Getting into Kayaks
Three by three

An older lady with bright red hair
Who feels as silly as them with embarrassed joy
Claims the birthday boy
With photos from the path

Every year she says, when asked
He does this, they go somewhere in this state, to celebrate
All his mates
Together for the day

Her son is tall
In furry cape, velvet trousers, festooned shoes, sunglasses on
Under a jaunty crown
His grin, as lopsided, as the rest of him

Turns to mum’s call, ‘Smile’
From paddling behind a soul diva with an absurdly large hat
Taking time to look back
So the phone can hold, another year - passing, laughing

OUR GARDEN

The common ground we have is,
This
Carbon, friend
That’s what we share
Soil and petals, bones and hair
We each need,
Brother sister neighbour star
This planting season
To begin, again

So show care
Sow care,
Coax the roots out, with your gentlest finger
Tend to yourself and
Me, and everyone
Under the warm sun
Though we can’t know
We have to trust our roots and
Grow, anyway

Leave the mulch in our heads
Rise from our (flower) beds
Be kind, be alive.
We may be small
But we have our part in it all,
A garden that is world-wide
Leaf to leaf, side by side
Each, new, day
One gorgeous display.
