100%!

(As someone who's raised 3 into adulthood and couldn't be closer to them), please don't buy into all those guilt-inducing "you'd better savor every moment" messages out there!

Whenever I see or hear about a child having their privileges taken away, forced isolation from peers, or losing the things they NEED to help their behavior be better (like recess or connection), a little piece of my heart sinks.

The rest is set on fire with a passion for advocating for this ONE thing: punishment and consequences do NOT help children learn. They can be deterrents, but NOT in the ways we think!

Punishment and consequences deter kids from:

➡ Coming to us for help (because it's not safe).
➡ Trusting our advice (because they view us as adversarial/self-serving).
➡ Learning new behaviors (because they activate the stress response - but do not engage the higher thinking part of the brain).

It's a cycle that makes behavior spiral and our relationships worse.

As a family, feelings should be spoken about openly and how they impact you. You can say, "I'm really tired at the moment so I'm finding it harder to be calm". Talk about how your body feels and what you can do to help you remain calm. Ask your child what they would do. When your child is getting frustrated link their body with the emotion, such as "your muscles look really tight, are your feeling frustrated"? You can talk about what you do when you are frustrated and practice together, breathing exercises are a great way to do this (look at previous blogs on fun relaxations).

The Story

Jay's stork delivers her to the wrong door. She is taken care of by a nice lady, but the time comes for her to go on the journey to find her true mom and dad.
The Family Mountain is renowned for being the place for families to come together, so that is where she heads to.
Although it's a scary road, she courageously pulls through so that she gets to meet her parents.
And since all is well that ends well, her parents are waiting for her there and they begin their beautiful lives together.

Children are brought to a family in many ways. Adoption is one of the ways. And there are many variants of that, too. In every case, there is a journey involved.

This is what I had in mind when writing the children's book "Jay climbs the Family Mountain".

I hope to have, by the end of the month, a release date settled. Will keep posting updates as the details are decided.
