•Microsoft has revealed a new anti-malware service by the name of Project Freta.
• The company describes it as a “free service from Microsoft Research for detecting evidence of OS and sensor sabotage, such as rootkits and advanced malware, in memory snapshots of live Linux systems”.
• Malware detection strategies rely on “sensors,” i.e., certain activities happening on a system based on a limited dataset, predicting the presence of a malware strand.
• Instead of focusing on lowest-resourced attackers that can be easily spotted by existing sensors, Project Freta aims to stop highly resourced attackers by automatically fingerprinting and analyzing snapshots of thousands of Linux cloud VMs.
