The landslide tragedy in Wayanad, Kerala, is unprecedented and the loss of precious human life is shocking! We express deep condolences.
The high range and coastal areas of Kerala have become ecological danger zones. The Gadgil Report had warned about the probability of such disasters. But the Gadgil Report and the later Kasturi Rangan reports were ignored. The greens of Kerala have been crying in the wilderness about it for a long time. Such disasters are the outcome of climate change, and unbridled meddling and unsustainable development by vested interests degrading ecologically fragile areas.
The time has come for Malayalees to set aside their political and ideological differences to address the extreme ecological crisis facing Kerala. The Western Ghats seems to have become irreversibly degraded and complete ecological restoration seems almost impossible. Even worse disasters could happen in the future.
The way ahead is to create a master plan for tackling such disasters and minimise the loss of human life. The high range and coastal areas must be declared as ‘Special Ecological Zones’ with curbs on unsustainable development activities and special relief packages for the affected people. The authorities must consider impementing a monitoring mechanism in such disaster-prone regions and proactively shift people to safe relief camps at least during the monsoon months to ensure safety.
In this context, politicians, NGO activists, and policy makers of Kerala could gain valuable insights from this book ‘Flood and Fury: Ecological Devastation in the Western Ghats’ by journalist Viju B.
“The floods that devastated large parts of Kerala in 2018 were not an isolated, freak phenomenon; rather, they signalled something graver-the ecological devastation of the Western Ghats. India Greens Party celebrates 73rd Indian Republic Day
Unchir-Dunktok, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, 26 January 2022: On the occasion of 73rd Republic Day of India today, the India Greens Party called upon the citizens of the country to do their best to preserve and protect the unity, integrity, diversity, and sister-brotherhood of the country.
In a press release issued on the occasion by party’s Chief Spokesperson Suresh Nautiyal, he said the iGP leaders hoisted and unfurled the National Tricolour at several places in the country mainly at party’s national head office (NHO) at Unchir-Dunktok in Pauri Garhwal district of the Uttarakhand state, at Bahora village of Jashpur district in the Chhattisgarh state, and at Navalgadh village in Surendranagar district of the Gujarat state.
At the party’s NHO in Uttarakhand, the National Flag was unfurled by Office Secretary Deepak Dabral.
At Bahora village in Chhattisgarh, the flag was unfurled by Co-President Rajendra Minz.
At Navalgarh village in Gujarat, the Tricolour was hoisted by the National Vice-President Ranmal Singh Jhala.
On this occasion, party’s Co-Presidents Dr Apeksha Wasudeo Khobragade and Rajendra Minz said the country is passing through difficult times and every citizen of the country is expected to do the best to preserve and protect the unity, integrity, diversity, and sister-brotherhood of the country.
They said all difficulties can be overcome if the people are united to preserve and protect the unity and integrity of the country no matter how diverse their political ideologies and opinions are.
On this day in 1950, the country’s constitution, which was adopted on 26 November 1949, came into effect replacing the Government of India Act, 1935 with a democratic government system, completing the country’s transition towards becoming an independent republic.
This day, 26 January, was chosen as the date for Republic Day because it was on this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress.

But the point is what is Time; what value does it have; and why have we divided it into friction of second, seconds, minutes, hours, days, years, and so on; and what importance does it have; and to serve what purpose? The fact is that Time is spread all over – be it religion; astrology, spirituality; science including cosmology, astronomy and astrophysics, philosophy, etc. Time is among the most valuables in our respective lives, and is like energy which transforms into something else and the original form is changed every time. Does Time have to do something with the Theory of Relativity – both Special and General? Does Time have to do something with the Theory of Time and Space? How does it affect our respective lives and how does it control our lives? However, the most relevant question is – how to negate Time!”

കേന്ദ്രഭരണപ്രദേശമായ ലക്ഷദ്വീപിൽ പരിഷ്കരണങ്ങളുടെ പേരിൽ നടത്തുന്ന മനുഷ്യാവകാശങ്ങൾ, വ്യക്തി സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം, ഇഷ്ട ഭക്ഷണം തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാനുള്ള അവകാശം, ഉപജീവന ഇടങ്ങൾ, സാംസ്കാരികവും വംശീയവുമായ സ്വത്വം, പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളും വിശ്വാസങ്ങളും തുടങ്ങിയവയുടെ ലംഘനം അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഇന്ത്യ ഗ്രീൻസ് പാർട്ടി (iGP) പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി നരേന്ദ്ര മോദി ക്ക് നിവേദനം അയച്ചു.
പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി മോദിക്ക് iGP പ്രസിഡന്റ് സുരേഷ് നൗറ്റിയാൽ ഈമെയിലിൽ അയച്ച നിവേദനത്തിൽ ലക്ഷദ്വീപ് സമൂഹത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതത്തെയും ഉപജീവന മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങളെയും ബാധിക്കാൻ സാധ്യതയുള്ള വ്യാപകമായ വിനോദസഞ്ചാര പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള സംഭവങ്ങളിൽ പാർട്ടിയുടെ ആശങ്ക പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു.
പരിഷ്കാരങ്ങളുടെ പേരിൽ അടുത്തിടെ അവിടെ നടപ്പാക്കിയ ജനവിരുദ്ധ മാറ്റങ്ങളെ ശ്രീ നൗറ്റിയാൽ എതിർത്തു.
"പരിഷ്കാരങ്ങളുടെ പേരിൽ ഒരു തീരുമാനം എടുത്തപ്പോൾ ഭൂവിനിയോഗം, സമുദ്ര വിഭവ വിനിയോഗം, ഉപജീവന മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങൾ എന്നീ കാര്യങ്ങളിൽ ലക്ഷദ്വീപിലെ ജനസമൂഹം ദീർഘകാലം പരീക്ഷിച്ച് പ്രയോജനപ്രദമാണെന്ന് കണ്ട് സ്വീകരിച്ച രീതികളോട് ഒരു ബഹുമാനവും കാണിച്ചില്ല എന്ന് iGP മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു," ഹരിത രാഷ്ട്രീയ നേതാവ് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി.
"ജനങ്ങളുടെ ഭക്ഷ്യ സംസ്കാരം, പ്രത്യുല്പാദന സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം, സ്വാശ്രയത്വം തുടങ്ങിയ മേഖലകളിൽ ഇടപെടുക വഴി അവിടത്തെ വംശീയ വിഭാഗങ്ങളുടെ സംസ്കാരവും പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളും അവഗണിച്ച് അവരെ മുറിവേൽപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് പുറമേ അപമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. ജനാധിപത്യ വികേന്ദ്രീകരണത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പുരാതന രൂപങ്ങളിലൊന്ന് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഒരുമ ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന നിലവിലുള്ള പരമ്പരാഗത തീരുമാനമെടുക്കൽ രീതികളെ ഈ പുതിയ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ കീറിമുറിക്കാനിടയുണ്ട്," ശ്രീ നൗറ്റിയാൽ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു.
12 പവിഴ ദ്വീപുകളും 3 സേതുക്കളും മുങ്ങിയ 5 തീരങ്ങളും ഉൾപ്പെടെ 39 ദ്വീപുകളുടെയും ചെറുദ്വീപുകളുടെയും സമൂഹമാണ് ലക്ഷദ്വീപ്. കവരത്തി, അഗത്തി, മിനിക്കോയ്, അമിനി എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രധാന ദ്വീപുകൾ. 2011 സെൻസസ് പ്രകാരം ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ ആകെ ജനസംഖ്യ 64,429 ആണ്. ലക്ഷദ്വീപിലെ ജനങ്ങളിൽ ഭൂരിപക്ഷം തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ മലബാർ തീരത്ത് നിന്നും കുടിയേറിയവരുടെ പിൻതലമുറക്കാരാണ്. ദ്വീപ് നിവാസികൾക്ക് കേരളത്തിന്റെ തീരത്തെ മലയാളികളോടാണ് വംശീയമായി സാമ്യം. തദ്ദേശീയ ജനസംഖ്യയിൽ ഏകദേശം 93 ശതമാനത്തിലധികം മുസ്ലിങ്ങളാണ്. അവരിൽ ഭൂരിപക്ഷവും സുന്നി വിഭാഗത്തിലെ ഷാഫി സമ്പ്രദായം പിന്തുടരുന്നവരാണ്.
