Today is a victory for public health in the state of Louisiana and for all of those people, from our health care heroes, including our doctors, nurses and other medical professionals to our scientists and researchers, who are fighting every day to slow the spread of COVID and save lives here.

What today’s hearing means for the people and businesses of Louisiana is that our state remains in Phase 3, including with a statewide mask mandate in effect, based on my most recent proclamation.

Right now, we are seeing frightening surges in COVID cases, test positivity, hospitalizations and deaths around the country, including in our neighboring states. Louisianans must not let down their guards. We will get through this together, and I am deeply thankful for the hard work of all Louisianans, who have already bent the curve twice this year.

Just wear a mask. How hard is it?

Mayor-President Josh Guillory has proclaimed the week of November 8 - November 14 as “Nurse Practitioner Week”. Pictured is Carla Vidrine, who serves as the regional representative for the Lafayette Region of the Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners (LANP).

Nurse practitioners (NPs) serve as trusted health care providers for patients in our state and in this year, 2020, we celebrate the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. NPs provide high-quality primary, acute and specialty care services while focusing on health promotion, disease prevention, health education and counseling, guiding patients to make smarter health and lifestyle choices every day.

There are more than 290,000 licensed NPs in the United States, and 6,912 in Louisiana. NPs are working tirelessly to diagnose and treat patients with COVID-19 and to combat community spread nationwide, while grieving NP colleagues who have lost their lives during the pandemic.
