With support from a Literacy grant from Coastal Family Resource Coalition, Nuučiiaqsa Connie Manuel had a plan to cook using a pit cook, which is a traditional cooking method on the beach with the cultural food students at Maaqtusiis Secondary. Nuučiiaqsa gathered information from Richard Atleo of what was needed for a pit cook in order to prepare.
Leading up to the event, the students gathered y̓am̓amapt -salal, and on another day, they gathered the muksy̓ii -rocks for the fire.
A fire ban was just put in place just before the scheduled event. Another hurdle was the Highway four road closure due to the Cameron Lake wild-fire - the Ahousaht chief and council shut down school when the pitcook was supposed to happen. Nuučiiaqsa had all the food and needed to do something with it. She went online and on VHF radio to reach out to students to ask them to come help with cooking and delivering the food even though school was out. They would have to adapt and cook the food in a kitchen instead of a pit cook and deliver it to elders.
A teaching Nuučiiaqsa shared is to always look after and feed the elders. Various community members came out to help. Student Emily Sabbas, was able to help out with cooking and delivering. She could feel the happiness of the elders when the food was shared. It was a pure seafood delivery . hasaamac, ḥay̓ištup, spot prawns, suḥaa, qʷakmis, c̓aʔinwa ʔuḥʔiiš ƛ̓učum!