വൻതോതിൽ വിനോദസഞ്ചാരം നടപ്പാക്കിയാൽ അത് ജനവാസമുള്ള ദ്വീപുകളുടെ 36 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ വിസ്തീർണമുള്ള പ്രദേശത്തിനോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഉപ ഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിൽ നിന്ന് 200 മുതൽ 440 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ അറബിക്കടലിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ദ്വീപ സമൂഹത്തിനോ താങ്ങാൻ പറ്റുന്ന ശേഷിയുടെ അതിർവരമ്പുകളുടെ തന്നെ അങ്ങേയറ്റത്തിനും അപ്പുറമായിരിക്കും എന്ന് iGP നേതാവ് പറഞ്ഞു.
"അതുകൊണ്ട് മനുഷ്യാവകാശങ്ങൾ, വ്യക്തി സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം, ഇഷ്ട ഭക്ഷണം തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാനുള്ള അവകാശം, ഉപജീവന ഇടങ്ങൾ, സാംസ്കാരികവും വംശീയവുമായ സ്വത്വം, പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളും വിശ്വാസങ്ങളും തുടങ്ങിയവയെല്ലാം പുനസ്ഥാപിക്കണമെന്ന് താങ്കളോടെ അഭ്യർത്ഥിക്കുന്നു." iGP പ്രസിഡന്റ് അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു.
ലക്ഷദ്വീപിലെ ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഇച്ഛാ ശക്തിയും സമാധാനവും തകരാറിലാക്കാനും തകർക്കാനും അധികാരത്തിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വ്യക്തി നടത്തുന്ന ബോധപൂർവ്വവും ആസൂത്രിതവും ആയ നീക്കത്തിന് സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ വക്കിലാണ് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ജനങ്ങൾ എന്നതിനാൽ ഈ പ്രശ്നത്തിൽ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയുടെ ഇടപെടൽ നിർണായകമാണെന്ന് ശ്രീ നൗറ്റിയാൽ പറഞ്ഞു.
"കടലിന്റെയും കാലാവസ്ഥയുടെയും വ്യതിയാനങ്ങളെ ചെറുത്തു നിന്ന ഈ സവിശേഷ സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ വംശീയ സാമൂഹ്യ ഘടനയെക്കുറിച്ച് രാജ്യത്തെ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി അറിയാം," അദ്ദേഹം കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു.
"ദ്വീപുകളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്ന പവിഴപ്പുറ്റുകളുടെ സ്ഥിരത പരിപോഷിപ്പിക്കുകയും പരിപാലിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു പോരുന്നത് ഈ ദ്വീപുകളിൽ താമസിക്കുന്ന ഏകതാനമായ സമൂഹങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതവും സംസ്കാരവുമാണെന്ന് വിശ്വാസ യോഗ്യമായ ചരിത്ര സാംസ്കാരിക പാരിസ്ഥിതിക സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിയിട്ടുള്ള വിവിധ പഠനങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് iGP മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു," പാർട്ടി നേതാവ് പറഞ്ഞു.
ശുദ്ധജല ലഭ്യതയുടെയും ഭൂമിയുടെയും പരിമിതികളെ അതിജീവിക്കാനും നേരിടാനും പ്രാപ്തരാക്കുന്ന അനുയോജ്യമായ ഒരിടം കണ്ടെത്താൻ ഈ ദ്വീപുകളിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്ന മനുഷ്യർക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു.
"ജൈവ ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ അധിഷ്ഠിതവും മത്സ്യബന്ധനവുമായി കോർത്തിണക്കിയതുമായ സമ്പദ് വ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ നിന്ന് കെട്ടിപ്പടുത്ത സാമൂഹ്യ ഘടന അവിടെ നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന സഹകരണം, സഹിഷ്ണുത, പരസ്പരാശ്രയത്വം എന്നിവയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു," ഹരിത നേതാവ് പറഞ്ഞു.
