To Keto or Not to Keto … that is the question. Or at least it is a question that I get a lot as a Diabetes Provider. The pressure, guilt, and shame that comes with a carb when you have diabetes can be enough to make you … want to binge on carbs, right? Well let me help you take a deep breath, put down the knife (too many carb/bread puns?). The whole goal for every single person, and yes that includes those living with diabetes, is to find a healthy way to eat, that works for you, but that you can actually do … and do for your lifetime. So when I am in the exam room, working with a patient, and they say to me “I think I need to do keto” I always respond exactly the same way, every time. I just ask “do you like carbs?” If your answer is “yes” then you probably shouldn’t do keto. It is really hard to completely eliminate carbs from your diet indefinitely, especially when you enjoy eating them. You don’t need to feel bad about this … just remember, 1. Diabetes is a problem if insulin, not carbs. And 2. You just have to find a healthy way to eat that works for you. Check out AnchorWellhealth.com to learn more and yes before you ask … I have Type 1s and Type 2s successfully do keto, and and have many more who successfully find something else that works for them. DM is not a one size fits all, you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing, you just have to find a healthy way to eat that works for you.

Good morning… can you tell it’s Tuesday and it’s my only toddler free day? Well yes… I’m back but this time the coffee is black (no creamer), as black as my sweatshirt. The bagel is being saved for lunch, which is a super bummer bc it was warm out of the oven and very tempting) but I am back to my intermittent fasting routine. Intermittent fasting plus plant based eating is how I define healthy eating for myself. Finding what worked for me, discovering how I define healthy eating took time, trial and error - which is exactly as it should for everyone. Especially if you have diabetes and you are learning how your body and your blood sugar respond to different food. Having spent The last 20 years in healthcare working with thousands of patients… I can tell you very emphatically people are different. What they like to eat, how they like to eat it, how their blood sugar responds to food, what their schedule is… Surprise, healthy eating is anything but a one size fits all. This is why at AnchorWell we want to help you find your shade of gray and help you discover + define what healthy eating looks like for you. For me IF + plant-based eating works… Because it makes me feel GREAT! I have more energy, I wake up refreshed, I don’t dip in the afternoon, needing caffeine or sugar to avoid a crash, I feel nourished, I am eating real food, I can keep up with my kids, with my daily demands, I feel great while exercising, truly in every way, I feel BETTER. So for these reasons and many, many more – this combo is what healthy eating looks like to me. Why am I sharing this with you?… Because I would love to help you find what healthy eating looks like for you! More on this to come later - so stay tuned. And yes… before you ask - you can safely do intermittent fasting with diabetes (even type 1). Just work with your provider for monitoring of blood sugars, reducing insulin, adjusting meds - I have worked alongside my patients very successfully with IF. So cheers (with my black coffee) ☕️.

What a difference a week makes! Let’s just try that again… Last week I tried to start 2024 with a productive Tuesday (it’s my only toddler free day since my husband is home) and wouldn’t you know, after winter break and 3 kids and holidays and snuggling and presents and memories and hot cocoa days… I could not remember my password. Cue the black computer screen and the more than 45 minutes it took me to actually get started and the very frustrating start to the day … that I was not anticipating at all. Well today, one week and lots more snow and snow days and MLK day later, I am actually in! The coffee is hot, I upgraded the bagel, and the music and atmosphere make me feel like I am in my own romantic comedy. FYI… after having spent more than a decade working in diabetes, I find that most life lessons, growth, learning, insight into life - also applies to DM. You will 100% always have the days with DM where the computer screen is black and you are locked out. Especially in the beginning. We ALL have those days! But keep going, keep believing … there are better days ahead too. Here is to you and your better days with DM and with life … we are always rooting for you.

Monday Mindfulness … this is so true for so many things … weight loss. Mental health. Healthy eating. Exercise. Learning a new skill. Starting your own business. Diabetes…. Life! With diabetes it can be even harder too because everything and nothing impacts your blood sugar, and trying to learn your insulin needs, how your body responds to stress, sleep, illness, Monday morning commutes to work … is like trying to hit a constantly moving target. So 1. Remember this photo. 2. Work on expectation management. This is one of my solid, go-to, stress management life skills … expectation management! If we set ourselves up to fail, simply by expecting unrealistic things/goals/timing… then we cannot win - even before we take our first step! This is why we have a whole class in our Complete Courses on Expectation Management with Diabetes. We walk through the pitfalls of unrealistic expectations and help you set and manage realistic expectations with diabetes. Again this is all included as a part of our Complete Courses so that you learn to become the expert in your diabetes, you learn stress management, health promotion, and how to live better with diabetes. Visit www.anchorwellhealth.com to learn more!
