From surgeon to a psychiatrist, a road less traveled, but it has convinced me of the value of merging knowledge from these two specialties.

❗️ Surgical psychology is a neglected field with huge potential to improve outcomes. Looking back on this short interview in 2016, I still have the same 'battle call' to my colleagues as well as to future surgeons and doctors: We must arm ourselves with the latest scientific knowledge to improve our performance.

This award-winning, peer-reviewed book reveals how surgeons can sharpen the skill of decision-making. Presented here are the findings from decision science that surgeons – irrespective of specialty or seniority – can apply to everyday practice. Surgeons are required to adapt new strategies throughout their careers. Ideas taken from this book will help to speed up the learning curve.
I hope this book helps you as much as it helped me writing it 10 years ago!

A good-quality surgery is said to have two key elements: Safe judgement and good technical skills. The first book I wrote was all about the first part: the judgement.

Judgements of this type have several features that differentiate them from analytical thinking. Surgeons need to discuss what 'safe judgement' actually means in order to improve surgical outcomes.

A career in surgery carries with it serious challenges: surgical training is rigorous, both emotionally and physically. With a background in both surgery and psychological medicine, I started to examine the psychosocial burden of being a surgeon and offer insights into the role of intra-human factors in surgery. My book "Surgeon, Heal Thyself" offers solutions to rectify the problem and hopefully prevent burnout.

Thank you for following me on this journey of ‘Surgical Psychology’.

The aim of surgical psychology is to improve surgical outcomes and a surgeon’s wellbeing by applying psychological methods.
I am qualified as both a surgeon and psychiatrist, and with this rare dual experience I have been coaching surgeons for over a decade on a range of issues. Countless surgeons have benefitted from my coaching input and I look forward to supporting many more.
So far, I have written 3 books to share my knowledge of the profound impact a surgeon’s psychology has on clinical outcomes. All are available at Amazon and Goodreads.
