Week 52

Worry

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philippians 4:6

Everybody has worries which is normal. But some of us worry so much that it affects our physical and spiritual health. My mother has a lot of worries; she can’t eat or sleep well. Having to raise four children in harsh circumstances in Burma as a widow, her life was full of hardship, sorrow, and tears. It is painful to see her struggle. Even now, she is having to hide in the jungle to get out of the way of the brutal Burmese military. This inevitably adds worries on top of worries. For once, I just want to see my mother feel peaceful. I worry a lot too, sometimes seemingly over nothing. While worry is a part of life, when we let worries overtake us, God may have lost His place in our life. Sometimes, I tell my mother, “Mom, God's not dead yet." By worrying, we cannot add a single hour to our life. Let’s remind one another that the God we worship is bigger than our problems and worries. In place of worries and complaints, let’s cultivate the habit of praying, praising, counting our blessings, and trusting in God’s provision.

God, we put our worries on You. Please lighten our burdens and teach us to trust you more.

Week 51

Willingness

For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.

2 Corinthians 8:12

A willing heart wants to see things work. It responds to problematic situations with efforts to make things better. A willful heart is the opposite. It insists on things going its way before taking actions. Willingness is a readiness to be obedient. Willfulness is a position of entitlement and no compromise. In Karen soccer tournaments, willingness plays soccer in the field and willfulness watches the soccer game and criticizes players for not kicking the ball right. In our churches, a willing heart asks, “What are the needs? How can I help?” A willful heart demands, “What do I get out of the church?” or says, “I want a church with things I like - nice building, fun activities, good music, pastors I can summon anytime.” Usually, the willing ones have a heart larger than their bank account or education. The Lord accepts a willing heart and multiplies its fruit. Are you willing or are you willful? Does your heart want to build up the kingdom of God or elevate yourself?

Gracious God, please give me Your heart. Thank you for accepting and honoring our gifts when we give with willingness.

Week 50

Vanity

Pride goes before destruction,

a haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 16:18

After my grandfather died, we inherited his tools and machine parts he used for drilling tube wells. I decided to sell those as we had no need for them. Someone looked at the items and bargained. At that time, I had some money. I snapped at him, “If you want to buy it, buy it. If you don’t want to buy it, don’t buy it. I don’t care.” He answered pleasantly, “I can’t afford those right now so I will just leave.” My vanity was a serious handicap to me in minding my manners and showing respect to others. Later, I found out that that man is a chief engineer in a high position. After one year, the tools and machine parts became rusty. I remembered this man and called him. He again talked to me nicely and told me he would come over. This time I was respectful after learning my lesson. The sale went through. The devices did not become useless. My house also got cleaner and more spacious. Whenever I think of that occasion, I feel ashamed of my vanity. My heart was haughty with the little money I had. My vanity led me to fall, but God was there to catch me and allow me to learn from my mistake.

Dear God, please give me a heart like Yours. May the fruit of the Spirit come alive in me!

Values are beliefs that define what is important to us, what we will do, and what we won’t do. Reading the Book of Ruth, one can gather that her top five values are love, loyalty, commitment, responsibility and humility. What about you? What are your heart’s deepest desires for how you want to conduct your life? Try picking your top five values from the following list.

Based on your selections, would you say your lifestyle is consistent with your values? God can help you live by your values. Ask God for help.

Week 48

Uplifting

A happy heart makes the face cheerful,

but heartache crushes the spirit.

Proverbs 15:13

In our Burmese and Karen culture, I rarely hear people describe feeling “uplifted.” There is a mysterious power that an uplifted mood has over physical health. When one has a “crushed spirit” it hurts the body as well. Practically, it means that what is going on spiritually or emotionally affects the body, and what is going on physically in the body affects the spirit. What others see about us on the outside is ultimately based on what we are feeling on the inside. In other words, your face shows your heart. If you are happy inside, it will show outside. If you are sad inside, it will also show outside. Others know your heart by what they can see on your face. When our heart is filled with gladness, it creates an uplifting atmosphere for those around us. This gladness does not come from mere human prosperity - but truly comes from the blessings of the Lord and is maintained by the Lord Himself. There is only one real heart doctor in the universe. Do you know Him? It’s Jesus. Jesus, the heart doctor has the power to easily uplift us with love, joy, peace, hope, and all sorts of other wonderful traits to enlarge our heart and energize our countenance.

