Hey Everyone,

Another 5 hours and the boiler is complete.

Just having to finish the frame and drivers, then it's ready to be put back together.

Final additions is the ESU Loksound Decoder, then we'll be set to run her over Mullan Pass.

Hey Everyone,

Update 2: After 7 hours of weathering, the tender is completed.

I've weathered the coal and it looks rather nice to my eye, though the camera on my phone likes to wash out the model way too much.

Hey Everyone,

At this time I've started weathering the first of 3 different steam locomotives.

I've started to use some AK Interactive weathering paints, specifically the Aircraft engine oil as it is much better in appearance for grease and dirty oil for journal boxes and oil fired locomotives.

I also applied some oxide red (burnt sienna) on the water hatches to show rusty water spots mixed with hard water evaporation.

Happy Everyone!

As of now this Hocking Valley Mikado is ready for weathering.

The Safety Valves on this model are representing a steel casting from the Nathan Manufacturing for their Safety Valves.

Yes its an oxide brown as it's part of my weathering process for this locomotive.

Hey Everyone,

Here's the latest decal progress for ATSF 3753.

The version that was provided follows the appearance of these 4-8-4s without the big SANTA FE lettering on the tender and so this model is being done to match the reference images I've acquired for this project.

I do plan on adding the tender data too, but the majority is complete.

Here's a paint comparison between my trucks painted with PPG auto paint, Specifically OMNI MAE 1 part paint. On top of it I made a custom satin coat mixing 6 parts Dupli-color Lacquer Clear Gloss and 1.5 parts testors(Rust-Oleum) Dullcoat together thinned down with 8 parts Rust Oleum Lacquer thinner. I baked each layer 1 hour each, two layers jet black and 1 layer Satin clear. I'd Say it looks pretty nice in my opinion.

Hey Everyone,

Here's the progress on ATSF 3753. This is a model for a client that sent a model that was damaged in shipping.

It originally had a bunch of bismuth metal melted inside of it to weigh it down.

The only problem is it got saturated in the soldering joints of the model and the front steps on the right side came off.

I repaired it and added a whistle pull rod to the model as well.

The frame has been rebuilt where the drawbar attaches and the back of the cab screws down to.

The rods and wheels have had a lot of adjustments and new rod screws have been installed to make sure the model rolls smoothly before installing the motor and gearbox.

Hey Everyone,

Here's today's progress on the Hocking Valley Railway Class M-1 2-8-2 Mikado for my client.

The pilot has finally gotten the final details added with a movable uncoupling lever to match the standards of a quality model I provide to my clients.

The Tender has been getting decals applied to it and will soon be complete.

Hey Everyone,

Today I'm making some prototype parts for replacing the drivers on a brass model that has failed to keep its drivers quartered. The Axle holes on the original drivers were just big enough allowing the wheels to easily be turned out of quarter by hand with little effort. So I've taken the liberty to use Autodesk Fusion 360 to design prototypes of the replacement universal style designed driver based off the original wheels, but instead of being made from a poor white metal, these will be cast in brass and shouldn't end up coming out of quarter.

Hey Everyone,

In today's post I wanted to share the work of soldering all new details on one side of this 2-8-2 Mikado to look like a Hocking Valley/C&O Class M-1 2-8-2. The client has been very specific on the locomotives appearance and right now it's almost ready for painting. The only parts that need to be completed is the ash dump rods and the class/marker lights for service types.

Hey Guys, I just wanted to share the completion of these three CNS&M Interurban Electrics.

I started my first Natural Sunlight Photo series with the current progress on my new outdoor photo scene diorama. The track is code 55 with the bridge guard rails being code 40.

As you can see the ballast hasn't been applied yet, but it still looks really good with these North Shore models on it. the Background is just up the road from where I live looking at the Bitterroot Mountains.

It's already gone through getting the coal extension boards on the tender, wood pilot, new 57 inch drivers and inside frame trailing truck with the Air Compressed 6 hopper Ashpan I had custom 3d printed and cast in brass at Precision Scale Co.

As of 12:25pm on March 28th 2024, this Brass Southern Railway Ms Class 2-8-2 Mikado has officially been completed.

It's time to pull a Southern Excursion train now!

I want to thank the Client for entrusting me to do this job for his collection. I also thank God that I was able to be patient on this model and not rush it and still get it done 2 weeks before the deadline.

Then it's off to run it so I can do the white on the tires of the drivers.

So here's what I have got done so far on this Southern Ms Class 2-8-2 Mikado boiler.

I've started the decals on the sand dome as it's by far the most difficult area to add double pin striping on it and it has to still fit the numbers on the dome too.

A huge learning curve compared to non-striping appearances.

Stay tuned for the next update of this model!

Good news! I replaced the worm gear with the correct one from Boo-Rim Precision for the 1/27th ratio gearbox and did her break in run and she's running smooth at her top speed of 44 scale mph.

I was running her in reverse and discovered that one of her detail parts on the front tender truck wasn't even attached properly causing it to short out.

Now that has been remedied, she is ready for film day Thursday!

Today was an absolutely amazing day to run trains on my friend's layout.

I managed to get this W-3 Mikado to run the whole layout without any issues the first try and was pulling a heavy 25 car freight train up the 2.2% grade over Mullan Pass.

Also, a photoshoot took place chasing 1756 up the mountain grade with a couple video shots as well.

My friend Robert Case also came by and picked up his NP W class 2-8-2 from PFM that was completely rewired, new headlight and backup light, new speaker and the tender trucks had to be completely repainted as the model wouldn't move more than half an inch before shorting out.

13/02/2024

Hey Everyone, Today I wanted to share the progress on this Southern Ms Class 2-8-2 Mikado.

This model is being painted and decaled as Southern 4501 back in the green double pin striped scheme she wore before her rebuild and installation of her Worthington SA Feedwater Heater.

As you can see, I've got the first five decals put together on the coal bunker area. Yes, you read that right. Five individual decals to make one single pin stripe pattern.

Now that I have my new workbench available for use, I no longer have to share the space in front of my paint booth for decaling, repairs, and disassembly of the models.

I've decided to go back and completely rewire this Mikado.

I didn't like how messy it was before, I also changed a few of the wires to be black so when they go to the tender they're not noticeable while operating and in my photos.

Well, I believe I got this tender the way I wanted it. I chose to be a lot lighter in the weathering as I wanted to show a well maintained appearance for my W-3, yet also a dirty appearance.

I'm also considering to add more streaks like the NP Class A tender that's also in the picture as it looks like a hard working locomotive pulling passenger and freight all day long.

I'll glue in real life coal in the coal bunker to the same 30 grit scale size as this W-3 has an automatic stoker like the 4-8-4s do.

Hey Everyone,

In today's post I'm working on weathering this tender using the same techniques from Juan Zuloaga, but instead of using oil paints from abteilung, I'm using water mixable oils from Winsor & Newton as it isn't as strong as other oil paints.

This is the second wash on it an it looks like nothing has changed. Why? It's due to me keeping the paint very thin, thinner than what I see people use when doing Tamiya washes as you can slowly adjust it to the way you want it to look without being over done.

Note that the trucks are heavier washes as they will collect more dirt and grime than the rest of the tender.

Hey Everyone,

Today I did some research and a friend of mine worked on a steam locomotive that has NP 2601s original whistle. It's amazing to find that it used a Nathan 6 Chime just like NKP 765 uses today.

So in this new discovery I had another friend make a sound file template for this model and the Berk that's in the works.

I'm glad that a relic of the NP 2601 is on the CC&C #15 in Chehalis, WA. I just wish it was running these days and I'd go down there to listen to this whistle in person.
