When it comes to product and album sales, one of the most overlooked strategies I see wedding photographers do is not selling to future clients.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know it might seem weird to try and sell items to a couple who’s wedding hasn’t happened yet, or maybe is a year away - but let me tell you this little secret:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even if their wedding hasn’t happened, it doesn’t mean you can’t upsell to them this season! In my upcoming workshop, The ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Holiday Sales Money Map, I’ll show you two ways to get more upgrades in their packages - and upsell them this season.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I want you to really increase your revenue this Holiday season! Last week’s presentation of the workshop went SO WELL! So many students are already getting sales, just from implementing my super easy step by step system.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So what are you waiting for? Get your ticket for the Holiday Sales Money Map, happening on 10/28 at 12:30PM CST!

I know the holiday season can be overwhelming - and stressful! But today I want to share some tips for how to handle important holiday due dates - so you can get on top of orders!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
First, communicate your album ordering deadlines to your client's way in advance. In my contract, I state that weddings photographed after x date will receive their images after January 1st. I also include that albums must be finalized and paid in full by x date to receive before December 23rd.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This way, clients are aware of the due dates prior to their wedding. Let them know about album due dates NOW! If they want an album by Christmas, give them the exact due dates this week, so they order ASAP.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also email clients early in the season, reminding them about album and print order deadlines, as well as holiday closure dates. Reminders are important - people forget!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also make sure to put the holiday deadlines and office closures in my email signature starting Mid-November. It’s just another subtle reminder to clients, as we go into the holiday season.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These simple tips can help you overcome the last-minute season stress!

Do you have a welcome questionnaire when your client books your services?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I suggest having not just a welcome packet, but a questionnaire for them to fill out. This is a great way to gather all of their information, in one place!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some items you can have:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Phone, email, and mailing address⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Preferred method of contact (this is a great way to see if they prefer email or phone calls!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Birthdates (so you can send them something nice!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also recommend having some fun questions, so you can get to know them!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-What do you want to feel when you look at your photos⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-How did the two of you meet?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-What are you most excited about your upcoming wedding?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your goal is to get to know your new couple as best as possible beforehand! That way can do the best job making them feel comfortable and relaxed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🖤 The current events are very challenging and my team and I want let our minority community members know we stand with you in solidarity, love and support.

We have been been reflecting, learning, and working on plans of action. We would like to share the start of this and welcome feedback.

Though this education platform is small and in its infancy here are our goals. Many of these were the suggestion of and - THANK YOU.

First, We will LISTEN.

Then,

We will continue our education about racism both personally and in our business. We will incorporate bias training to both our on-boarding and conturing education programs.

We will seek out minority owned businesses when hire services and purchase products in the future for our needs.

We will find ways to elevate minority voices within our industry.

We recognize this current feed is completely lacking diversity in its imagery. We are VERY sorry and working to fix this NOW while trying to avoid tokenism.

We will welcome feedback.

We will research, write and post an anti discrimination company policy, post it publicly and defend it on our new website which should be online this fall. Such policies will be made for all social media platforms as well.

This is just a tiny start.

How are you planning on making changes in your business to support inclusivity and diversity? What anti-racism policies would you like to see business make?

**Exciting News**
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today I am launching my 3-month personal business coaching program. For the next week, the program will be open to a very small and limited number of photographers. To kick things off there will be a one-time-only launch discount this week only.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Over the last several years I have helped many professionals and students with the business side of professional photography. I have helped season pros create marketing plans to bounce back from low bookings, "files-only" photogs transition to successful full-service studios, and beginner students set up their brand new ventures with solid foundations. Now I want to help YOU get to that next level.

I have designed this program to ensure that we actually implement the strategies I will help you put forth. We will meet for a 2-hour deep-dive session to identify goals, plan a direction, identify pain points, and create strategies to move your business forward in the following 90 days.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After your session, I will create a plan for the next three months for you to implement. Then we will meet every two weeks to keep you accountable, answer questions and help you continue to move forward!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Go to the link in my bio or drop me a DM and I will send you a link for us to jump on a quick 30 min call so we can chat about your goals and see if we can be a great fit together.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can't wait to start working with you!

Yesterday I started doing something a little different to prep for this weekend's wedding, and I wanted to share with you what I am up to. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am going to talk more about it in "detail" later. But basically, I am ramping up my typical shot list. I have always included a small "details of note" section reserved for super unique and sentimental things that were important to the client. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, this week, I collaborated with the planner to develop a comprehensive detail checklist for my second shooter (who is fantastic, experienced, and capable). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But, this wedding, like many weddings I shoot, has A LOT going on. And its spread out. And, there are like back areas that might get missed. So we are making a giant checklist. Its 2 PAGES LONG! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I will report back how it goes, my reason for trying this out, my ideas for how to streamline the process (because it was VERY time consuming). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you bring a checklist? There is a balance between being prepared and organized with being too consumed with the list, and it stifling your creativity and having free space in your brain to make awesome images.

