I KNEW HIM FROM SLEEPLESS NIGHTS
He lived as a determined and sincere person. He was a pillar of the community and he wanted every child to go to school and bring positive change to the community. He contributed to the education of many; taking personal responsibility to establish primary and secondary schools in his region and counsel children to take education seriously and avoid distractions. He liked to award all students who performed well in class.
He was a keen farmer and one of the few people in the country who promoted coffee cultivation alongside food crop farming to boost livelihoods and improve the wellbeing of the community. While tending to his coffee plantations he also supported the marginalized in the community, training them how to improve their own coffee production. He provided jobs to many and adopted some homeless children who relied on wages from coffee farming.
He owned several commercial buildings in different parts of the region to support his family and the community and a large home which people often thought was a church, where he happily and regularly hosted people visiting from afar.
That man was Rwaraje Xavier, my father.
On the first of October 1990, the RPF-Inkotanyi, a politico-militia, invaded Rwandan territory from the neighboring country Uganda. On reaching our region, they would came to our home daily to harass my father, asking questions regarding his possessions and the community in the region. They threatened to kill him and his entire extended family if he defied their orders. They would often put sword to his neck to get him to talk. He slowly went insane and he agreed to give up a lot of his possessions.
In 1997, the situation became even dire. The RPF-Inkotanyi had orders to kill everyone in the region. They killed children, pregnant women, adults, old-age pensioners, handicapped and disabled people and even the mentally ill. Everyone. After killing innocent people, they would loot their properties. Many of our extended family members were killed in this massacre. They burnt all of my father’s buildings and our home and took his entire herd of animals. To survive he dug holes where he would hide all day long and sleep. Some of our other family members who were hiding away in dug holes were found and killed.
In 2003 when he thought that there was finally peace, they continued to torture him. By then he lived in a tiny shed, having lost all his belongings. Despite the hardships and living in deprivation, he continued to bat for his dignity but what remained didn’t last for long. The RPF-Inkotanyi, now in power, retained possession of his coffee and banana farms. However, they did not cultivate the lands, instead cutting everything down. Poverty continued to rise.
Even though, he had tried his best in 1994 to protect and rescue innocent people from being killed, that didn’t prevent the RPF-Inkotanyi from bringing him to what was called “Inkiko gacaca”, a public inquiry. They tried to conceive crimes against him but this failed as he would remind those who were instructed to accuse him of how he had helped, rescued or hidden them; and they would instantly cry in front of the crowd. The judges would immediately exonerate him from these alleged crimes, something that was extremely unusual in the “Inkiko gacaca”.
I knew him from sleepless nights. All my life he was unable to fall asleep. For him, every night was his last night. He would spend the nights in the kitchen unable to sleep and igniting the base of coffee trees.
When many people thought that the killing by the RPF-Inkotanyi was finally over, his nightmares continued to worsen. He was haunted by what he had seen. He agonized and was always neurotic and tempestuous. During the day, I was always with him. I asked him many questions and he answered. Even if he seemed traumatized, he was happy when answering my questions and talking with me about the authoritarian leadership and dictatorship in power.
On August 15, 2009 when I was in my second year of O-Level secondary school, I was informed that the trauma, wounds and pain of torture from the RPF-Inkotanyi had emanated his death and that he was no longer in human form on this earth.
I love you dad, you taught me to forfeit and sacrifice myself for the benefit of others and to fight for my dignity. Continue resting in eternal peace, rest in the Light and with love and fond memories.
