Being part of any marginalized community means staying aware of all the false stereotypes people hold for your community, all the dangerous stereotypes that could lead to you getting harassed or assaulted or worse.
So you spend a considerable amount of your time avoiding actions that may lead to people associating you with those stereotypes based on biases they already hold. And you hope you're making a positive change in people's mindset.
But then you realize that you didn't break those stereotypes they have in their mind for your community but you only broke them for you as an individual. And that your oppressors see you merely as an exception while having the audacity to mock and spread hate speech against your ilk, your community right in front of you because they see you as "one of the good ones" and you begin to realize you'd rather be vilified by them than accept their tainted mockery of "tolerance".
