From Another Zero
A safe space for artists to talk about their work and creation. Views, interviews and events.
Another thing I appreciated, was the closeness to the audience in some scenes with some of the characters, and, the cool side of that was that each actor handled it with their own personality whether it was joking with people in the first row or even adlibbing. 👗

Regarding the play itself, after the ghost’s appearance, the following 40 minutes made me very uncomfortable and not in a good way…💀

Devil in a Box was born as a short 10-minute play in 2019, and scaled to a full 60-ish minute story with no intermission that takes place in a church daycare illustrated to great detail by set designer Duane McGregor. 🧸

In my experience, rarely is a commissioned play really ready. Usually, there are gaps, loose ends, or plain things that do not make sense being shoehorned in.... 🍲

The cast is hot, hot, HOT! There is no weak link in this production as the casting is perfection, and Sean Murray’s direction has a strategic blockage that uses the entire house… ☄️

World premieres like anything new, seeing the light for the first time, need to marinate, get worked on, and soften the edges, especially with new songs. In the case of Calpurnia’, the songs flow and are catchy. 🔎

Material that makes us uncomfortable and/or makes us question things is good. It might not feel good at times, but that is different. 📖

It is fascinating how works pass the test of time and live on through different generations that give a new breath to each iteration. North Coast Repertory Theatre rose to the challenge of producing this 1664 classic that keeps on giving 360 years later. 🍗

The production is visually stunning. All the design elements are placed perfectly and I consider this piece to be part of the new era of theatre yet, the story needs to catch up. 🌳
