According to new research from RBC, recent graduates are getting harder hit by unemployment than at any point in the past 40 years. In 2023, recent post-secondary graduates represented 16% of those who were unemployed. In 2008, this was just 3.6%; in 1990 this was 1.4% and in 1981 unemployment for recent graduates was just 0.7%. In the year 2000, post-secondary graduates didn't even register as unemployed and most of the unemployed were those who were laid-off and those who quit. It's Day 5 of 'Job Development Week' (our last day) and we're noting the unemployment rate for nearly every marginalized population is more than twice as high as the unemployment rate for middle-age men. The employment challenges get even harder when you consider people who fall in two or more categories such as Indigenous women or immigrants with disabilities. There are also other factors where there is a higher unemployment rate such as single parents where the rate is 7.6%.
In job development, we can develop tailored talking points on the benefits of hiring workers from any one of these groups. In our 'Developing a Comprehensive Approach to Job Development' workshop taking place on either Jan. 24th or 25th. This will be a foundational online training session, providing career professionals with tools, resources and strategies on how to excel in employer engagement and placement. Register by TODAY Dec. 22nd for a 25% discount. Click here to purchase your ticket: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/labourmarketonline/1091439

It's Day 4 of 'Job Development Week' and we're examining the 706,100 jobs going unfilled in the labour market. The job market is transforming itself into a 'skills-shortage' not a 'labour shortage'. Proportionally, positions requiring a high school diploma or less (-31.3%; -189,400) saw the largest year-over-year declines in vacancies. Employers are more reluctant to hire people who are new to the job market or who lack specific training, but it doesn't need to be this way.
We'll be discussing what this conversation with employers might look like during: 'Developing a Comprehensive Approach to Job Development' on either Jan. 24th or 25th. This will be a foundational online training session, providing career professionals with tools, resources and strategies on how to excel in employer engagement and placement. Register by THIS FRIDAY Dec. 22nd for a 25% discount. Click here to purchase your ticket: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/labourmarketonline/1091439
