Dresser 17/05/2020

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Dresser. Even though in some ways it feels like no time
has passed, that period of my life does feel like it exists in its own little bubble. When I listen to these songs I’m instantly brought back to those times. Weekly practices in John’s garage, crammed in between movie props and power tools. Adam stopping by my desk at work
throughout the day with ideas or show propositions. Joking around with Anna in the back of the van as we travelled hours and hours to perform for three people in a damp basement or VFW. I was very lucky to spend so much time around these extremely talented and awesome people, and I believe these experiences had a profound effect on who I am today.

Dresser came about in one of several transitional phases in Insouciant’s lifetime - which began long before I even met Adam at CCM. We moved away from the folky stuff of the Fall and Search Party albums. The sound slowly moved towards louder, more aggressive post-punk songs. You can hear it begin on Fall with “Force Field”, and from there each song featured more fuzz pedals, screaming, and weird mathy bits that took lots and lots of focus to get exactly right.

One of the reasons Dresser exists is because of this transition. That day in my parents’
basement we planned only to record a 3 song demo to show off the new sound. The songs we played at all our shows were quite different from the albums we had for sale and we wanted something simple to give to people who asked for the new stuff. Had I known this session would be the final album, I might have taken more time to get everything just right - but in some ways that raw, unpolished sound really encapsulates where we were at the time. After the drums were recorded for those 3 songs, we decided to just keep going. A few months later Dresser was complete.

These songs still have an incredible impact on me every time I hear them. They all remind me of this time in my life and the lyrics and music still ring true. 10 years have passed and I still hold on to things I should have let go of, I still struggle with feeling comfortable in my own skin. I daydream about the future I can imagine within ordinary objects like Adam and Anna sing of in Dresser. I am still waiting to be unafraid of my skeleton. I would love to be still and calm, especially in times like these. I try to be like John and welcome change even if with a dash of fear. All of these memories and emotions exist in some schrodinger's paradox - feels like nothing has changed, but nothing is the same.

I count myself lucky to have this record of memories, thoughts, and feelings, preserved forever like a photograph. I can see it all when I hear the passionate, pounding rhythms and the intense, erratic guitar riffs - powerful and raw, but clearly telling a specific story. Or how the bass weaves in and out of the songs in a way you wouldn’t expect but can’t imagine any other way, and my own little melodies on top, trying to connect and support the brilliance of everyone else. And all our voices singing out these introspective thoughts swirling within us. It all means the world to me, and I hope it has had a positive effect on all that have heard it.
