Happy 🧠

I hope you all can make some time to check in with yourselves today ❤️

Mental health struggles are real and you are so valid. I see you and I hear you, and I will spend every day of the rest of my life doing my part to help.

You matter. You deserve to take up space. You are not a burden. You are not too much.

I promise.

Love,

Dr. Katelyn

This Fat Barbie is a Doctor of Clinical Psychology!

When it comes to positive representation in the media, fat folks get the short end of the stick. We see fat people as the comedic relief, as the character battling with their weight, or even as villains (looking at you, Ursula).

What did this tell us as kids? What does it mean for someone to not see themselves represented in mainstream pop culture?

I’ll tell you what it means. It means fat people often grow up feeling the limitations of what they’ve been shown (or technically, not shown). It means the majority of us didn’t day dream about becoming doctors or lawyers or astronauts… We dreamed about being smaller so that *one day* we could maybe accomplish those things.

I’m encouraging all my fat comrades out there to share your daily lives. Share what you do for a living. Share your hobbies, your good moments, your failures, your accomplishments. Share it all, because little you deserved to see all the possibilities.

Representation matters.

On this self-care Sunday, remember that:

•Rest does not need to be earned 🙅🏻‍♀️
•Resting does not make you “lazy” 🚫(cannot stand that word)
•ALL bodies need rest. Literally all 💤
•If you’re worrying about resting while resting… you’re not really resting 👎🏼

I hope you are/were able to capture moments of rest this weekend, guilt free ❤️

Let’s talk about being fat in the summer.

It’s a conversation we’ve been having within the Collective but I wanted to share it with you, too!

It is getting HOT out there people, and large bodies and heat don’t go so well together.

I’ve have a few tips and tricks that really help get me through all the barbecues, parties, beach days, and whatever else summer throws my way and I can’t gatekeep them any longer!

1) I LIVE in this thing in the summer. It’s a heavy-duty 500lb capacity hammock swing and stand that lets me melt into it on warm sunny days for cozy naps. I never thought I would be able to experience being on a swing/hammock without worrying it will break underneath me. This is a GAME. CHANGER.

2) DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET A HIGH POWERED NECK FAN. I’m not kidding. I bring this thing with me EVERYWHERE to help stay cool. It’s changed the way I think about out-door activities entirely!

3) This one is far less known- a curved shower rod will change your life. Normal, straight rods tend to allow the curtain/liner to cling to you in the shower- a curved rod prevents any clinging, letting you take a nice cool-down shower without fighting the curtain off of you!

4) A mattress designed for bigger figures that has cooling technology to literally keep you cool all summer long!

5) One of my favorite tips is keeping a chair that comfortably seats you in your car. You’ll be prepared no matter the seating situation!

6) Wear what makes YOU comfortable and cool. Truly. Let the rolls out, let the belly sag, let the b***y see some sunlight. You deserve to be comfortable.

7) Find a deodorant that is long lasting that can go ANYWHERE. Also, prevent chub with chaffing sticks and moisture-wicking clothing.

That’s all I have for now!

Do you have any must-haves to share?! Let’s make a list and help our community stay cool this summer!

Let’s talk about fat comfort.

As most of you know, I started a new job recently and I LOVE IT (follow by the way!)

When I first walked in and checked out my office, my eyes went immediately where every fat person’s eyes go when they enter a room: the seating.

My office was SO freaking cute! BUT I was nervous about sitting on a desk chair way below my weight limit. I worried the therapy seating would break under me during a session.

Cue my immediate panic, worrying about how I might damage the property of my new employers and anxiety about not being comfortable in a space that I will spend lots of time in.

BUT, once I was able to think rationally about the situation and work up the courage, I did what I encourage you all to do with every post… I advocated for my needs and my right to take up space, instead of feeling guilt and shame.

Of course, my new employers are amazing and, once I raised my concerns, I was met with the simple reply of “sure, send us links of what you want!”

That’s all it took. Literally. Days and days of working up to it, fearing judgment, fearing an “it’s not in the budget” response, fearing I would feel “less than” and like I didn’t belong…

All of that time I spent worrying about it, talking about it with my partner, planning how to approach it, and literally all I had to do was state my needs.

So here is your reminder to speak up for yourself. Advocate for your body and what it needs. Take up space.

You deserve to be comfortable, babe. Always. ❤️

In case you weren’t aware…

“I’M IN LOVE, I’M IN LOVE, AND I DON’T CARE WHO KNOWS IT!”

Everyone, meet my soulmate 🥹

Today marks one year since I have had the privilege of loving this amazing woman and it’s about damn time I share her with the world (she is far too precious to not shine).

If you’re not down with the LGBTQIA+, kindly (actually, never mind, not kindly) exit stage right. I’m just getting started 😉

Happy Anniversary, bug ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

I started working at my first official big girl (pun intended) job yesterday!

If you had told 10 year old me she would one day be a psychologist, she wouldn’t have believed you. Neither would the 15, 20, or even 25 year versions of me.

Society tells fat people that they’re lazy, dumb, and worthless. I am a fat person who completed a doctorate telling you F**K. THAT. S**T.

You can do anything.

And you will.

I'm so excited to announce that I have joined the Collective for another year!

In case you don't know what that is, buckle up for some awesomeness:

The Big Fig Collective is a group of plus sized people from different backgrounds, such as actors, models, athletes, and content creators who get together to discuss issues the plus size community faces, different philanthropic opportunities, AND we test out Big Fig products so they can be sure everything they make is actually helping big figured people live better lives.

I am honored to be a part of the team and optimistic that this group can make a real difference.

Cheers to Year 2!

Let’s talk about clothes.

If you live in a larger body, chances are you’re aware of “the rules” when it comes to fashion.

•Don’t wear anything tight, try to match the potato aesthetic
•Don’t wear short sleeves or sleeveless tops, for some reason the skin on your arms is bothersome.
•Don’t wear horizontal stripes, god forbid they make you look *gasp* even bigger
•Don’t wear bright colors, they draw attention to the fact that you have a body. Only wear dark colors.

I could literally go on and on and on. I’ve heard all of these and so many more since I was SIX YEARS OLD.

Truth is, and listen (read) closely… Your body is still your body no matter what you wear. No clothing can change your body.

So I say f**k it. Why be miserable and resemble a garbage bag? If I am living in this body, I am going to celebrate it and decorate the s**t out of it.

Wear what you want. Be as bright and as bold as you want. Show as much skin as you want. Forget the rules babe, they’re so 1999. 💁🏻‍♀️

Did you know that s*xual wellness plays a significant role in overall mental wellness?

As someone who’s lived in a larger body my whole life, I’ve always felt ashamed to accept myself as a s*xual being. I took in the subliminal messaging from society- “fat people are gross and don’t have s*x, nor do they deserve to have s*x”.

It’s taken years for me to get that narrative out of my head. To quiet the voice telling me I was unworthy, disgusting, and unwanted.

Those thoughts can be consuming (like seriously, they took over for more than half my life) but it’s important to realize how much those thought patterns affect well-being.

Studies show time and time again just how important s*xual health is. Poor s*xual health is correlated with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, poorer quality of life, higher levels of stress, and sleep problems. So yeah, I’d say it’s pretty damn important!

I understand if you’re struggling with your s*xual self while living in a larger body, but I’m here to remind you that it’s important, you’re s*xy AF, and there most definitely ARE people who want to get freaky with you.

And if you’re worried about having a sturdy surface to improve your s*xual health, I highly recommend BigFig Mattresses (). I promise you won’t break it 😏
