My first job was at Walmart.
They had several positions open. I didn't want to be a cashier, because all they do is stand in one spot and check people out all day.
They asked me what area of the floor I wanted to work on. I chose domestics (bed + kitchen+ bath). I always did love all things household decor + comfort.
When they needed help covering other departments, the only ones I was willing to do were housewares (appliances + furniture) and hardware (paint, etc) because those were the things IIIIII was interested in. That's what I got excited about. I excelled in those areas.
Walmart always been Walmarting, so occasionally they would ask for people on the floor to go upfront and cashier because they failed to schedule enough people. I always declined, because that's not what I wanted to do+ I don't take on extra work that isn't beneficial to me for free.
So one day, they went around telling everyone that EVERYBODY had to cross-train to cashier. I declined still and told them I will learn it when they agree to pay me for both jobs whenever they needed me for both. Needless to say, I did not learn to use the register at that time.
I learned from my manager more about how to run the departments that IIII was interested in.
Then I decided I wanted to switch to night shift because it suited me better (quieter + less distractions + way less people) and paid better. But my manager wouldn't do the transfer because I was too good in my department and she didn't wanna lose me. LOL.
I told her I would start doing the bare minimum until she let me go. Because naw. Lol. And I did.
But what I also did was volunteer to work special projects when the opportunities arose, because they were always overnight. So I made overtime while learning everything I could and giving my best effort to that. Until I was allowed to transfer. ☺️
I eventually learned to run the register, but only because I switched to that position, and that is the only thing I did.
Walmart was giving $.10 - $.25 raises per year. Lol.
I was at Walmart for almost three years, and when I left, was making $3/hr MORE than when I started. I was making the same thing some people were making who had been there way longer than me and was doing all the things.
What I'm telling you is this:
🗣️ Go for what YOU want. Make things work FOR YOU. Don't spend all your energy and life force doing everything to benefit everyone else while you're groaning and cringing and dying inside. SOMETIMES, you may have to. But keep that to a minimum and exit ass soon as possible.
Don't over give and underreceive. Don't let people who aren't bold enough to get what they require tell YOU that you have to jump through hoops or "pay dues" that THEY had to pay because THEY don't know how to get what THEY want.
Do what brings you joy. Get the most out of every situation. Have a goal with anything you do, even and ESPECIALLY if it's not necessarily something you wanna do. Figure out a way for your right now thing to be beneficial to your next thing. Even if you end up changing your mind later about what your next thing is.
You didn't lose anything, because it still served a purpose - YOUR purpose - at the time.
And finally, as long as you do the work - the work that gets you to YOUR goal- your "worth" is whatever you say it is.
P.S. - I was 18.5. You can do this. Go for it.
