We all want to feel safe, loved and accepted.

Thats all our dogs want too ..

Ok that’s a bit of a simplistic statement, they want cheese and sausage too…

It’s easy to use the cheese and sausage in order to get the behaviour you want to see in your dog.

It’s called ‘training behaviour’ and it goes something like this …

Dog does ‘something’ and gets a ‘treat’

Dog likes it and will do it again and gets another treat..

It’s not rocket science.

So how come so many people don’t get it?

The dogs preferences and personality are not taken into consideration (remember I mentioned feeling ‘safe’).

Knowing when your dog is in the learning zone is crucial.

In Dog School for Humans®️ we take you through the steps to help you and your dog get to the simple bit of ‘behaviour and reward’

It’s the step which is often missed out.

It’s why what you have tried before hasn’t worked.

You’re not stupid, neither is your dog.

Just missed a step out that’s all.

Join us in Dog School for Humans®️ and get your training back on track 🐾

We all just want to feel safe and loved.

‘But you’re a dog trainer, how can you have a reactive dog?’

These are words I hear frequently (like every single day).

I have 3 dogs, one of them is reactive (Ted).

I have 25 years experience, a BSc (Hons) in brain and behaviour, a f**kton of training certificates and yes, I have a reactive dog.

The outside world is scary for him and people judge us both, they judge hard and they judge unfairly.

Even when the words are not spoken, the looks people give says it all
and none of those looks have any compassion for a dog who is terrified and desperately trying to make sense of the world.

Thing with having a reactive dog (especially if they are a medium/ large breed) is…

Your world gets smaller.

You can no longer do anything on a whim.

You can no longer go on group walks.

People stop coming to your house.

You have to constantly plan ahead.

You get judged.

It can be incredibly isolating (and the shame and guilt owners feel is huge).

I seek out places where he can go that are quiet,
he’s never let off the lead in public places (that would be highly irresponsible of me), but he does get regular off lead exercise in private secure fields.

Everything has to go at his pace.

He’s terrified of other dogs (yes, even though he lives with two others).

New places freak him out.

‘Forcing’ him to do things, would destroy every fibre in my being and destroy all his trust with me (and his trust in me is everything).

I’d rather Ted trusted me to get him out of situations….and we have a relationship where:-

I can ‘read’ him,

I know his ‘signs’

I know when he needs my help

He knows I’ll get him out of situations that are too much for him.

I know when I say ‘no, that’s too much for Ted’ I get judged too.

My boy trusts me and I am here as a guardian for my reactive boy.

Life with Ted is fantastic, he is sweetest, loving, funny, gentle, intelligent and amazing dog.

We just get to do things a bit differently.
Free training coming next week in dailydogpost if you want to better your understanding of dogs, their language and how to support them better. Link in the linktree in the bio

Let’s talk about words
(If you’ve subscribed to my email you will be hearing more about this really soon).

Changing the way you speak about things really does change your outlook.

Changing your outlook, changes the way you behave around others and others behave around you.

Then magical stuff starts to happen (that’s for another post though)

Simply changing the word ‘got’ to ‘get’ can (and does) make a huge difference to your life.

Here’s some examples

‘I’ve got to pick up the dog s**t and there’s tones of it and I hate it when my finger goes through the dog poo bag’ (that last bit is a bit of a s**tter, pun totally intended)

Or

‘I’ve got to take the reactive wa**er I call a dog out and get dragged down the street while he acts as a cross between tigger on crack, a 35kg kite and the Tasmanian devil all rolled into one, it’s not fun for either of us and I’m sick and tired of feeling like a failure’

Change the ‘got’ word to ‘get’ and it becomes a different story.

‘I get to pick up the dog poo (I call it dismantling poo henge) because I have a dog that I love and I’m a responsible owner, it doesn’t take long and it’s a small s**t bit for a whole lot a love’

Or

‘I get to take my dog out everyday, I’m healthy enough to do it and him being reactive means he’s alive and responding, also I get to learn more about how to help him and expand my knowledge about dog behaviour in general ’

The thing is, if our kitchen appliances are broke, we get the relevant and appropriate people out to fix them, they are experts in their field.

Yet with dog issues and human mindset we just put up with it and think ‘that’s just the way it is’

But it doesn’t have to be this way,

for either of you!

Change the word ‘got’ to ‘get’ today, just one day! And see how much better you feel.

Just one tiny thing

All tiny things like this are available for you to discover in the membership.

