82 years ago, Naval Base Pearl Harbor was attacked suddenly and without warning by the Imperial Japanese Navy.
353 aircraft attacked the strategic base, and in fewer than 90 minutes, 2,403 American service members were killed, 1,178 were wounded, and 8 US Navy battleships, 3 cruisers, and over 180 aircraft were damaged or destroyed.
Despite being unprepared for the devastating attacks, Marines and Sailors responded rapidly, destroying enemy aircraft with anti-air weapons and launching aircraft to repel the enemy assault.
The United States quickly recovered from the attacks, in part because the American carrier fleet was not in Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack. Six months later, the U.S. won its first decisive victory in the Pacific at the Battle of Midway.
Newsweek 's Naveed Jamali recently flew aboard a USAF B-52 as part of the "Unconventional" military video series to discover why a 60+ y/o aircraft is still relevant today.
