Using the word and instead of but is helpful because using the word but seems to negate the first part of the sentence whereas using the word and allows both points to be true.

Developing this new parenting skill takes time, so it's essential to be patient with yourself as you hone your ability to be both kind and firm. Over time, you'll observe that practicing this approach contributes to more effective parenting and fosters a healthier relationship with your child."
