By several weeks into combined chemotherapy and radiation, you are likely to be experiencing a level of fatigue and side effects that simply may not allow you to walk for 30 minutes per day. You will have bad days, but whatever you do, try. Try to walk daily, if you can. No one benefits from sitting on the couch all day. Exercise is the fourth treatment for cancer—do what you can. movingthroughcancer.com/landing-page

The time before you start treatment is a window of opportunity. It’s a chance to get in the shape of your life for the fight of your life. And during a time when you may feel out of control, exercise is a way to retake some control. movingthroughcancer.com/landing-page

A cancer diagnosis is life changing; it’s what physicians and behavioral psychologists call a “teachable moment.” But a better way to think about it is that it’s a motivational moment. When you’re faced with a cancer diagnosis, it becomes crystal clear what matters to you in life. And that can become your motivation. movingthroughcancer.com/landing-page

Given the level of fatigue many patients describe as the most exhausted feeling imaginable, the sense that you cannot even lift your head from the pillow—how can anyone be expected to move, let alone exercise?

While moving more seems counterproductive at first glance, exercise is the number one recommended treatment for cancer fatigue in the most widely used treatment guidelines for cancer, which are published by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and used daily by oncologists in their clinics. This recommendation is based on the results of more than 200 studies looking at the effects of exercise on cancer fatigue. movingthroughcancer.com/landing-page

The reason that so many caregivers and medical professionals have not embraced exercise during cancer treatment is because it’s counterintuitive. It seems logical that exercise is tiring and that cancer would demand rest for your body to battle the disease. But here is the interesting thing that decades of research into exercise have taught us: The human body has evolved so that expending energy actually increases your energy. Your body is meant to be used—that is what makes it stronger. Being sedentary actually weakens your body. This holds true for cancer patients as well. Test it for yourself. Do you feel better sitting on the couch all day? Or getting out for a walk? movingthroughcancer.com/landing-page

In one analysis that looked at the results of sixty-one clinical trials of women with breast cancer, those who exercised during treatment had better quality of life, fitness, energy, and strength, as well as significantly less anxiety and depression. A different analysis, this one including the experiences of more than 1,000 patients with a variety of advanced cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and lung, breast, gastrointestinal, and prostate cancers, found the exact same thing: Those who did regular exercise during cancer treatment had much better physical function, energy, psychological well-being, and overall quality of life. movingthroughcancer.com/landing-page
