You can't go very far without almost falling into one - there are literally hot bubbling pools of water everywhere you look. One week until the end of summer! Known for its cherry blossoms in spring and year-round natural beauty, Yamagata is just a few hours north of Tokyo and shouldn't be missed in autumn either! The city of Yamagata is sizable enough located between Sendai and Niigata, but the real highlight are the mineral-rich hot springs - with one of the oldest in Japan, Zao Onsen. The water here has a soft feel and is quite acidic (one of the highest in the country), and the smell of sulphur frequently rolls through the main city area. If you're brave enough, your body will thank you afterwards (and then take a shower)!

Beppu is full of onsens open to the public - hundreds of them, in fact! You would be hard-pressed to visit them all in one trip. All of them have one thing in common - you should be prepared to share them with others (hence them being 'open to the public'). However, if you're looking for a more private experience, book a room at Mimatsu Oetei situated perfectly to give you this beautiful view of Beppu Bay. Just a short walk from Beppu train station, I will definitely be trying this out for myself on my next trip! ♨️😌♨️
