So thankful for this sweet woman! She made low carb meals Monday- Friday for our T1D along with cooking for the whole church camp! She volunteered to do this! He was able to enjoy his Church Jr. Camp while eating food that was easy on his blood sugars!💙🩸

When we travel I call ahead and ask about the breakfast- I almost always end up bringing food and we don’t regret it. It’s more prep but worth it it! 💙

A childhood favorite- low carb version!
My neighbor used to make the most wonderful cream puffs - I was more than happy to make a low carb version today!

Peanut butter chocolate mini waffles!
One egg, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, a sprinkle of salt and a splash of vanilla, handful of lilies chocolate chips cooked in my mini dash waffle iron-this made two mini waffles- topped with RXsugar organic chocolate syrup! Soooo good and easy!

Some “hacks” I’ve learned with the Dexcom G7 - -I “soak” the G7 ( put it on our T1D without pairing it so there is no “read” from it) about 22-23 hours before the start the new sensor.( So I insert it 12 hours before the 12 hour grace period begins.)
-When I start the new sensor, the old sensor still has an hour or two left. So I power up the receiver that we keep as a backup to his phone and it continues to read the old sensor while the phone is reading the new sensor!
-Now I can compare and see if I can “trust” the new sensor.
*I also eventually do a finger poke*- but if we have been trusting the old sensor- this is very helpful!
-Once the old sensor runs out completely, I then pair the receiver with the new sensor and remove the old sensor from his arm! 🙂

🙌🏼Also, so thankful this morning- truly believe God woke me up early this morning and brought to mind that I accidentally threw away the insertion device that has the very important paring code on it! ( When “soaking” early, you have to take a picture or save the insertion device with the pairing code to pair it later!) I was busy yesterday, and didn’t think a thing of it…this morning was trash day! My sweet hubby brought the two possible trash bags out of the containers he already set out for me. ( He was rushing off to work!) I was never happier to go through stinky wet trash🤢🤣! Found it! 🙂

“The Lord himself protects these children”💙. My sweet friend told me this as we were texting one night. Last night that was so clear to me. A reminder that He is with me guiding and leading me in care of His own.
Our T1D’s dexcom G7 was to expire at 12:30 pm. Not a great time for a sensor change. So I soaked the new one during the 12 hour grace period with the plan to stop the old one and start the new one a few hours early so I don’t have to stay up until midnight. So at 10:30 PM I followed through with my plan. The new sensor was wildly inaccurate with a extreme fake low and fake high. I confirmed with finger pokes.
But I realized before I stopped the sensor on the back up receiver( not his phone) - it was still reading the old sensor and it was correct and lining up with finger pokes 🙌🏼! So I had a read for about two hours that I could trust! I could see the read on the new sensor ( his phone- inaccurate ) and the read on his receiver ( older sensor- still accurate for 2 hours!)
I calibrated the phone/ new sensor and went to sleep with the phone ( new inaccurate read) and receiver beside me- planning to finger poke at 12:30 when the trusted receiver read on the old sensor expired. Well, I head the alarm at 12:30- planned to get up- and I fell back asleep. I’ve been very tired- with interrupted sleep for diabetes care the last few nights. 😴
I woke up with a start around 2:45 AM and knew I needed to check him! He was 54 according to finger poke- and his inaccurate new sensor/phone said 70! 54 is a dangerous range that could lead to seizures, coma, or worse!
I thank God for waking me! He was hungry- had a glucose tablet, a meat stick, and a low carb brownie ( the low carb just to help quell the hunger feeling).
God woke me up! So thankful! I told our T1D so too. Instead of feeling tired and cranky that I was up in the early AM I was so thankful. I remembered my Grandma who used to feed me “midnight” snacks when I would sleep over. I told our T1D about this sweet story of my Grandma and told him we get to ENJOY many midnight snacks together- because -yes- I had a brownie too!

Then there are nights like these… the red dots are low alerts…needing glucose each time. I’ll be backing off his long lasting basal shot 💉 this morning. This is the dance we do. 💙🩸

15/11/2023

World Diabetes Day! This kid continues to inspire me with his perseverance, acceptance, and bravery. There are so many kids just like him! 💙🩸💉He is also very goofy as you can see!😉

Thankful for a beautiful night of sleep for us all! No high or low alarms! He gave himself a shot of 💉0. 3 diluted Humalog fast acting insulin to correct the slight high you see at 9PM before bed. Then the rest of the night was smooth sailing. The night game of diabetes has been pretty difficult for us- so I’m thankful for last night! 😴

