I assure Nigerians that security agencies are on the trail of the murderers of twelve miners shot in Unguwar Magro Village, Niger State, and they will be apprehended soon.
No mining will occur at the attack site until investigations are complete. Security agencies are committed to ensuring that mines across the country are safe from bandits seeking to exploit mineral-rich areas through violence.
The Mining Marshals are working with intelligence units to turn this attack into a special case, tracking the suspected bandits infiltrating Shiroro from neighboring states. Those who invade villages and kill innocents for illegal mining will face severe consequences.
Preliminary reports indicate that non-Nigerians are funding these operations. Anyone involved will be prosecuted for economic sabotage and waging war against Nigeria.
I also urge embassies to monitor their nationals in the mining sector, as criminal activities threaten international relations.
PLATEAU STATE GOVERNOR SEEKS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S INTERVENTION IN RECLAIMING MINING PONDS
Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has called for the Federal Government's intervention through the utilization of available ecological funds to reclaim mining ponds that have become life-threatening hazards across communities in the state.
Governor Mutfwang made this appeal during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, at his office in Abuja.
He briefed the Minister on Plateau State's significant contribution to the development of Nigeria's mineral sector but lamented that the state has been left to deal with the devastating environmental impacts of mining, which have turned into dangerous death traps for host communities.
"We are hopeful that by leveraging our partnership with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, we can secure Federal Government interventions through ecological funds to remediate these hazardous sites.
" Remedying these mining ponds is not only vital for public health but also holds the potential for significant economic benefits. Plateau State plays a crucial role in strengthening the national food basket and has the potential to turn agriculture into a foreign exchange earner. Hence, the reclamation of these sites is essential," the Governor stated.
Governor Mutfwang also advocated for enhanced collaboration between the Federal Government and subnational entities in training Nigerian youths in gem cutting and polishing, which would contribute to the nation's GDP. He urged the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to incorporate gem training into their curriculum to equip Nigerians with this valuable skill.
The Governor expressed appreciation to the Minister for the zeal and innovative approaches he has introduced in managing the mineral sector and reaffirmed Plateau State’s readiness to partner with the Federal Government to develop mutually beneficial business opportunities.
Responding, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, welcomed Governor Mutfwang and his delegation, acknowledging Plateau State's historical significance in Nigeria's mining development.
"We are keen to partner with Plateau State on developmental projects, particularly in elevating the profile of miners and mineral development in Nigeria. There is much to learn from the practical experiences of those who have been involved in mining for years.
" As we move forward with our mineral development policy formulation and ex*****on, Plateau State is pivotal. We are open to collaboration, cooperation, and joint efforts to transform our mineral sector for the benefit of all stakeholders, especially the host communities and subnational entities," the Minister said.
The Governor's entourage included the Managing Director of Plateau State Mineral Development Company, Mr. Matthews Dawap; Commissioner of Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development, Peter Gwom; and Chief Technical Adviser to the Governor, Manji Wilson, among others.

Artificial intelligence will be commonplace in mining operations, as miners use it to interpret data from smart sensors and machine interconnection, and to improve operational safety and efficiency through unmanned, AI-enabled technologies. This will transform mining into one of the safest occupations of its kind.
"Today, I addressed members of the press about the the forthcoming African Natural Resources & Energy Investment Summit (AFNIS) 2024.
The 3rd edition of the summit is scheduled to begin from July 16 and it provides a vital platform that unites government officials, private sector stakeholders, and industry experts from across the continent.
Our goal is to galvanize a consensus aimed at driving economic growth, achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and fostering the development of cleaner energy.
This year’s summit, under the theme 'Natural Resources for Economic Development,' underscores the significant role that Africa's natural resources play in driving economic prosperity. Our focus will be on empowering marginalized communities and strategically utilizing fossil fuel revenues to fund the transition to a greener Africa.
Organized in partnership with Core International Mining Company, the summit will bring together African Ministers of Solid Minerals/Mineral Resources and will be the first summit hosted by Nigeria since I emerged as the pioneer chairman of the African Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG).
AFNIS 2024 will set the pace for policy initiatives and regulatory frameworks that will enhance the sustainable exploitation of mineral resources and galvanize concerted action towards value addition.
I urged the media to provide extensive coverage of the event, highlighting the importance of projecting Nigeria as a favorable investment destination. It is essential that they contribute their quota to altering the negative perception of the country.
Let's utilize the AFNIS summit to bolster Nigeria's image and project us as Africa's leading investment destination." Dele Alake