My calendar is my LIFE. Its currently working overdrive in beast mode so I am working on testing out a new calendar app. I love a written analog planner, however, I tend to misplace things. So, the thought of not having a backup kills me and therefore I have embraced the computer calendar and trying to make it work for me. I am testing out a new app - Fantastical - upon recommendation and will report back. I love to block schedule in my tasks and days. Its the only way to stay focused. I still keep my to-do list in written form. I like re-writting it daily and physically crossing it off. But when I am at preak production is when I transfer that to-do list on my calander and schedule it out over the week. So much more gets done that way. Are you an analog calander or digital calander kinda person?

You probably have worked hard on developing your pricing packages and presenting them in a gorgeous design investment guide. But are you in a spot where you might need to adjust? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have almost always had two different price points. Just like airlines and hotels - we have a busy season with high demand dates. Venues practically always have a high season and an off-season rate too. So why not photographers?! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you ever regretted booking your lowest package on a weekend that in super high demand? Don't do it! You KNOW certain weekends of the year are going to be popular, don't let them go for that starter 5-hour package. On those high demand dates, drop that lowest starter package and maybe even raise the rates a tiny bit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In contrast, if you need to fill up some off-season dates, offer incentives. I don't recommend sending out a lower rate because clients won't realize the value they are getting if they can't compare. Instead, add that smaller package offering back in. Or, include a value-added item such as a portrait session or extra hour of coverage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every investment guide or pricing sheet should have a little note at the bottom explaining the price stated is only suitable for a specific time period (I think mine says 10 days).

I am thinking of making a series call Money Monday...what do you think? So here is the first - ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let's face it... a big challenge in the wedding business is that there is a wedding season. It can be feast or famine depending on how compact your season is. So here is a tip to help manage your cash flow a bit better and make these mountains and valleys seem more like gentle rolling hills. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Simple answer - break your payments up more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most photographers require online two payments - a retainer (either a set amount or 50% of the package) and a final payment before the shoot day. But what if you could just add even just one more payment in between to break this up a bit more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I recommend for weddings more than 9 months out, you take 3 or 4 payments. I personally love 4 payments. But I realize sometimes that is a lot of check writing for a client so I always give them the option. This way you get a few checks in the off-season months. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In addition - It's actually better for both you and your client. Why - it reduces the risk to both of you in case of a cancelation. Have you ever had a client cancel their wedding right before that second payment was due...hurts right? Well, it won't be so bad if you are only collecting the last 25%. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I personally do 4 payments. 25% retainer, 25% due six months out, 25% due 3 months out and last payment is due 30 days out. Each payment is considered non-refundable.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Do you know your hourly rate?

No...not the hourly rate to your client...your REAL hourly rate. The amount of money made divided by the real amount of hours worked. Those hours late at night, those hours on weekends, the hours you spent working on your business. THAT rate.

That number is HUGELY powerful to know for two reasons.

First, it can help you determine what to charge for a product or service. The easiest example is an hour shooting included the hours prepping plus the hours editing etc. Or albums are not just the price of the book itself but all the design time, time making changes and time prepping the order and managing it.

But perhaps the most important reason to know your hourly rate is that it can help you make important business decisions. And that is helping you decide what tasks are worth your time. Its not the only factor, but its a super important one.

For example, let's just say conservatively you want to make $60k a year. And let's say you are giving yourself 2 weeks vacation and working 40 hours a week. That is $30 an hour. Then, if you can outsource a task for much less than that, you might want to think about it. Or if you can hire an assistant for $15/hr.

The other day I needed some simple graphic design work to be done. It would probably take me an hour to figure out and do myself. But I could go onto a site like Fiverr and get it done for $5 then it totally worth it. The big one for me is outsourcing the bulk of the editing for wedding photos. It's a task that takes me personally waaay too long and I am not the best at large batch editing. I am better at putting final touches on a photo. So that is where I choose to spend my time.

Also, I realized it is NOT worth my time to fold laundry for 4 hours every week ;) So I have a helper that does this for me.

Food for thought - If you want to make a $100k a year than your hourly rate is $50 per hour. Now go make decisions and run your business like a BOSS!

This morning I was on a phone interview with a new potential client that I am excited to work with next year. Phone interviews can be really challenging because you don't have the chance to work off of someone's visual cues. However, one tip that really helped me when I first got started...Smile! Yes, actually grin from ear to ear when you start talking. This will help relax your subconscious. Try it! I swear it works and there is some science to back it up!

And for you, super introverts out there - think of a happy golden retriever puppy. Yep, just keep that visual and then smile. This also puts you in the right frame of mind about being excited and helps with the nerves.

I also like to walk around while on a phone interview instead of staying static at my desk.

And finally, I think another thing that really sets photographers apart is having confidence and also taking control over the conversation. Yes listen to your client but also, they usually don't know what the heck to ask! So take over! Talk about your style, your shooting philosophy, why you love photographing weddings, what you do the best and then also go over your pricing packages. It shows you have experience and confidence on the wedding day.

Where do you struggle with phone interviews? And what has helped you overcome them? I would love to hear!