I was knitting and I missed one stitch in my pattern…

I continued kitting, but something wasn’t quite right 🤨

It was no longer in a sequence

Even though I was still doing the action of knitting, it was all going a bit s**t 🙄

A bit like dog training sometimes…..

If we miss out a bit, (often without realising)

Just one tiny step…

It can all go a bit s**t 🙁

We keep doing the same thing and expecting different results

It’s not going to work and we know it….

But we don’t know what else to do 🤷🏼‍♀️

So we keep doing the same thing…

At least we’re doing ‘something’… right?

It’s crazy🤯

It’s infuriating 🤬

It’s exhausting!....I mean like totally exhausting….🙄

Life is precious…

And far too short for you to be keeping things ‘for best’.

I had a really nice candle once…

It was (what I considered) expensive

It was far too good, to burn at ‘just anytime’ so I kept it for a ‘special’ time.

Except I didn’t find a time ‘worthy’ of burning an expensive candle…

That candle ended up at the back of a cupboard and loosing its scent

I hadn’t ‘received’ the gift of the candle with the intention that it was given.

It had been gifted to me for me to enjoy, not to stash

It had been gifted because the ‘giver’, thought I would love it (and I loved it soo much)

But…. I didn’t think I was ‘worthy’ of such an amazing gift.

Unintentionally, I ‘rejected’ that gift, because of my self worth.

I didn’t feel good enough to have a candle like that and just burn it.

About 10 years later, the candle ended up in a charity shop, it had lost its scent.

I’d been given a gift of something I totally loved and really wanted …
And I ultimately gave it away because deep down, I didn’t think I ‘deserved’ it 😕

It took a lot of inner work and some uncomfortable truths, to find that actually I did deserve the candle.

It was gifted to me from someone with love.

And that was a whole other problem…. Love and the ‘deserving’ of it

Thing is, the sooner we realise that we fully deserve our place on this earth, we are not broken, we don’t need ‘fixing’ (some guidance and compassion totally helps)
we are lovable (yes that does include you 🫵) and until we love ourselves we will never beable to fully accept love from others…

Now?…

Candles are compassion for me, I buy them, I burn them, I appreciate them and I love em.

(And yes, I am totally worthy and deserving of good candles and so much more 😘)

🕯️🥰🕯️🥰🕯️🥰

when I’m not burning candles and drinking coffee, I’m training dogs and teaching humans how they can change their mindset, quit self sabotaging, get out of their own way and go for what they really want in life.

Mindset 101- the game changer sessions.
DM me for details 😘

I really wish you could see yourself the way your dog sees you…

They don’t see the wrinkles & the wobbly bits (makes better for a cosy cuddle, right!).

They don’t care if you’ve brushed your hair today, or even if you’ve got any!

They don’t care that that you can’t fit into a size (whatever) anymore …

They don’t care about what you ‘used to’ beable to do.

They don’t see ‘imperfections’

In their eyes you are everything..

Exactly as you are now!

Take time out to breathe and be present today…

it really is a beautiful gift..

That’s why it’s called ‘the present’.

Oh and spend some time with your dog, they give us so much and ask for so little in return 😘

Calling all dog owners !

The day you picked your dog up, you not only became his owner, you became his guardian, his trainer and his world.

I hear so many people (and believe me when I say they’re in my in box every single day), asking what’s the best harness?, what’s the best lead?, what’s the best toy? Etc

The thing is, none of this s**t matters if you’re not willing to train your dog.

Harnesses, collars and leads don’t train your dog.

You do!

Your dog does not ‘know better’

They don’t understand the ‘rules’ of your household

They don’t come with a built in training program that automatically gets activated.

They are highly sensitive, feeling, intelligent animals and they learn by association.

In order for them to learn the right way, YOU must beable to communicate with them in a way that THEY understand.

Once YOU learn this, you know it for life.

You get to train the dog that’s infront of you.

You get to adapt the communication to any other dog, just as you change the style of your language when talking to a child as opposed to a work colleague (or maybe not 🤣).

Yes there is free training in my free group, but that doesn’t scratch the surface of what we do inside the membership.

But I’ll tell you one thing for sure, if you keep on doing what you’ve always been doing and it’s just not working, is doing the same thing again going to change anything?

Nope

For less than the price of a new collar and lead you can get a month in dog school.

That will really make a difference to you and your dog, for LIFE.

(Subscription model, you can cancel at any time, no pressure. Link in the comments section).
Or sign up for for a whole year and only pay for 10 months 🤩

See you in there ❤️ (link in the comments)

I’m tired of hearing the guilt and shame put on dogs owners.

