Tradition holds that soldiers with 1st Battalion 69th Infantry Regiment, New York Army National Guard lead the annual New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade – the unit has done so since 1851. This year is no different. Soldiers marched in New York, but celebrations were also held in Djibouti, where much of the unit is currently deployed as part of Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.
Formed in 1849, the unit was made up almost entirely of Irish American members. Many of the unit’s traditions draw on that Irish heritage, though today’s unit members come from the range of diverse backgrounds that make up New York City.