"ഇതിന്റെയെല്ലാം അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ അവിടെ നടപ്പാക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന എല്ലാ പരിഷ്കാരങ്ങളും ഉടനടി നിർത്തലാക്കണമെന്നും അവയോരോന്നും അടിയന്തരമായി പുനരവലോകനം ചെയ്യണമെന്നും ഇന്ത്യ ഗ്രീൻസ് പാർട്ടി താങ്കളോട് അഭ്യർത്ഥിക്കുന്നു. ഭാരതീയ ഭരണഘടനയുടെ ആമുഖത്തിൽ വിഭാവനം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ ഈ ദ്വീപിലെ ജനസമൂഹത്തിന്റെ മനുഷ്യാവകാശങ്ങൾ, ജനാധിപത്യം, വംശീയ സ്വത്വം എന്നിവ കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിക്കണമെങ്കിൽ ഇത് തീർച്ചയായും ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യം തന്നെയാണ്," ശ്രീ നൗറ്റിയാൽ പറഞ്ഞു.
പൂർണ്ണമായും സുരക്ഷിതമായ ആരോഗ്യ പരിരക്ഷ, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, നീതിപൂർവകമായ ഭരണം, ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷ, അവരുൾപ്പെടുന്ന ജൈവ ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥയുമായി ബന്ധമുള്ള ഉപജീവനോപാധികൾ എന്നിവയുടെ ലഭ്യതയാണ് ഈ ദ്വീപുകൾക്ക് വേണ്ടത്.
അതുകൊണ്ട് ഓരോ പൗരനും ഉപജീവന മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങൾ, പോഷകാഹാരം, ഭൂവിനിയോഗം തുടങ്ങിയവയ്ക്കും ഒരു സമൂഹത്തെ ഒരുമിച്ചു നിർത്തുന്ന മറ്റെല്ലാ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകൾക്കും തുല്യ അവകാശങ്ങൾ നിലവിലുള്ള പവിഴ ദ്വീപുകളിൽ താങ്കൾ ഇടപെട്ട് കാര്യങ്ങൾ ശരിയാക്കുമെന പ്രതീക്ഷയാണ് ഇന്ത്യ ഗ്രീൻസ് പാർട്ടിക്കുള്ളത്," iGP നേതാവ് സൂചിപ്പിച്ചു. ഈ സമൂഹങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് നമുക്ക് വളരെയധികം കാര്യങ്ങൾ പഠിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ടെന്നും ആ അവസരം നഷ്ടപ്പെടുത്തി ഒരു ജീവിത രീതിയെ തന്നെ ബോധപൂർവ്വം ഉന്മൂലനം ചെയ്ത ഒരു തലമുറയുടെ ഭാഗമായി നാം ഓർമ്മിക്കപ്പെടാനിടയാവരുതെന്നും കൂടി അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.
വ്യക്തിസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം, ഇഷ്ട ഭക്ഷണം തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കൽ, ഉപജീവന ഇടങ്ങൾ, സാംസ്കാരികവും വംശീയവുമായ സ്വത്വം, പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളും വിശ്വാസങ്ങളും തുടങ്ങിയ മനുഷ്യാവകാശങ്ങളുടെ ഗുരുതരമായ ലംഘനം ലക്ഷദ്വീപിലെ ഭരണാധികാരി നടത്തുന്നതിനെപ്പറ്റി ചർച്ച ചെയ്യാൻ ഒരു ഇടം ഒരുക്കാൻ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ഇടപെടണമെന്നും ഇന്ത്യ ഗ്രീൻസ് പാർട്ടി അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു. അടിയന്തിര നടപടികൾ എടുത്തില്ലെങ്കിൽ ജനങ്ങളുടെ മുഖ്യ തൊഴിലുകളായ മത്സ്യ ബന്ധനം, തെങ്ങു കൃഷി, കയർ പിരിക്കൽ എന്നിവയെ ബാധിക്കുമെന്നും പാർട്ടി പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു.
ഇപ്പോൾ കൊണ്ടു വന്നിരിക്കുന്ന മാറ്റങ്ങൾ സമഗ്രമായ ഒരു പര്യാലോചന പ്രക്രിയക്ക് ശേഷം മാത്രമേ നടപ്പിൽ വരുത്താവൂ എന്ന് പാർട്ടി നിർദേശിച്ചു. അതോടൊപ്പം അവിടെ ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന പരിപാടികൾക്ക് മുകളിൽ നിന്നും അടിച്ചേൽപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ രീതിക്കു പകരം പ്രാദേശികവും ആവശ്യകത അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയുള്ളതുമായ കൂടിയാലോചനാ സമീപനം കണക്കിലെടുക്കുന്ന ഒരു ദീർഘകാല ദർശനം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കണം.
