Recent Coromandel trip was epic. We got to the spot around 3am to catch live baits. But the weather condition was bit off the forecast. It was windy and choppy. No baits will come up on the burley trail. But an hour before sunrise, squids were on caught 6 squids(1 of them was a 1kg+model) and 2 jack mackerels. It all happened in half an hour.
My first choice of live bait was squid. Once I got my livie out, I started stickbaiting. No sign of fish until bit later in the morning. Squid got smashed by this 20kg+ kingi(since my scale only goes up to 18kg, so not sure about exact weight of it but it was well over the max digit).
There were 3 others behind the one I was fighting, so I quickly landed it and chucked another squid out. Hoping to get another one hooked up for my friend. Not long after my friends livie gets interests from the kingi but then it turns its head around to go for my squid. I had it on for a moment then my main line broke before hading over my rod to my friend. When I was fighting the first one, line was scuffed around and I was in hurried to put another bait out so I didn't trim out the damaged line. Learned the lesson the hard way. Any way we had 2 more chances but it didn't get connected.
It was around 6pm when we got back to Auckland. We've shared the fish between two of us. No meat was wasted.