" Today, I announced new rates for the mining sector aimed at enhancing ease of doing business and consolidating ongoing reforms.
This rate review aims to increase revenue to improve service delivery and boost mining's contribution to economic development.
Under the new rate, investors applying for a Mining Lease license will now pay N3 million, while Small Scale Mining Lease (SSML) applicants will be required to pay N300,000 for the first two cadastral units. The cost to obtain an Exploration Licence (EL) will be N600,000 for the first 100 cadastral units. A Quarry lease will now attract N300,000, and a reconnaissance permit will be set at N300,000.
These new regulations, developed in consultation with industry stakeholders, aim to discourage speculation and address the lack of funds that have been limiting the federal government's capacity to improve the ease of doing business in the sector.
Other services impacted by the new regulations include mineral title applications of the Mining Cadastral Office (MCO), as well as the transfer, enlargement, surrender, and consolidation of mineral titles.
I believe these new regulations will help maximize royalties from critical minerals such as lithium and gold, boosting the nation's revenue base and significantly contributing to economic development.
These rate revisions also impact services provided by the Mining Cadastral Office (MCO) and the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA).
Comprehensive details of the new rates regime can be found on the Ministry's website.

" I am pleased to announce the deployment of 350 additional operatives to the mining marshals, highlighting the federal government's dedication to reforming the mining sector.
During the Passing Out Parade for the new operatives at the NSCDC headquarters, I was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mary Ogbe and she commended the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their joint efforts in tackling illegal mining.
The accomplishments of the mining marshals in significantly reducing illegal mineral haulage and unauthorized activities of operators nationwide cannot be overemphasised.
Since the inauguration of the initial 2,220 mining marshals, we have made progress with over 200 arrests of illegal mining suspects, 133 prosecutions in progress, and confiscated minerals forfeited to the federal government.
The Passing Out Parade of the second batch of mining marshals will bolster our numbers, ensuring broader coverage and enhancing the squad's operational efficiency. By fostering collaboration between mining marshals and Federal Mines Officers (FMO) nationwide, we aim to enhance sector cleanliness, build investor trust, attract more investments, and stimulate development in the mining industry.
With the induction of the new operatives, the total number of specially trained and equipped mining marshals deployed across the country now stands at 2,570." - Dele Alake
" I am pleased to report that the National Gold Purchase programme, which aims to increase our country’s reserves and boost the value of the naira, is making significant progress.
Recently, I had the honor of presenting the latest gold bars to HE President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The bars were sourced from artisanal and small gold miners and refined by an agency of our Ministry, the Solid Minerals Development Fund. They have met the London Bullion Market Association Good Delivery Standard and will soon be sold to the Central Bank of Nigeria to strengthen our foreign reserves.
This marks the first commercial transaction under the National Gold Purchase Program (NGPP), which is a centralised offtake scheme supported by a decentralised aggregation and production network of artisanal and small-scale miners and cooperatives.
Furthermore, I am proud to announce that this first commercial transaction has resulted in a substantial increase of over US$5 million in Nigeria's foreign reserves assets, the refinement of over 70 kilograms of gold to the London Bullion Market Good Delivery Standard, and the successful aggregation of locally mined gold, injecting around NGN6 billion into the rural economy." - Dele Alake.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, says plans are ongoing by the Federal Government to establish six mineral centres in the six geo-political zones.
According to Alake. the aim is to boost the sector.
Alake said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
He said that the plan was part of the President Bola Tinubus administration’s commitment to diversify the country’s economy, by developing key sectors such as the solid minerals industry.
“Another one is the creation of six minerals centres in each of the six geo-political zones.
"We have our minerals all over the country and we cannot concentrate the mineral processing centres in one centre, and as we speak those plans are ongoing in the zones”, he said.
According to the Minister, the centres are also part of the government’s commitment to promote value addition to its minerals, aimed at facilitating multiplier effects on the economy.
NAN recalls that minister had announced that no licence would be granted to mining companies to operate without presenting a comprehensive plan for value addition such as processing and refining.
Alake said that investors in the past extracted raw mineral resources from Nigeria without adding value to them, which he described as a great loss to the country’s economy.
"Lthium is one of the finest qualities in the world, and it has other associated minerals like nickel, cobalt, and copper.
"So when an operator takes an ounce of our Lithium out of Nigeria, perhaps he declares Lithium.
But when he gets to his host country, he now has other associated minerals to his gain and to the loss of Nigeria.
“So our major policy which we enacted is that, henceforth, we would no longer approve application from an investor that does not show us a concrete plan for local value addition.
Which means processing here to add local value addition, and this will generate a multiplier effect like local employment, technology and skills transfer,” he said.
He said that the move was in line with plans to locally produce Electric Vehicle’s (EVs) batteries in Nigeria, which major ingredient is Lithium.
“Our objective here is to begin to produce EVs batteries which the ingredient is Lithium and other associated minerals, ” he said.
The Minister said that the local value addition policy had also been widely accepted by other African countries aimed at developing their local economies.
