iām so happy i can finally share this very special ! months ago, my friends who iām honored to do ministry with at asked me to create a piece for their adoption of a little girl from haiti. this was the 1st time iāve created a piece of someone who exists but who iāve never met. i loved the challenge, & it was such a beautiful honor to stand in faith with my friends in this way. eden, you are already so loved & celebrated. iām so excited to meet you. // learn more about the shawsā adoption story & how you can support them at the link in their bios.

HAPPY LOVING DAY!!!! š„³ today we celebrate the game-changing LOVING DAY, the anniversary of a historic court decision for in*******al marriage š swipe for some quotes from a really great thought-provoking article from USA Today called āLoving Day: A look atā£
in*******al marriage 54 years after Supreme Court decisionā (iāll link it in my bio).ā£
ā£
54 years ago on this day, an in*******al couple of a white man & a black woman of african american / native american descent named richard & mildred loving fought & WON against the laws confining them & everyone else from marrying in*******ally.ā£ā£ā£
ā£ā£ā£
on june 12, 1967 the supreme court made a unanimous 9-0 decision in favor of striking down anti-miscegenation laws in more than 20 states that made marriage between different races a crime. the decision was sparked by Loving v. Virginia, richard & mildredās court case. the 2 of them married in washington in 1958.Ā after returning to their home in virginia, the couple was jolted outta bed in the middle of the night by police & arrested, not knowing their marriage was illegal there. the lovings were sentenced to 1 year in prison, unless they left virginia & didnāt come back together for at least 25 years.ā£ā£ā£
ā£ā£ā£
5 years of living in exile later ~ inspired by the civil rights movement, mildred wrote a letter to an attorney general, asking for counsel. she was referred to the american civil liberties union, where their case eventually went to the supreme court. the lovingsā convictions were overturned in the courtās unanimous decision, ruling that the ban on in*******al marriage was unconstitutional & in violation of the 14th amendment. at the time, in*******al marriage was forbidden in 16 statesā¦ so the ruling was necessary. & despite the ruling making anti-miscegenation laws unenforceable, those laws still remained in several states for some time. for example, alabama continued to enforce those laws until 1970 & was the last state to adapt its laws to the supreme courtās decision, only finally doing so in 2000.ā£ā£ā£
ā£ā£ā£
very thankful for richard & mildredās determination. šŖš¾ it helped shape the future of so many beautiful relationships in our country. š
this month, honor your own feelings. honor your own capacity ~ even if others donāt. you donāt need anyone else to validate for you the way you feel & the capacity you do or do not have. sometimes taking care of you means saying no to others, & thatās okay. june is your month.
new Honor Your Feelings print for when you need a reminder at your desk or in your home.
pschh, no i do not wish i had a pet cheetah.. no idea what youāre talkin about š Asiyami print is the newest art in the shop!

just because we have seen some change in 1 year doesnāt mean we can take a break on anti-racism efforts. i hope the anniversary of george floydās death today didnāt just bring you to a ālook how far weāve comeā pat on societyās back (which can be pretty minimizing of black experiences) after what was for some a short-lived awakening, only to ignore the not-as-feel-good-y reality of how far we still have to go. may we truly honor george floyd by continuing to educate ourselves, continuing to stand up for justice (whether any black friends are around to see it or not), & never giving up even when we get pushback or because āthatās just the way they are.ā there are black lives at stake. ššš¾
been a busy week & havenāt had much time to doodle lately, but finished my new Zera print last month & forgot to post it. excited for more bright prints for this summer! this is my favorite one so far.

iāve been looking at the 10 names of the victims of mondayās shooting at a king soopers too close to home in boulder, colorado, & reading some of the things their loved ones are saying about them, & my heart is broken for these people as i cry for them. i donāt even know what to say here to honor them well. š while itās disheartening posting about another mass shooting not even a week apart from the last one, i know art speaks. with both these recent tragedies, iāve felt such a desire to use my art for something to help. so in light of the 10 victims of the boulder shooting, 10% of all sales of my new āBoulder STRONGā tee will be donated to the Colorado Healing Fund, a non-profit created to support victims of mass tragedies. you can find it at the link in my profile (swipe for the mock ups & a close up of the design). keeping in prayer the families & loved ones of the 10 victims whose lives were lost in this shooting:ā£

so heartbreaking that earlier this week, asian-owned businesses in atlanta were targeted in a hate crime that left 6 asian women dead. iām mourning with the asian community, checking myself on any microagressions iāve allowed, & am so fed up with racism still being a reality in our world today. {& donāt even get me started on the fact that the gunman was arrested UNHARMED, just like tons of white male suspects (mass shooters & capitol rioters, to name a couple), but black men & women (george floyd, breonna taylor, daniel prude, to name a few) who are suspected of doing far less than murder, or even nothing at all, very disproportionately end in death.}
while my hope is in Jesus, i still feel the very real awfulness & effects of racism, & i recognize that many in the AAPI have unfairly been the focus of a lot of hate since covid started. so this is a small way to amplify their voices & spread some love to my friends in the asian community. you arenāt alone, & i support you! š
