There are many barriers that low-income individuals may face when trying to participate in physical activity, including transportation, baseline mental and physical health, access to healthcare and medication, location, and education.

It is clear that equitable access to physical activity is a complex issue that involves economics, policy, infrastructure, society, and culture.

However, as equitable access to physical activity becomes more important to policy makers and healthcare professionals, it is vital that we highlight some of the ways we can overcome barriers low income individuals face.

When we see these participation numbers, it is important to identify, understand and remedy barriers to Canadians being physically active and playing sport.

Research continues to suggest that Indigenous youth experience higher levels of obesity and obesity-related chronic disease such as diabetes, metabolic disease, heart disease and more. These conditions are primarily prevented through lifestyle modifications such ad physical activity and nutrition.

However, specific constraints limit participation in physical activities and sport for urban Indigenous youth.

With increased pressure from the Indigenous communities and allies in Canada, supports have been implemented to increase access and awareness for sport for indigenous youth that can ingrate their traditional and cultural beliefs to crate a safer and more inclusive space.

Healthcare professionals and exercise specialists can benefit from learning more about these tools to ensure that their communities are able to partake in healthy lifestyle choices such as physical activity.

Canadians with Disabilities are less likely to meet the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines. But are the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines inclusive for all Canadians?

For this post, we interviewed Hisham M and Tom M to talk about their experiences with physical activity and to gain insight to solutions to physical activity barriers.

There isn’t one solution available to solve these barriers as everyone’s experiences are complex and unique. To address these barriers, discussions and collaboration amongst individuals living with disabilities, policy makers, government officials, and community health and fitness providers may create accessible solutions.

Important Message: The Mental Health Crisis is Real.

Access to mental health resources are a major barrier to tackling this crisis. In any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. 🏥

Thankfully, physical activity can be both preventative and therapeutic for mental health disorders. While relying solely and physical activity to tackle this crisis is futile, it is important that us at Enayble Health shed light on both the positive and negative connections between exercise and mental health.🏃

Stay tuned to learn more about this connection in our newest series🔥
