4️⃣ Week Four was spent deep in the trenches of writing! We started our opinion writing from our reading of Claudette Colvin and Ruby Bridges, two monumental figures in the civil rights movement as children. While their lives have been used as inspiration for others and has paved ways for our children today, it can be argued whether children have a place in such groundbreaking work of changing society.

💡Here’s what our scholars are learning, opinions are everywhere but it isn’t a fact. Yet, we can support our opinions through sound reasons from texts, our knowledge, and our experiences. We just have to make it make sense.

📝Writing can be complex, especially in a structured sense. Through the use of graphic organizers for planning and a checklist/rubric to guide focus, it helps provide the structure needed.

(The scholar who is responding no had a change of heart, but she was encouraged to continue in that argument as a counterpoint. It’s all about building well-rounded perspectives.)

3️⃣ Week Three of our Reading Bootcamp is a wrap. Today was a stamina building day 💪🏽🧠 as the scholars were engaged in a lengthier passage detailing the trailblazing work of Guion Bluford, the first Black astronaut of NASA. 🧑🏾‍🚀

✨ We used GIST to help summarize sections of the passage and determine the main ideas of each section. Then we collaborated to create a one sentence summary to highlight each passage.

💡Most of the time, long passages are a turn off, and if your child doesn’t like to read, it’s automatic shut down. Chunk the text! Meaning, break it up into sections to make it digestible, and ask questions along the way to increase engagement and comprehension.

Three weeks down, only three more to go. These brilliant scholars are making and strengthening connections to take with them to their homes and schools.

2️⃣ Week 2 of our Reading Bootcamp was FULL of discussion as we engaged with the text of “The Challenge Game.”

🔍 Our focus for this week was character traits. As we explored all the things that makes us the unique individual we are, we created a word cloud. ☁️

✨We were able to think about the things we like, the things we say, and the things we do to narrow down our descriptions. And as we followed the main character of today’s story, we identified and analyzed what the character thought, said, and did.

🕳️ Using the TWA strategy requires the reader to dig deep and make meaning of the character’s thoughts, words, and actions (inferencing). As you read with your child, encourage them to explore these aspects of the character, and enjoy the conversation and connections your child makes! 💥

Evidence of a successful day is found when the scholars are not ready to leave and go home on a SATURDAY! 😳

Today was the kick off of our Winter Reading Bootcamp. 🎉We spent the morning analyzing the story “As Good As You” to gather information to summarize the text and find the central message. 🔍

We used the “Somebody Wanted But So Then” strategy to gather most important details. We also made BME (beginning, middle, and end) burgers to compile our details. 🍔
