“Take all the time you need,” the man in the suit said. “But you only get a few weeks to pull it off.”
“So, will you insure my family’s safety in all of this?” the other man asked.
“Just give me their names, and I will make sure every one of you gets a place in it,” the man in the suit promised.
“Okay, see you, Mister,” the other responded, and then left with the papers.

CHAPTER 2.2
After a while, Mr Gorbin came in with an ugly look on his face. When Sheila noticed him, she covered her steps and pretended to be inspecting to some plants.
“People! We are done for the day!” Mr Gorbin yelled. When he saw Sheila, he went to talk to Dr Kent about her. “I want you to keep an eagle’s eye on Sheila,” he said. “We cannot trust her.” After speaking to Dr Kent, he went to Sheila. “Sheila,” he said. “What are your thoughts on all of this?”
“It is great, Mr Gorbin,” she responded. “I do not know how a man with no knowledge in science came up with such an invention.”
“Yeah, you are free to go now,” Mr Gorbin said. “We are done for today.”
“See you tomorrow Doctor,” she responded.
Everyone went out, and Mr Gorbin stood alone, looking at everything. Out of all his creations, that was the best one. After a while, he switched off the lights. He then took a chair and sat in the dark. He held his chin and signed while thinking. Who would have known that the bright ideas of a great businessman were actually born in darkness.

CHAPTER 2
Mr Mkhize sent Sheila to their basement where Mr Gorbin conducted his serum experiments with the company’s new recruits. When she got there, she analysed the animals which they had been using to test the drugs on. Mr Mkhize trusted her, so he sent her to perform an examination of the experiments.
“It is incredible, the serum totally gets rid of pain and emotions,” she said, sounding amazed.
“Yes, you destroy the subject the way you wish, but it does not feel anything,” Dr Kent responded. “It does not even die, unless you roughly damage its internal organs. However, after some time, it regenerates and becomes alive again. It is like it does not die at all. We will be making the world’s first superheroes.”
“Any side effects?” Sheila asked.
“That is the only issue,” Dr Kent responded. “After the regeneration process, our subjects cannot recover fully, and they become mentally unstable. Basically, they become children, and you need to teach them everything from the start. It is like they are born again, but as adults.”
“Oh, that is bad,” Sheila said.
“Yes, if we are able to correct that, we will start using it, and we will test it for the first time with humans,” Dr Kent responded.
“Oh,” Sheila said, sneaking behind the doctor’s computer and analysing the serum’s molecule structure.

Chapter 1.2 [Continued]
“You do not see this,” Mr Mkhize responded. “Imagine a person who does not feel anything. A person who does not feel sympathy and does not love or care. He is a complete animal capable of doing anything. If you are able to chop off your limbs without feeling any pain, imagine your actions to others.”
“There is a war coming, so imagine this as a powerful weapon,” Mr Gorbin said. “We will dominate the whole world and become its ruler. Consider this: our army will be unstoppable. So will our police officers and firefighters. I mean, everyone, even children.”
“I do not know how you created this drug, but I believe it will all end here,” Mr Mkhize declared.
“You do not know how much hard work I put into this,” Mr Gorbin responded. “My late father invented this, and I put all my resources into fulfilling it. I just chose you to share the profits with, but why don’t you see the bright side?”
“First of all, you broke the law of the company by performing experiments without my awareness, and using innocent animals for experimentation,” Mr Mkhize said. “We are shutting downall your operations under Mkhize Industries.”
“You are making a big mistake, Mr Mukhize,” Mr Gorbin responded. “This is something both of us need in our lives. Besides, there are many other people who will gain interest on my invention.”
“You are not allowed to do that,” Mr Mkhize responded. “According to the contract we agreed to, what you create under this company’s name stays here. So when you leave, you have to leave the serum behind.”
Instead of responding, Mr Gorbin left the office and shut the door with force. Mr Mkhize then took in a deep breath and spun his chair around to look at the buildings behind him. He wondered if, perhaps, his partnership with Gorbin was a bad idea. However, he knew that despite his own reputation in the business world, he could not maintain the company’s function, and they almost went bankrupt, which was why they needed Gorbin’s help.