Especially those who have a ‘big dog’ (boxers are classed as medium sized dogs).

The pressure to have our dogs perfectly behaving with other dogs.

The pressure we put on ourselves for not ‘doing more’ for our dogs

The expectation from others to make our dogs ‘fit’ into a training/behaviour program that simply doesn’t match our dog’s personality.

The lack of understanding our dogs emotional concepts.

We want our dogs to be happy,

to feel confident & calm,

to understand what we are asking them to do

and above all else to feel safe and loved, knowing we’ve got them.

We’ve got their backs (their fronts and their arseholes)

To cocoon them with a safety buffer

Give them a signal they can use when they don’t feel comfortable

Show them they can let us know when they aren’t comfortable and we will help them.

Giving them the gift of us listening and understand them, so we can communicate on a level they understand.

This is what we do in Dog School for Humans membership.

Discover how to train your dog in a way they understand

Discover how you can feel more confident and how that helps your dog

Discover why your dog does what he does (and a solution to all the f**kery)

Discover a way of training that feels easy

Your dog will thank you for it

Training dogs usually involves treats…
Lots of em!

Especially when training a new thing.

To mark and reward- a verbal cue (such as ‘yes’ or ‘good’) is said to let the dog know the moment they have performed the required action correctly (done as they’re told 😂) followed by a reward (treat).

Simples!

But!!!

It can get messy, in so many ways and I ain’t just talking about cheesy fingers and hot dog smelling hands (reminds me of a cd my son had as a teenager 😂)

Timing is critical, crucial and very important🤓

‘Mark’ (yes/good) THEN you have 3 seconds for that treat to hit the dogs gob.

Anything more than 3 seconds and your dog doesn’t recognise what they are being rewarded for and you could be rewarding a completely different behaviour to the one intended. I.e you marked a ‘sit’ but your dog stood up while getting the ‘reward’ in dogs head = standing gets treats

= no learning has taken place

= you left scratching your head and wondering why your dog is just not getting it

= you blaming the dog for being thick as pig s**t

Not fair!

Get your mark in, then reward.
Repeat and repeat and repeat.

Also dogs don’t recognise the size of a treat, but they know the quantity.

Keep treats as small as you can get away with so you can reward ‘more’, (in your dogs eyes…obviously put the treats in their mouth and not in their eyes as that would just be dumb, de, dumb, dumb 🙄)

Boxer, lab, rottie etc size.. I go with these (pic below).

I get 43 treats out of one hot dog🌭

That’s 43 times I can practice a new behaviour with a dog.

If your dog is half that size, half the size of the treats.
If a quarter of the size, a quarter of the size of these treats.

Keep training sessions short and do them frequently.

43 treats= 4 mini training sessions using 10 treats at a time and 3 treats for me for cutting them up, Bingo!😂

Don’t forget to remove the fo****in off the sausages before you chop them 😉 (and no I don’t feed my dogs 50p pieces 🙄)

A few years ago I had a ‘difficult dog’,

I knew my s**t when it came to training dogs (especially boxers).

But I also had life happening to me and as a result of certain (non dog) related things, I lost my confidence.

This made a huge impact on my mindset and belief.

It made a massive impact on me training me dog.

It was crazy as I knew about mindset and I knew about training and I knew what was happening.

Yet I couldn’t seem to stop myself getting swallowed up by the feeling of ‘I’m failing my dog’.

There was nobody I could talk to about it, I didn’t even know anyone personally who had a boxer, it didn’t help that people looked at me funny when I said I had boxers.

It was a lonely place.

I truly wish I’d had somewhere like dog school for humans then.

This is why I created it.

This is you discover mindset support for you as well as training for your dog.

It really is the place your dog would sign you up to ❤️

Tip of the day.

If your dog ever has an ear infection.

Add hot water to their kibble and allow it to cool until the kibble goes soft.

Sometimes your dog is off their food, not because they’re not hungry, but the ‘crunch’ of the kibble hurts their ears.

Also in hot weather, cut back in their food a little bit, they’re often not as active and their digestion slows down a bit.

That’s two tips and your welcome ❤️❤️

Bespoke dog training ?
Is it even a thing?

Absolutely!

This is made for you and tailored to your needs.

It’ a fantastic opportunity to train your dog with the life skills needed to beable to turn to you for guidence and instruction.

This training actually works and thousands (yes thousands) of people who have trained with me now have a happier life with their dogs because of this training

And it’s really easy!