Yesterday marked 3 years since our son’s Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis. Yesterday he spend the day hanging out with his grandparents -hunting and being loved on by them. I am so thankful for the miracle of insulin- the miracle of everyday! Yes, sometimes I still have a moment where I’m shocked that this is our life- a moment 3 years ago changed everything. But I’m confident in a loving God and Heavenly Father who has sustained us through this journey and will continue to do so. There have been many blessings through the trial! God somehow gives beauty for ashes- a miracle! Today, I will be thankful, because we have Hope! 💙🩸

Happy Sunday! I *think* the cause of his high blood sugars have been the need for increased basal insulin. He takes 1 basal shot a day ( Some people take 2 by splitting the dose- we haven’t had success with that yet). This basal / long lasting insulin acts as a “background” insulin. If you’re blessed to have a fully functioning pancreas- your pancreas does this for you- it releases just the right amount of insulin to keep your body happy and healthy! Amazing!

As T1D kids grow their need for basal insulin increases- but there’s no magic formula- you just keep increasing basal if you see glucose numbers rise apart from food. ( Did you know T1D’s and their caretakers make medical decisions like this constantly without the input of a medical professional- the T1D’s and their caretakers BECOME the medical professionals- they really have to.)
We’ve been upping by a unit daily and he took 13 units this morning- the largest basal dose he’s had since diagnosis- and we may need to increase it more tomorrow.
💙🩸Cute pic of our boy with is his yummy lemon smart cake- absolutely no effect on his blood sugar! We bought it from: https://wholesomeprovisions.com
( We also buy our favorite low carb pasta from this awesome website!)

Another transparency post! Sharing for diabetes awareness- caregivers of T1d’s have a layer to their lives that takes up energy and time-some days more than others - like today.
Diabetes has been rough over here! Insulin and fluids! Lots of it! Low carb food and exercise- and the graph still looks like this .

He’s had 8 shots in the past 24 hours and will have more. 💉 These T1D kids are tough. 💪🏼

I’m uping his basal and contacting a pump representative - I’m ready for a pump to attack these days. I’m looking forward to being able to up his basal input immediately.

This could be a need for more basal as he grows, growth hormones, or he could be getting sick. Sometimes this is diabetes- and waiting for insulin to work can make a parent a bit cuckoo!😵‍💫

But I know this too will pass- we won’t give up- we will get his numbers into a safe territory as soon as possible! 🩸💙

02/11/2023

It’s difficult to share this graph but this is what diabetes looks like sometimes- even with a low carb diet! The dexcom glucose sensor was wonky and new and had to be calibrated several times even after a 12 hour soak yesterday. But he did have those highs and the lows are questionable… It was a rough night. But, “ his (God’s) mercies are new each morning ”💙🩸Here’s to another- hopefully better- on the glucose readings - day!

November is diabetes awareness month! 💙🩸This Luigi is our T1D! Every day we work to keep his blood sugars in range so that he stays safe and healthy. It’s not always easy, but he’s absolutely always worth every effort!

Low Carb chocolate doughnuts ( recipie in comments) & Low Carb Old Fashioned Baked Custard from Ultimate Guide to Keto Baking Cookbook. Yummy treats this weekend!
We also had a few challenges this weekend with his diabetes care. We learned the hard way about port insertions being faulty. We just couldn’t figure out the high numbers for quite a while- but our T1D pulled his I-port out and the little tube that delivers the insulin was bent! After a new port -insulin started working as we expected again. Pair that with a new glucose sensor that had to be started at 2:00 AM because the other one randomly kicked the bucket- so no “soak” time which meant inaccurate readings for quite a while. I also checked all the insulin expiration dates - switched out as necessary and mixed a new vile of diluted insulin before I realized the port was not working.
But we had yummy low carb food and a wonderful weekend despite all the challenges! ( And ALL of the mini doughnuts are gone!! 🍩 😂)

My heart is bursting- our 9 year old T1D pitched 9 strikes in a row- 3 batters out in a row. When your child is battling any health issue - it seems to make these victories even sweeter. Our worldview is forever changed and we are thankful for every moment with our children. I did tear up just a bit! 💙

Wendy’s - Cobb Salad! Skipped the fried onions- “This is called the too good salad! People can see how healthy a family we are because we all have salads!” 🥗 💙. No stress meal for the road! We also used the diet detector strips to ensure the diet soda was safe. 😉

Adrenaline definitely has an effect on blood sugars! Can you see when our T1D’s baseball game was tonight? And the spike- that was when he was pitching. ⚾️ I wasn’t able to give insulin during the game, so we just watched closely. I was just about to give a correctional dose of insulin when it came down WITHOUT insulin after he was relaxed and in bed.