CHAPTER 1.2
***Two weeks earlier***
The day was bright at Mkhize Industries: an organisation that specialised in medicine. It is known for its long contribution to South Africa’s health industry. It is a private company that works closely with the government, providing the country with the best solutions for its medical needs.
Six years prior, the company decided to partner up with Gorbin Industries, which assists it with the transportation of its medicine to the neighbouring countries and overseas.
With Mr Gorbin’s experience in the business industry, he did not take long to become the Vice President of Mkhize Industries, right below Mr Mkhize, who was about to retire in a few years. One day, Mr Gorbin entered into Mr Mkhize’s office.
“Sorry I am late, my last meeting took longer than I expected,” Mr Gorbin said.
“No problem, sit down,” Mr Mkhize responded.
“So, what is your view on the serum?” Mr Gorbin asked.
“Mr Gorbin, it is good, but rather than saving and bettering our country’s citizen’s lives, I think it will cause a destruction,” Mr Mkhize responded.
“I do not see the serum as a destruction at all,” Mr Gorbin said. “Look, Mr Mukhize, I do not see why you are thinking that way. No one on earth has ever created this. We are the first and only ones in Africa. It is a chance for us to lead the world in health science.”
“That is your problem, Mr Gorbin, you are all about competition and being the first one to ever create something,” Mr Mkhize responded. “I understand that that is how business works, but not in Medicine. We are all about saving lives and thinking about the future.”
“Look, we will create the first drug which gets rid of pain and emotions in the human body,” Mr Gorbin said. “It is like we have given ourselves freedom, a cure to our human weakness.”

CHAPTER 1.1
***Johannesburg, South Africa***
Breaking News: “The xenophobic violence in Jo’burg helped fuel the current crisis of riots in South Africa.”
Thobela Newspaper Report: “The enemy is not foreigners, but the government’s failure to realise that, as citizens, we are being manipulated.”
Mphakathi Radio Report: “Up to 90% of the complaints received around the country concern racism – the commission will host a key conference to discuss it.”
South African Riots: “Looting and unrest leave 69 dead after crowds that were looting and setting shopping centres alight clashed with The Gorbin Law Enforcement Officers, who were deployed to aid the police in several cities on Tuesday.”
President Chris Dupe called the acts some of the most violent ever witnessed in South Africa since the 1990s, right before the end of apartheid.
“These Gorbin Law Enforcement Officers are not human,” one of the protesters said, shedding tears. “They kill us like animals, and they are merciless. We are fighting terminators. How can they beat us to death while they are on fire? We are only fighting to get our voices heard, and the deaths and looting are unfortunate events. This government is corrupt, together with its laws!”

What they don't know, by Sifiso Makwakwa
I love her,
Like it's her last day in the world,
Like I'll not be there tomorrow,
Like she's the only women alive.
I love her,
With the scars she has,
So to give her hope in life again,
For her to believe in men again,
So she loves our sons and daughters equally,
So she loves again with trust,
I love her,
So she feels safe again,
So she trusts in men again,
So she believes,
that not all men are the same.

DELUSIONS
I fell inside her womb,
and i lost my breath
in the midst of suffocating
i saw who she really is.
Her hands are so soft and comforting,
she has known me since birth,
but i had forgotten her touch,
memories washed away by ages,
ages that made me care less about her.
Never have i asked who she was,
she lived in varients of herself,
she wore different colours and textures,
she had different tastes and purpose,
but on thing remains, she is water.

THE FALL - PART 1 - BY SIFISO MAKWAKWA
PUBLISHED ON FUNDZA 2022
On one of the sunny days in Pienaar, two friends, aged between six and five, were playing tag in a rocky outcrop. The day was filled with laughter and the sweat of happiness tightened their skin to their shirts. Their feet tapped to the music they listened to. It was an age of enjoyment, back when life never went the wrong way – at least they believed so. The more they ran and jumped across the rock, one after another, the more fun it became. Each second they grew more tired, danger came closer, but they believed they were getting stronger and stronger.
One of them, 5-year-old Sifiso, was on and was trying to tag the other. He fell into desperation since he was exhausted now and couldn’t jump and run fast enough to tag Thapelo. All thought of safety was washed away as he leapt between the rocks. Strange noises played in his mind like grinding metal, taunting him to the fact that there was no time left to lose. His heart raced faster and his feet tapped even faster. He took a high jump towards a sharp-surfaced rock. His jump was not long enough to clear the gap. He crash-landed on to its sharp surface and grabbed it by his teeth.
In seconds, the whole play flashed through his mind in silence as a dream, and then he bounced back to reality. He was blasted by a severe pain in his mouth. It was watering with a sour mixture of blood and tears. The blood coloured his white t-shirt.