But…

There’s only one place left and it starts this Tuesday

Dog training classes!

6 week course

Starting Tues 20th June (Hartlepool)

This incredible course is jam packed with the tools and training to help your dog be less reactive, help with impulse control, aid loose lead walking and so much more

All training done positively and complies with the IMDT code of ethics.

Discover how to train in a way that your dog understands and is so rewarding for them they want to do it again and again and again.

We don’t call it ‘obedience’ we call it ‘good mannered’

We allow our dogs to display their personality and have fun learning the things we want them to do.

We go at your dogs pace (just like children, they learn at different paces)

Once you know this stuff, you know it for life.

This is an investment in you and your dog, because we don’t get as much time with them as we want to and we want the best for them right?!

I’m here to help you make the most of that time with a happier you and a happier dog.

Yes I could lower my prices and easily fit 8 people in the class, but that’s not what I’m about. (And you wouldn’t get the individual training)

I’m here for the owner, I thrive doing 121 work and this is an extension of that (hence the small class) where you get my expertise and lots of individual attention yet in a group setting.

Only 4 spaces in total- so you get the space and attention you and your dog needs.
(1 dog per place)

It’s not your average training.

I am not your average trainer.

One day or day one…
That choice is yours ❤️

My videos aren’t always this slick…😂

Sometimes I have nice places to film

Sometimes I put ’my ‘uniform’ on (dog training clothes).

Sometimes I brush my hair

Sometimes I wipe the dogs eye bogies from their face.

And I would have done all of this on Tuesday, when I had a nice place to film, but Ted decided to eat a bee and get an emergency trip to the vet and I wasn’t leaving him to go and do a video.

Today i canny be arsed.

Still in the clothes from the gym (no I didn’t break into a sweat I was there for physio on my knees)

Training in sandals 😬 full view of washing lines, no treat bag, no make up, no hair brushed, no f***s given

This is how I roll,

I am real.

My dogs are real (and Efi just couldn’t be arsed today)

Do I scrap it because it’s not perfect?

Do I fluck!

I keep it because it’s not perfect.

I’m not perfect.

My dogs aren’t perfect.

The membership is full of ‘real’ stuff

Real people, real dogs, real life.

No take two, three or four.

No camera person, right lighting, get me at the best angle.

I leave in all the s**t bits and bloopers (yes the members get a free comedy show 🙄)

But this real and raw stuff works, as the people in there are absolutely smashing it with dog training and I utterly adore each and everyone of them. (Soooo proud 🥹 )

Designed for busy people and those who can’t really be arsed.

Let’s talk walking the dog (or daily drag)
Your dog has waited all day for this walk.
He’s put up with your s**t ALL day (and all your weird rules)
He’s told what to do, where to sleep, what he can and can’t play with, when he gets fed (doesn’t even get a choice in what he fancies to eat, same s**t everyday 🙄), when to play, don’t play, be quiet, lie down, get off that…..
The list goes on …

Then comes the walk! (Or daily drag)
Your dog is excited (toot toot! 🎉 )

You brace yourself to walk the 35kg Tasmanian devil x kite x squirrel, hybrid that you call your dog
(And he pulls like a train 🚂 )

Why?……
Dogs have 4 legs, we have 2

Dogs are tethered to us, often on a very short lead.

Dogs are communicating all the time, but we ain’t listening… they pull

Not because they are naughty

Quite often we have trained them to pull without us realising.

They neeeeeed to sniff things, it’s their way of getting information, enrichment and let’s face it we ask a lot of our dogs.

Even when they are out!

They need to explore the outdoors and all it’s potential and freedom (on a lead) they pull, ‘over here quick, old Bob the wolfhound just left a message (peemail) up that lamppost, I needs to see what it says…

Or ‘the park!, the park!, I knows my way! Hurry up human!’

They pull…

We say ‘heel!’ As we are yanking the dog back to our side.
In our head we know what ‘heel’ means, but the dog has made the association with the word ‘heel’ being said at the same time as pressure being applied to the neck.
Repeat this several times during the walk, everyday and guess what…
You’ve successfully taught your dog to pull when you say heel. (Go you 👍😃)

But…

you start getting getting frustrated.

As far as you’re concerned your dog is being a dick dog and should know better.
When in reality ‘dick dog’ has done exactly what you taught him…
Not quite what you had in mind?

Join Dog School for Humans to find out how to undo the learning and start re learning with loose lead walking.
Remember this is positive training and causes no physical or emotional distress to the dog.