Our heart doctor, Jesus, please give us an uplifted heart to be the light of the world.

Week 47

Unhappiness

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

There are times when we feel down and unhappy. Even Jesus Christ was not always happy on earth. There were times when he shed tears. When we swallow our anxiety and sadness and keep it inside us, it can become physical and mental health issues for us. I have a group chat on my phone with my four close friends. We understand one another without judgment. We do not minimize or compare our problems. Our group chat is a little space of freedom where we can say whatever we want and pour out what is on our mind. After sharing my unhappiness and burden, I usually feel lighter. This is also one way to follow Jesus’ example, who invites us to cast our anxiety on Him because He cares for us. Let us be friends who offer one another love, understanding, and a shoulder to help bear the burdens. The word of God in Proverbs 17:17 (CEV) says, “A friend is there to help, in any situation, and relatives are born to share our troubles.” The same Bible verse in the New Living Translation says, “A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.” No doubt all of us need such friends!

Dear God, thank you for inviting us to cast our anxiety, our unhappiness on You just so You can lighten our hearts. Please help us to be friends who share in bearing the burdens of each other.

Week 46

Trust

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

Psalm 56:3

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:20

For a relationship to be healthy, trust is essential. The evidence of being disciples of Jesus Christ is loving one another. Trust is the building blocks of love. How then can we strengthen trust in our relationships? Imagine a place where you can be honest with your doubts and fears without being silenced or judged! Imagine a place where you can open your hearts without being fixed or shamed. Imagine a place where you can confess your messes knowing you will still be forgiven and accepted. That place is where trust is being built. Imagine that place being your church! When the Psalmist is afraid, he puts his trust in God. When we are afraid, can we come to our brothers and sisters in Christ for encouragement and support? When we can’t quite figure out how to get back on the right track, can we get patience and grace from our Christian friends? We can trust Jesus because we are never without His presence in our lives. Jesus is with us when we do the right thing. Jesus is with us when we do the wrong thing. How are we, brothers and sisters in Christ, showing up in each other’s life?

Jesus, thank you for we are never alone and You are trustworthy. We pray in Your Name. Amen.

Week 45

Trouble

This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
He saved him out of all his troubles.
Psalm 34:6
When my daughter got an opportunity to go to school in America, I was determined to send her there. But, when I looked at the expenses, my head was about to explode. There was no way I could afford the expenses. I knelt down and prayed to God to make a way when there seemed to be no way. The money that I had was gone by the time she was in her second year of college. But, my sister in America helped her and she got by step by step. Unexpectedly, I got a job from an American couple who have a willing heart for the people of Burma. I worked online and made some money that I never expected I would make. This was a great help in need and it lightened my heavy yoke. Moreover, I was able to borrow money from this American couple and they even contributed to my daughter’s school expenses. Yet, we still fell short from time to time to pay for tuition, healthcare, and other expenses. Each time, I knelt down before God and presented my troubles to Him. Today, my daughter completed her degree in America. God heard me and saved me from all my troubles.

Dear God, please let those who are in trouble know to come to You and call on Your Name for deliverance. We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Week 44

Shame

Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.
Romans 10:11
My friend said she experienced long-lasting, excruciating shame after her boyfriend abandoned her and their newborn baby. She explained, “I feel subhuman and worthless. It took me 20 years to recover and feel I belong to the church. Healing comes from the word of God that reveals God’s unconditional love for me and the true connection I share with other Christians, who do not judge me.” Sadly, shame messages are openly or subtly communicated in churches. Using shame as a means to change someone’s behavior distorts God’s character as fault-finding, rejecting, and punishing. In a shame culture, you know you are good or bad based on what the community says about you, not what the word of God says. Shame is fear-based. Shame keeps us from being honest with each other. Shame obstructs the conviction and transformation of the Holy Spirit. Sin has left a crimson "Shame" stain, but Jesus paid it all and washed it all. Jesus treated Zacchaeus the tax collector or the woman caught in adultery with love, acceptance, and grace. It is love and grace that truly transforms lives. It definitely is not shame.

God, please break the power of shame from the enemy in Your churches in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
